DYKER HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — A Brooklyn postal worker was arrested after 17,000 pieces of undelivered mail were found in his car, apartment and home, authorities said.

Aleksey Germash, a letter carrier who's worked for the United States Postal Service for more than 16 years, had undelivered mail from as far back as 2005 in his possession. He told investigators he kept the mail because he was overwhelmed by the amount that he had to deliver each day. Germash said he made sure to deliver "the important mail."

Officials found about 10,000 pieces of undelivered mail in his car, about 1,000 pieces in his locker and around 6,000 additional pieces of undelivered mail in his apartment.

They started investigating after they received information about full mail bags inside Germash's car. USPS employees found 20 full bags in his car on April 18.

He was arrested April 19.

Germash is not the first postal worker to keep mail instead of delivering it. Agents arrested a Long Island letter carrier earlier this month after they found dozens of bags filled with undelivered mail behind his home.

Anyone who thinks they may have been a victim of mail theft or slow delivery can call 888-USPS-OIG or file a complaint online at USPSOIG.gov.

He was a useless, good for nothing government worker instead of delivering the mail, he was chomping on doughnuts at the local korner koffee shop; kinda like ALL government workers.

Yeah ... just like silly cops and all other bureaucrats that have no talent other than to lie and betray the faith of citizens.

Not true. I used to be a government worker in both the army, and then the USPS. I will match my work history against yours or anyone else's.

I have seen this happen before. The guy wasn't lazy,he was ball-less. I have no doubt he is a white guy because white guys are the only employees the supervisors (mostly non-white) in the post office CAN bully. The way the game is played is they will find somebody that maybe has a couple of young children and a house payment to worry about, and then overburden him with mail and tell him "You WILL deliver this amount of mail each day or we will fire you!"

I have seen guys go out to deliver mail and literally run, skip lunch break, and take every short cut they can take including speed when driving, and jumping across low bushes in yards to try to keep up. No matter how hard they try, they are never successful because each time they DO manage to deliver all that mail in the allotted time, they just give them more to deliver the next time.

Management gets bonuses for getting more than the "standard" amount of mail delivered each day,and even though that is a big part of it,it is MY opinion most of them are just punkass bullies that like to use the threat of being fired and losing everything they own as the whip they can crack.

And the union is pretty much useless unless you are filing a sexual discrimination or racial discrimination claim. If you are a white male, you can't file either.

You have to stand up for yourself or you are screwed. A lot of the white guys either try to meet the impossible conditions,or just tell them to kiss their ass and walk away to get another job. Which suits postal management just fine. I was told when they hired me they were hiring me under protest because I was a disabled vet who had passed their test with a high score, but "If I had my way I would only hire who I wanted to hire." Guess what color his skin was.

Some guys just can't stand up for themselves, and they can't handle the pressure,so they hide mail or throw it away. I know of two who were fired and now have criminal convictions because they were caught leaving mail they weren't able to deliver during their 8 hour work day hidden and unguarded, and then going back after punching off the time clock to deliver it after work. They were caught because people complained about late mail delivery.

Yeah,it's easy to claim "they didn't have any balls and deserve whatever happened to them!",but the ones I knew were honest hard-working men that had young families, house payments, and car payments. Most had just gotten out of the military and had no civilian job related skills, and this was the only labor job they could find that paid a decent amount of money. If you have a family to provide for,you will do whatever it is you have to do to provide for them,or you lose the right to call yourself a man. Yeah,I and a few others stood up to them and told them to kiss our asses, but we either had job skills or didn't have families to worry about. Don't be too harsh on a man unless you have walked in his shoes. Meanwhile, there were Asians taking the post office exam when I took it that couldn't even speak, read,or write English, and they were allowed to have interpreters take the test with them to read the questions to them in their native language, and then write their answers for them in English.

I also knew one black guy in his 30's who couldn't read or write that was hired to deliver mail, and the post office sent him (and I assume the Asians) to a special class that taught them how to recognize names and addresses, and then were hired and only allowed to deliver mail on the one route they were assigned to deliver.

In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

I am addressing a serious charge about typical government, bureaucratic behaviour. It is based on my personal observations of individuals occupying jobs all the way to GS-18.

There is a difference of work ethic in the private sector of human behaviour than in the government sector. It is almost the same understanding about the dichotomy of capitalism vs. socialism: individual hard work contributes to the organization and self, based on a reward system vs. going along with a job description to get a guaranteed retirement for the remainder of their lives.

My observations of a typical bureaucrat is they sit around the water cooler chit-chatting about their retirement incomes; they don't take a periodic break for ten minutes; they take a break for hours to chit-chat about how to rape the taxpayer for doing NOTHING productive.

I hope that sums up my perceptions.

I wasn't a goobermint worker, but sometimes, as a contractor, we had to cram 5 hours of work into a 40 hour week.

Other times we worked our asses off for long hours.

Ebb and flow is what I call it.
