By Eugene Robinson Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Sarah Palin is such a cold-eyed skeptic about the Copenhagen summit on climate change that it's no surprise she would call on President Obama not to attend. After all, Obama might join other leaders in acknowledging that warming is a "global challenge." He might entertain "opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions." He might even explore ways to "participate in carbon-trading markets."

Oh, wait. Those quotes aren't from some smug Euro-socialist manifesto. They're from an administrative order Palin signed in September 2007, as governor of Alaska, establishing a "sub-Cabinet" of top state officials to develop a strategy for dealing with climate change.

Back then, Palin was the governor of a state where "coastal erosion, thawing permafrost, retreating sea ice, record forest fires, and other changes are affecting, and will continue to affect, the lifestyles and livelihoods of Alaskans," as she wrote. Faced with that reality, she sensibly formed the high-level working group to chart a course of action.

"Climate change is not just an environmental issue," wrote Palin. "It is also a social, cultural, and economic issue important to all Alaskans."

Palin mentioned having created the climate change unit in an op-ed she wrote last week for The Post. What she didn't acknowledge was the contrast between what she says about climate change now and what she said -- and did -- about it as governor of our most at-risk state. When she was in office, Palin treated the issue as serious, complex and worthy of urgent attention. Now that she's the iconic leader of a populist movement that reacts with anger at the slightest whiff of pointy-headed, "one world" intellectualism, she writes as if the idea of seeking ways to mitigate climate change is a crock.

"Alaska's climate is warming," Palin wrote to Alaskans in a July 2008 newsletter. "While there have been warming and cooling trends before, climatologists tell us that the current rate of warming is unprecedented within the time of human civilization. Many experts predict that Alaska, along with our northern latitude neighbors, will warm at a faster pace than any other areas, and the warming will continue for decades."

In her administrative order, Palin instructed the sub-Cabinet group to develop recommendations on "the opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Alaska sources, including the expanded use of alternative fuels, energy conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, land use management, and transportation planning." She also instructed the group to look into "carbon-trading markets."

But in her op-ed last week, Palin -- while acknowledging "natural, cyclical environmental trends" and the possibility that human activity might be contributing to warming -- states flatly that "any potential benefits of proposed emissions reduction policies are far outweighed by their economic costs." What she once called "carbon-trading markets" she now denounces as "the Democrats' cap-and-tax proposal."

Palin cites the "Climate-gate" e-mail scandal as reason enough for the president to skip the Copenhagen summit. I've written about those e-mails and why, despite what skeptics say, they do not begin to prove that climate science is fraudulent, politicized or fundamentally flawed. The most compelling evidence for climate change is found in the Arctic, and Palin has seen it firsthand.

In her 2008 newsletter, Palin mentioned one coastal village, Newtok, that would have to be relocated because of flooding due to the effects of warmer temperatures. Since then, relocation plans have been developed for two more towns, Shishmaref and Kivalina. The Army Corps of Engineers has identified more than 160 villages that are threatened, according to a recent newsletter from Palin's successor, Gov. Sean Parnell. At least 31 are judged to be in "imminent" peril.

In case anyone was wondering, Palin's home town of Wasilla sits at an elevation of 333 feet -- high and dry.

The chairman of the Cabinet working group that Palin assembled to develop a climate change strategy, Larry Hartig, is scheduled to deliver a presentation at Copenhagen. Posted in advance on the Internet, the presentation shows that Alaskans aren't just fretting about the abstract possibility of effects from warming. They're dealing with a real, live situation.

I predict we'll see more artful dodges of this kind from Palin. She made any number of pragmatic, reasonable, smart decisions as governor -- and now, it seems, will be obliged to renounce them all. Her tea-party legions have one answer -- a shouted "No!" -- for every question.

Palin knows better, but she has to fiddle her followers' chosen tune -- not while Rome burns, but while Nome melts.

I've been watching Palin ever since she came into the mainstream a year ago. And the first time I saw her, my thought was, "what a breath of fresh air". Then, I started to look at WHO was supporting her, Cheney, Bush, Bloomberg, when she suddenly stepped down from her position as governor. This bothered me a great deal because I am disgusted with the Republican Party. I'm not a Democrat either. Prefer to be totally Independent.

I don't trust Palin. And my way of reading people are usually right on without mixture of personal bias. I believe Palin would make a great candidate for a leader if she didn't use this notion that because she is a female and can shoot a gun, that she is the answer to our problems. If a candidate like Palin has to demonstrate her femaleness with Americans (which is really a crutch just like affirmative-action), to get us to adore and support her, she is dead wrong. I want to know where her head is on issues with China and Russia. I want to know what she plans to do about this notion on American jobs being exported overseas. Real serious issues!

If all the time that you have been following her is just for a year, you simply don't "know" shit about Governor Palin. (I don't mean that as an insult to you, but to the so called "media" et. al.)

