I thought most baseball guys wore protective cups over their private areas. Especially the catchers. Here's a little compilation of nutsmashing baseball vids. No followup info on who had to have surgery afterward. Apparently, management always wants them to wear cups. Some players resist even after an injury. That innocent bystander who got hit by a wild pitch from a ceremonial pitcher was most interesting. The guy never saw it coming. It's funny how these announcers avoid stating the obvious.
Well, sometimes it's a penis hit, not a testicle hit. So it isn't a sure thing other than a groinal strike. Sometimes it's both. You do read about possible testicular torsion injuries. One ball player had so much problem they had to remove a testicle. Another had a testicle swell up a few hours after being hit to the size of a grapefruit, making them afraid he would lose that one but they managed to save it. Anyway, that's what was in that article I posted a link to above. The players don't like to wear cups because they're less comfortable and they claim it can inhibit their natural range of motion during intense play. I can see their point but maybe that's just an argument for better cup designs. These guys aren't poor, they could afford custom cup sizes to fit them better.
The one where the ball bounced off the bat and down to hit the catcher's groin was striking. A baseball thrown by a pro pitcher has a lot of kinetic energy, over 90mph. Even a glancing blow off the bat to redirect it would leave it traveling at 50mph-60mph. And that is a lot to get hit with by a baseball, especially in soft tissue like the groin. And it's a pretty freakish occurrence but it will happen sooner or later. Hence the coaches always saying they want the players to wear cups even if they don't seem to enforce it.
Well, a penis fracture is probably worse than a testicle blow. Although it is doubtful these guys had an erection unless they REALLY like playing baseball. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penile_fracture
Stallions and bulls are susceptible to these as well. Vets make promises but it's rare for them to recover.
