I just did this a few minutes ago and got a message about "a short wait of 4 to 6 minutes due to the unusually high amount of calls being received",but I don't think it took that long before a pleasant sounding woman answered the phone,asked me why I was cancelling my card after 3 years,and just said "OK,thank you,your card will be cancelled effective today." after I told her why. She said they would be sending me a letter within 24 hours to verify my account has been closed. I did this for my AMEX card several years ago and I hope the employees put my letter on the bulletin board in the lunch room. First I want to get their official letter in my hand that states my account there has been closed and my credit card is no longer vaid. BTW,they warned me on the phone that if I do close the account it will be closed forever,and that I would never be able to open an account with them again. I'm confused. I felt really great after mailing the letter. FWIW, I went on a 26 day cruise and was away from my home for 30 days. I knew I'd be a few days late with my snail mail payment (in full). I received a form letter. We're a number, not a human being. I was thrown into the deplorables/undesirables bin with a form letter telling me I'd be in their 29.9% interest category - usually reserved for 20-year-old college students.
