Title: US company linked to Russian oligarch paid $500,000 to Cohen

Avenatti alleged that Cohen received the following payments after the 2016 election: approximately half-a-million dollars from a company linked to Viktor Vekselberg, a Russian oligarch with close ties to the Kremlin; nearly $400,000 from pharmaceutical giant Novartis; $150,000 from Korea Aerospace Industries and $200,000 from telecommunications conglomerate AT&T.

The payments were made to the same bank account that Cohen had created in 2016 to execute the now infamous hush payment to Daniels, Avenatti said.

The stakes are sky-high for Cohen, who is currently under a federal criminal investigation by the US attorney's office in Manhattan and had his home, hotel room and office raided last month.

What the hell is that? Is it like six degrees of Kevin Bacon?

That sort of tabloid crap is all they got?

Bet taken. Mueller is imploding. Anything Mueller can do can be undone by Trump.

The Concord Management case is scheduled to proceed this afternoon over prosecution objections slapped down by the judge. Put up or shut up time is arriving. Discovery should be interesting.

Blow for Mueller as judge slaps down his request for delay in Russian troll farm case

In a motion late Friday, Mueller’s prosecutors disclosed that Concord’s attorneys, DC-based Eric Dubelier and Kate Seikaly, had made a slew of discovery requests demanding nonpublic details about the case and the investigation.

The prosecutors asked the court for a delay in order to determine whether Concord had been properly served, and verify that Dubelier and Seikaly were authorized to represent the company.

The defense attorneys blasted back in a response to the motion on Saturday, accusing the Mueller team of 'pettifoggery'.

'Defendant voluntarily appeared through counsel as provided for in [federal rules], and further intends to enter a plea of not guilty,' the filing read.

'Defendant has not sought a limited appearance nor has it moved to quash the summons. As such, the briefing sought by the Special Counsel’s motion is pettifoggery.'

Judge Friedrich's order means the arraignment will continue as scheduled on Wednesday.

The three companies named in the indictment are all reportedly controlled by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Russian businessman known as Russian President Vladimir Putin's 'chef'.

Yes,

I'm fairly sure that the efforts to connect one player to another in this case is being hampered by all those Russian names with the extra consonants and the lack of vowels.....

Avenatti Accuses The Wrong Michael Cohens Of Making ‘Fraudulent’ Payments

Chuck Ross
The Daily Caller
May 9th, 2018

Michael Avenatti, porn star Stormy Daniels’ lawyer, released a seven-page dossier on Tuesday containing a list of payments purportedly made to Michael Cohen, the lawyer for President Donald Trump.

But there is one problem with the document: two of the allegedly “fraudulent” payments were made to men named Michael Cohen who have no affiliation with Trump.

Russian firm pleads not guilty in Mueller election case

By Josh Gerstein
Politico
05/09/2018 03:44 PM EDT

A Russian company tied to a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin entered a not-guilty plea Wednesday in a U.S. criminal case charging that it funded internet trolls and polarizing social media advertisements in a bid to boost Donald Trump's chances of winning the 2016 presidential election.

[...]

"We waive formal reading of the indictment and enter a plea of not guilty and exercise our right to a speedy trial," Dubelier told U.S. Magistrate Judge G. Michael Harvey.

Prosecutors had raised concerns about whether the lawyers could appear for the firm without accepting a formal summons in the case, but Harvey said federal court rules permit a corporation to appear through a lawyer.

[...]

Prosecutors last week asked that the arraignment be delayed by more than a month, but U.S. District Court Judge Dabney Friedrich rejected that request.

During the hearing Wednesday, prosecutor Jeannie Rhee said her office obtained information from the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control that Dubelier's firm was representing both Concord Management and a related company known as Concord Catering, raising questions about whether he was appearing in court for both businesses.

Harvey suggested he found that interesting, but not particularly relevant to Wednesday's arraignment.

"OK, what would you like me to do with that?" the magistrate asked Rhee.

Dubelier said he wasn't authorized to appear in court for Concord Catering, a firm which he contended should never have been listed in the indictment returned in February.

"The government indicted a proverbial ham sandwich — somebody that didn't exist ... at the time period alleged by the government," the defense attorney said.

[snip]

It appears Mueller and the Keystone Kops indicted Concord Catering for alleged crimes it allegedly committed before it existed as a corporate entity.

What a stench that case will have for any judge or for the prosecutors. Bad for both, career-wise.

I reckon they will drop the charges rather than provide discovery material.

That also doesn't look good on the resume. And it'll provoke some Trumptweets about #FakeProsecutions being reported on by #FakeNews CNN.

I've read that Mueller may put his entire investigation on hold until after the 2018 midterms. It makes me wonder if Mueller will finish investigating before Trump leaves office.

They screwed up the indictments. They never intended to go to trial. They did not prepare for a real trial. They expected the Russian defendants to not show up. This was for the press only. Some incompetent nitwit named a few corporate entities as defendants, as well as the real people associated with the corporate entities. The real people ain't coming. As a legal fiction, the corporate entities are distinctly separate legal persons. They do not have to show up in the flesh, but may do so by their attorney. The attorneys for a corporate entity showed up, pleaded not guilty, and demanded a speedy trial. It's an aw shit moment.

Last week, they argued for a month delay because they were not sure the corporation had been properly served. This while the corporation was present in the court via its attorneys arguing to proceed. The judge's response amounted to "Come on, man."

I thought I detected a note of sarcasm from the judge when shooting them down on this obvious ploy to delay/distract. Almost like they're desperate to keep their legal fictions alive for a little longer, even at the risk of professional embarrassment at the case they had brought.

The judge's response amounted to "Come on, man."

I think this is the Phrase Of The Year for all the legal types out there, at least the conservative ones.

Avenatti, or the person who unlawfully leaked bank records of Michael Cohen to Avenatti, may also be headed for trouble. The Treasury Department has opened an investigation. The source screwed up in giving the records to Avenatti rather than a journalist. If a court orders him to identify his source, unlike a journalist Avenatti has no 1st Amendment claim available to protect his source.

Welcome back Chan!

Thanks. In case you missed it elsewhere, after a few months of delay (long story), I had an aortic valve replacement and five way bypass. Ugh. Still healing up.
