I would've thought pseudo-religious texts would've been high on the list,
Drink the Kool-Aid by Jimmy Jones & Marshall Applewhite HA! Didn't quite catch on. Dunno why not. Applewhite -- had he waited until 2018 -- might well have wound up one of America's great TV personalities on one of Oprah's programs. L Ron Hubbard (Dianetics), Joseph Smith (Book of Mormon) have made their mark for sure. In a great sense they are influential books. But I'm not sure their philosophies have seeped universally into the collective psyches of most people across the board. What's insidious about the author's selection of works is that in his opinion, they all have affected/infected fundamental Western thought to some degree. I'm assuming (having read this book) that the common thread has been the institutional influence and re-calibrated ethics conferred by the authors on the West's collective psyche. Many people and politicians still cite and use "Machiavellian" ethics and perception of "good" and "honorable" to rationalize screwing others.
