I have had it probably 4 or 5 years(not really sure how long). I also bought an Ipad soon after. They were pretty good until last summer when I got "that" update and they have become energy hogs. They will not accept some programs or devices. I have lost my Bluetooth to my Ipad. I have a slip on battery backup for my phone because I use it soo much. I never make throw the day and sometimes I have to charge it up 3 times to make it. With the slip on battery I can just push a button and its start charging my phone(really would like one for my Ipad too) instead of leaving it in my truck or office which I tend to forget. Well just installed another update last night and they did it again. I have not used my phone today other than people calling me. Took it off the charger around 7am and just looked I'm at 19% and its ready to shut down on me. Well I said a few choice words and hit the button to charge my phone. Guess what! It does not recognize my battery so now I have to plug into a wall charger! Which by the way I had to rebuy because the old ones where not compatible with my phone even thou I know when I bought them they were Apple approved from Amazon. This is it for me. If I replace these devices it will not be Apple product! Apple will have lost me for good. I provide phones for my guys and they chose Galaxy while I choose Apple. Well sounds like there will be a Galaxy in my future sooner than I wished. I really do hate changes. I have enough to deal with than learning more new stuff. Government regs keep me busy enough! I have had it probably 4 or 5 years(not really sure how long). This seems uninformed. All these devices with lithium batteries have a limited battery life. After 400-500 charges, they all decline to 75% or less of their original capacity. And it just declines from there. The 5S and the iPad that you have both are old and have battery age issues. Any device that old has battery age issues, most of them worse because Apple does have some of the best batteries around. You've got a bad battery, not a defective phone. You can get the battery replaced by a cellphone service tech. It's very ordinary, usually $35-$50. You can usually find them via a web search or on Craigslist. Even some small towns have a qualified tech that can do these repairs in a few hours. You could try to DIY but I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't really good with tiny electronics and those delicate cables. iFixIt: How to replace the battery in an iPhone 5s You can buy the kits with the battery and the needed tiny screwdrivers and spudge tools at Amazon for as little as $10. Of course, I do have Apple gadgets so I'm not neutral. But I don't expect my old iPad 2 or my old iPhone 4s to hold a charge the way they used to either. My 4s got a new battery when I bought it used and it has had good battery life the last 3-4 years that I've had it. But it is nowhere near as good as it was when I first started using it. If you've recharged your phone/pad more than a thousand times, battery life is a small fraction of what it was when it was new. Those are just the facts with any of these lithium battery phones/pads. I do think the next release of iOS is likely to exclude the iPhone 5s. So the 5s may be at the end of the road as far as iOS updates, no matter what. And many of the current features of iOS are disabled on it because it isn't powerful enough to run the newer features like multitasking and splitscreen. The Chinese phones (Hwaiwei) are being excluded by American companies. So you're down to Android phones like Samsung or the cheapos like ZTE. I did notice that a modern Google Android Go phone was just announced from ZTE for about $80. It's Google's latest offering for a budget phone OS. My guys are always breaking the glass screens. The other major issue is nothing is compatible after updates. Seems like after updates I lose functionality with other devices which irritates me. Look in Settings under Battery to see what it thinks your maximum battery capacity is and whether it is throttling your phone to save your battery. I have an iPhone 7 from late 2016. It says that it still has 91% of its original capacity. But I don't use it much, charge it every 5-6 days usually. It's in standby mode all the time with cellular, wifi and Bluetooth enabled. Blackberry has clawed its way back from the cliff. They might be poised to make something of a comeback. But they are mostly offering Android phones now that have the Blackberry keyboards on them. I notice that some big corp is bringing back Palm phones. Not the original PalmOS devices, just another flavor of Android under the Palm brand name. Can't recall who is doing it, maybe Motorola. Not only are they good phones and cheap (I tend to buy last years tech because I am cheap),but the LG's are the only cell phones I have found that allow me to make and receive calls inside my Quonset hut (galvanized steel) workshop. Think I paid 79 bucks for the last one I bought 3 or 4 years ago,and still using. It is a K8 V model. Even so, your phone should be able to run at least a half-day with only the built-in battery. Like I said, you've just got an old battery that's been charged too many times. The batteries don't last forever. It's like complaining that you have to replace a car battery after 5-6 years. If you want to make a change to Android, this might be the time to do it rather than spending for a replacement battery. Especially since iOS 12 will probably not support the 5s. iOS 9 was the last version that can run on my iPhone 4s so I still run it but you can't trust it to be secure at all, not the way you can if you're running a current iOS version like you are with the 5s. iOS 12 will supposedly be out in June but will drop support for iPhone 5 and 5s. Only the iPhone 6 or later will be able to run iOS 12. As for security, keep in mind that most Android phones never get more than one or two OS updates ever (except for Google's own pricey phones). The other manufacturers take Android and rewrite bits and pieces and you end up with lots of Android phones that just never get updated and are extremely vulnerable to hackers. Your old iPhone 5s got security updates just last week; name any Android phone over 3 years old that gets any updates at all. They don't exist, other than Google's Nexus and Pixel phones. Even Samsung's priciest phones rarely get more than a couple of OS updates before they're entirely abandoned, right around the time the two-year purchase contract at major carriers like AT&T/Verizon is up and it's time for a new crop of phones. Apple's walled garden and hardware have problems and shortcomings but Android is no bed of roses either when you really know what they're doing. A quality Android phone that gets regular updates costs as much as Apple hardware does and costs almost as much (but does have slightly better hardware like cameras). And let's face it,buying a 5 inch screen smart phone for $79 is so cheap why bother looking for anything better unless you are one of those droids that likes to watch movies,tv shows,porn,etc,etc,etc on your phone 24/7. In that case,you need to be locked away in a padded room until you get better,and you won't need a phone there. What the HELL is wrong with people? They buy 60+ inch lcd or plasma tvs for the the "Best viewing experience",and then watch tv on their freaking I-Pads. Some people really use their phones a lot for work and personal life. For them, having a smartphone with the features they want is a lot more important. They want the pricey phones with all the latest features. Most retirees don't need or want fancy phones. They don't spend hours a week on a phone usually. I rarely watch TV or movies on a tablet or phone. It's too small, not good enough sound quality. If you're going to waste time watching TV, watching it on a decent sized TV screen seems like it's part of the experience. And it is true that they are doing that. I felt that way with clan gatherings, funerals and weddings, etc. Why drag us all out to some boring event if all people do is sit around staring at their phones, looking like they wished they were somewhere else, alone with just their phone? But I finally realized that it wasn't just me being snubbed, they all do it to each other as well, all the time. The exception seems to be if they are placating someone higher in the family/business/social pecking order than they are. So people only put down their phones to kowtow to others they perceive as having higher status and ability to adversely affect their lives. Anyone of equal or lower status doesn't get that courtesy. I own an Android tablet for drone flying and have played with family members' iCult phones - both seem utterly retarded compared to my Z10 for efficient daily functions. I show the BB Hub to them and they say "why can't I do that?" and that's just one of many things BB did better. But even BB can't recreate the Hub in the braindead Android environment. A lot of people don't want to have a relationship with a phone tied to Big Apple.     : ) You should be good to go for years. LTE will be supported for years to come, even if they bring 5G phones to market soon and start upgrading towers. It's the old 3G phones that are really biting the dust. Supposedly, the major carriers will start pulling the plug on the 3g equipment on their towers in 2019. So a lot of old non-LTE phones will finally bite the dust, at least as far as national coverage. It might take a year or two for them to really eliminate that equipment. People are fundamentally alienated from a lot of traditional social norms. Much of it is the breakdown of immediate family and extended family relationships.
