During the so-called “March for Our Lives” this weekend, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting survivor Emma Gonzalez took the stage to speak while adorned in a jacket that featured a sewed-on patch of the Cuban flag. While the left attributed this to Gonzalez merely celebrating her Cuban heritage, Iowa Rep. Steve King felt differently. “This is how you look when you claim Cuban heritage yet don’t speak Spanish and ignore the fact that your ancestors fled the island when the dictatorship turned Cuba into a prison camp, after removing all weapons from its citizens; hence their right to self defense,” read a meme he shared on Facebook. Look: He had a point. According to station KXLY, Gonzalez’s “father fled Cuba” in 1968 to seek “refuge from Fidel Castro’s regime.” Despite Castro’s death in 2016, Cuba still remains a dictatorship beset by the “arbitrary detentions of dissidents” (i.e. the incarceration of those who speak out against those in power, *cough*), the censorship of opposing views and the widespread oppression of its citizens. Yet Gonzalez feels some sort of kinship with the totalitarian regime. Interestingly, Cuba’s state-controlled media feel similarly about her, according to Humberto Fontovo of Townhall: Over the past week Castro’s media has been in a tizzy celebrating the Parkland high school students and especially Emma Gonzalez’s NRA and Republican bashing. “If the president says it’s a terrible tragedy but he can’t do anything about it, I will gladly ask him how much money he gets from the National Rifle Association!—it doesn’t matter because we know, 30 million dollars..is that the value of these young lives to you Mr Trump?” Cuba’s Communist party paper quoted Emma Gonzalez, adding gleefully that “her powerful message quickly went viral.” The chummy relationship between Gonzalez and Cuba’s state-owned media makes sense given that they share similar goals. As noted by The Washington Times, “Ever since the Castro regime violently and ruthlessly rose to power in 1959, the presence of firearms has been nonexistent. Since installing a military dictatorship, the Castro brothers have made private gun ownership impossible, subject to regulation, and punishable by law. Cubans have thus been rendered defenseless — a factor convincing many Cubans to flee the communist nation for freedom elsewhere.” Though Gonzalez and her peers claim to just want more “gun safety,” their rhetoric paints a different picture. “When they give us that inch, that bump stock ban, we will take a mile. We are not here for bread crumbs. We are here for real change,” one of her peers said at the march Saturday. Based on both their rhetoric and Gonzalez’ Cuban-flag patch, it genuinely seems like these teenagers want to disarm all Americans. Were I granted just one wish today, it’d be that they be forced to speak with Cuban exile Manuel Martinez. They might learn much from him. “I’ve been through it, I’ve been there. You people don’t know what freedom is because you never lost it! You haven’t been tortured, you haven’t seen the assassinations, you haven’t [seen] mothers begging for the lives of their sons not to be killed because [their sons] want to be free. And they killed the mothers and they killed the sons,” while testifying against gun control during a hearing in Oregon five years ago: And that, my dear lads and lasses, is the ultimate reality of the gun control and disarmament you seek.
