Not a yuge fan of Hall & Oates but they did create what was basically their own unique genre of music. There weren't many groups that survived the mid-70s into the synth/drum machine 80s.
I still maintain pop music -- REAL "music" -- died sometime in 1987. This is based on a run down of charting pop music starting in the early 60s. There was a yuge fall off in quality by 1987 that got progressively worse as "pop music" became Grunge and Rap...then Rap and whining chicks singing/rapping about nothing but sex, "hoes" and drugs.
Before 1987, good music and cogent meaningful lyrics transcended all ages, classes and demographics and appealed to all. If not for movie and advertisement sound tracks and YouTube, Millennials wouldn't have a clue; Fortunately many have found the 80s to be a treasure trove of undiscovered music.
