One Utah teenager's prom dress has sparked a heated debate on the controversial issue of cultural appropriation. Keziah Daum, an 18-year-old senior at Woods Cross High School, Utah, received backlash after she posted photos of her dressed in a red qipao, a traditional Chinese dress, on prom night. After she posted them online, many on Twitter were quick to criticize her choice of wardrobe, accusing her of appropriating the Chinese culture, given she is not of Chinese descent. One of the first criticisms came from a Chinese American student who shared Daum’s post on Twitter with the caption “My culture is NOT your g------ prom dress,” pointing out the origins of qipao and its significance within a marginalized minority. “For it to simply be subject to American consumerism and cater to a white audience, is parallel to colonial ideology,” the student wrote. The post has since been retweeted over 41,000 times. She said she was not aware of the cultural context that’s deeply embedded with the garment’s history, one that can be traced back to the 17th century. “Shortly after I got the dress, I decided to do some research,” Daum said. After a quick search, she found that the qipao, or cheongsam (in Cantonese), came with a rich background and learned how it eventually became a symbol for female empowerment, which Daum said made her “love it even more.” On prom night, Daum said she received compliments from everyone, including her friends, advisers, fellow students she has never met and even waiters at the restaurant they ate at that night. Then at work a few days later, the backlash started pouring in, she said. “I wasn’t expecting it at all," Daum said. "My intention was never to cause any commotion or misunderstanding." But for many, the real offense Daum committed was when she posed in a group photo crouching down with their hands folded in front of them. However, when asked about the group photo, Daum told ABC News the gesture was referring to “Papa Bless,” a pose inspired by Ethan Klein from h3h3 Productions, a popular Israeli-American comedy YouTube channel. “At the time we were deciding on silly pictures, someone suggested those poses, so I just followed the crowd,” Daum said, “I see where [the critics] were coming from, but I don’t think they really got the full context.” She insists there was no racial undertone intended, adding, “I want to everyone to know that I respect the Chinese culture and every culture." Daum’s story has quickly gained traction, even making its way overseas to some Chinese publications. One online Chinese newspaper, The South China Morning Post, quoted people in Mainland China who seemed supportive, with some even calling it “cultural appreciation” instead of appropriation. When asked if she regretted her decision, Daum said no. “I would wear it again,” Daum said, adding, "I never imagined a simple rite of passage such as a prom would cause a discussion reaching many parts of the world. Perhaps it is an important discussion we need to have.”

She has the right to where whatever she wants. Note to the Chinese (and everybody else): you culture is not your property. It does not "belong" to you. It is a mass habit of a large number of people in a place and time. Other people can look at it and imitate whatever they like. You can bitch about it all you like, but since your culture does not belong to you, you're just a whining butthurt baby when you do. In fact, it's very important for people to put it IN YOUR FACE that you do NOT own your culture, and you are NOT the arbiter of who may do what. The English do not own the English language, for example, and would be ignored if they fulminated that the only people allowed to speak it are English. Of course, the English are not so stupid. People in America like to get "triggered" over stuff. I think it's important to annoy them so that they come to feel the full weight of their powerlessness and insignificance, and shut up. More people should wear that dress, just to make the point.
What's Chinese for "Fuck you"? Tell me they don't wear jeans in China.
