Title: An FBI informant in the Trump campaign?

In her weekly Wall Street Journal column Kim Strassel delivers news and analysis you probably won’t see much of elsewhere. Following up on her own previous work that we noted here yesterday, Kim reports:
The Department of Justice lost its latest battle with Congress Thursday when it allowed House Intelligence Committee members to view classified documents about a top-secret intelligence source that was part of the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign. Even without official confirmation of that source’s name, the news so far holds some stunning implications.

Among them is that the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation outright hid critical information from a congressional investigation. In a Thursday press conference, Speaker Paul Ryan bluntly noted that Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes’s request for details on this secret source was “wholly appropriate,” “completely within the scope” of the committee’s long-running FBI investigation, and “something that probably should have been answered a while ago.” Translation: The department knew full well it should have turned this material over to congressional investigators last year, but instead deliberately concealed it.

House investigators nonetheless sniffed out a name, and Mr. Nunes in recent weeks issued a letter and a subpoena demanding more details. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s response was to double down—accusing the House of “extortion” and delivering a speech in which he claimed that “declining to open the FBI’s files to review” is a constitutional “duty.” Justice asked the White House to back its stonewall. And it even began spinning that daddy of all superspook arguments—that revealing any detail about this particular asset could result in “loss of human lives.”

This is desperation, and it strongly suggests that whatever is in these files is going to prove very uncomfortable to the FBI.

The bureau already has some explaining to do. Thanks to the Washington Post’s unnamed law-enforcement leakers, we know Mr. Nunes’s request deals with a “top secret intelligence source” of the FBI and CIA, who is a U.S. citizen and who was involved in the Russia collusion probe. When government agencies refer to sources, they mean people who appear to be average citizens but use their profession or contacts to spy for the agency. Ergo, we might take this to mean that the FBI secretly had a person on the payroll who used his or her non-FBI credentials to interact in some capacity with the Trump campaign.

This would amount to spying, and it is hugely disconcerting.

Sara Careter has more on yesterday’s meeting here. I have nothing to add but the observation that one can only draw adverse inferences from the DOJ/FBI’s handling of this evidence. Kim herself concludes that “what is clear is that we’ve barely scratched the surface of the FBI’s 2016 behavior, and the country will never get the straight story until President Trump moves to declassify everything possible.”

The Journal publishes a related column by retired FBI special agent and legal attaché Thomas Baker, “The FBI’s shocking disrespect for Congress.” Quotable quote: “I spent 33 years in the FBI, including several working in the Office of Congressional and Public Affairs. The recent deterioration in the bureau’s relationship with Congress is shocking. It truly is a change in culture.”

Am I the only one that reads that statement as a threat to kill off their own informants in order to protect the Feeb brass and their political masters?

In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

They're just using an expected ploy from their playbook: "We'd love to tell you but it would hurt national security."

Of course, they could just be lying (again) to cover up for what they did. Spying on a future prez of the U.S. as a joint operation by FBI and CIA with some foreign national is a very serious matter.

And national security may be important but so is the confidence of the American people that their prez is not a paid Russian stooge. National security be damned, either demonstrate that Trump is a crook or drop all these investigations. Now! It appears they expect Mueller to investigate Trump for his full 8 years in office and beyond. It's intolerable.

It's a strategic ploy to insure that Trump isn't re-elected so they can make sure they get another "business as usual" Dim or RINO in the WH in 2020.

They know they can only lose if anyone is allowed to focus on facts,so they spread innuendo.

In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

In the back of my mind I see the "Deepstate"(not sure what to really call them) are setting Nunes and Gowdy up as leakers once they divulge the truth. To me its really getting bad and the only way to make right is release everything! No way it will happen because Obama and Clinton have to much to lose. No telling who else would get ran over, McCrazy and bush?

An FBI informant in the Trump campaign?

Perhaps not so much an informant as a special infiltrator.

Carter Page could have been an FBI and/or Intelligence asset who passed through Russia to create a legend, and later sought to attach himself to the Trump campaign. Once he infiltrated the campaign HQ at Trump Tower, his mission could have been to make innocent contact with the campaign leadership. Then the FBI and/or intelligence agency could open an investigation into the alleged Russian connection of their own asset, using this manufactured garbage to obtain a FISA warrant to spy on everyone within two skips of their asset Carter Page, i.e., virtually the whole Trump campaign leadership.

Of course, this would involve admission of numerous felonies at the FISA court if it were confirmed that Page was known not to be a Russian agent, but rather well known to be an FBI/Intelligence asset, acting as an their agent in infiltrating Trump Tower.

Below is an interesting tidbit from 2017 where Page was stretching credulity about his campaign involvement. Page did not need much actual campaign involvement. He could have sat in a coffee shop in Trump Tower and emailed, messaged, or called a few select people. A two skip FISA warrant would take care of the rest.

Foreign policy adviser disavowed by Trump team says he ‘spent many hours’ at Trump campaign headquarters

Natasha Bertrand
Business Insider
Mar. 9, 2017, 1:39 PM

[excerpt]

In response to questions about Page's claim that he spent "many hours" at Trump campaign headquarters on the fifth floor of Trump Tower, an administration official who worked with the campaign pointed to the fact that its headquarters moved from the fifth floor to the 14th and 15th floors of Trump Tower before the Republican National Convention last July.

After checking with two people who worked on the fifth floor of Trump Tower before the headquarters moved, the official said these people don't recall ever seeing Carter Page there. Page had no badge, the official said, and never signed a non-disclosure agreement — two requirements of anyone working with the campaign in an official capacity. He also wasn't on the campaign's payroll, the official said, and did not have a campaign email account.

"He's clearly inflating his role with the campaign and trying to cash in on Trump's victory," the official said.

They seem to be indicating a foreign person with high political connections was the FBI/CIA source.

Maybe it's Nigel Farage. Or Julian Assange. LOL

Perhaps we have a spy working as an aide to Putin or the 8 other tycoons who actually run Russia.

They seem to be indicating a foreign person....

The Kimberly Strassel/WSJ article indicated the Nunes request pertains to a U.S. citizen involved in the Russia collusion investigation. It may be an intelligence source who worked, or is working, in a foreign country.

See also, Conservative Treehouse, article by sundance, speculating on the source being Stefan Halper.

Stefan Halper checks off every single box:

  • Currently overseas. vCurrent/Former CIA operative.
  • Current/Former source for FBI. vAnti-Trump motive.
  • Formerly put together this exact type of operation.
  • Connections to UK spies/intel community/politicians.
  • Connection to Australian spies/intel community.
  • Connection to Alexander Downer.
  • Political operative.
  • Wanted Clinton to win 2016 election.
  • Connects to Carter Page.
  • Connects to George Papadopoulos.
  • Connects to John Brennan. ETC.

Interesting suspect. I wouldn't be all that surprised if you're right.

Stassel is hinting that she knows or suspects. Which means she is actually fishing for someone to confirm it. Like someone with access to Nunes and the info from that recent briefing.

She might as well put up a sign: "Leaks wanted. Call Kimberly at WSJ."

It's not a bad bet for her. Someone in the Beltway is always ready to leak, if for no other reason than to get some revenge on the Other Guys for leaking something else.

Interesting suspect. I wouldn't be all that surprised if you're right.

I directly quoted Sundance at The Conservative Treehouse without expressing an opinion of my own.

I would still lean toward Carter Page being the cited source inside the Trump campaign. As far as I know, Stefan Halper was never a member of the Trump campaign, and was not a source inside the campaign.

I have not seen sufficient information to call it for Page.