It's NOT her that makes such things "issues", they are simply TRUE. It is all of the enemies of America and Liberty, OUR enemies, who TRY to make such things an issue.

As to wanting to know what she believes and plans to do on real serious issues, I totally agree.

But all that is out there right now is a concerted effort to destroy her and her family in any way possible.

BOTH the demonRATs AND the repukelican't hate and FEAR her.

But no one person is America's salvation.

Unquestioning hero worship is for children, mental defectives, and SLAVES.

It has NO place in America.

No insult at all and you are CORRECT! I don't know WHO this woman is at all. That's just it. I don't even know what the hell she stands for at all. She's is vague. But I do know that she is not vague on her stance on illegals coming into this country. She is for it!

And as for your statement about unquestioning hero worship, there are no hero's in my book except Jesus Christ. I have NEVER needed to look for any other. But I certainly do reserve the right to question and observe public servants.

No you certainly do NOT "know" that.

I don't personally "know" her. But I'm an Alaskan who has lived here over thirty years. I live about fifty miles north of Wasilla. Wasilla is the closest "big" town.

I have been following her career since she was on the PTA. I do know people who grew up with her.

Governor Palin has NEVER supported any such thing as allowing illegal aliens into OUR country.

During a campaign where she was the VICE presidential candidate she said that she supported a "path to citizenship". She has never defined what such a path would entail to my knowledge.

So I won't make one up for her.

If she wanted all illegals deported and then made to get into line after all people who had never invaded OUR country, THAT would be one possible path to citizenship. You have to listen and parse every frikkin word that any politician says,

OUR enemies, who want to destroy her and her family at any cost, don't want you actually THINKING.

Of course I have the advantage of knowing who and what she really is, I can relax to some extent because of her past actions which I am famiilar with from direct experience. In no way do I always agree with her, the mere idea that such a thing is a requirement to support any politician is on it's face absurd imo.

But I do trust her to do her honest best, and to always do what she says that she will do, and NOT to ever put her self interests before this nation's and people's interests.

I agree with you in the main about Our Lord, but I have millions of heros, ALL of the the "ordinary" people who work hard and honestly to support themselves, their families and their way of life are ALL my heros.

You are also completely correct in your ABSOLUTE right and DUTY to question and "try" ALL politicians.

But these brain dead know nothing bitter PDS insane idiots who attack her and her FAMILY are tools of ALL of OUR enemies, and IMO base scum. (Because they attack HER FAMILY which is beyond the pale imo).

No you certainly do NOT "know" that.

See my post #173 where I cited two pages to Palin being interviewed on her stance on pro-amnesty. She is for it and even said so herself. Read it, Mad Dog. Read it again. Straight from the source. I didn't make it up. She said it herself! Those are her words. She is FOR AMNESTY. And that makes her unsuitable for the presidency. Anybody who stands FOR amnesty of illegal aliens, is a traitor! Palin, just by her own admission, is telling Americans who she represents. And its not Americans.

Let Americans read that interview for themselves. If they want to discredit the source (Univision) then somebody needs to explain how Palin's statements got in there.

No need to insult, Mad Dog. It's obvious that you choose to ignore the fact what she actually stated. Your initial response to those posted interviews was that the interview was a lie!

I am familiar with Univision enough to know they have been around for some time. And when they interview American diplomats, they do so for the purpose of informing their people, the Latino population, what and where our American diplomats stand on international issues concerning NAFTA-GATT, trade issues with Mexico, drug cartel issues, and of course, amnesty.

And so far, that interview remains undisputed!

I'm NOT insulting, I'm stating a FACT.

"A" path is not a specific phrase.

My initial response was that the interpretation of what she actually said, was, and IS, a F ing LIE.

I'm NOT going to chew your food for you, or cut the crust off of your bread for you, and neither is Governor Palin.

A basic level of intelligence and comprehension is required by a free people who wish to maintain a republic. Maybe it's too late? So many so called adults seem to be incapable of even elementary levels of deductive thought and comprehension, or intellectual honesty.

Even though I donned my rain gear before getting into this, I'm done pi$$ing into the wind on this tonight.

Thanks for being civil, and NOT spit flecked PDS insane, I really do honestly appreciate it.

No the fact is you cannot accept the interview as being undisputed.

Palin IS FOR AMNESTY. If its a lie, Omnivision would have been sued a long time ago for impersonating Palin and making up interviews like this to put her in a false light.

The interview remains undisputed!

And I'm going to keep that interview because I have a feeling it will suddenly "disappear" around the time Palin runs for office.

Right now, most people are unaware of where Palin stands on illegal immigration. I've noticed that even Free Republic had referenced some of her quotes but not the full interview like this one. But Univision, and to those like myself and others informed about this, are not "in the dark" about where she stands. This interview will be brought up to her in two years from now and she will have some explaining to do to the American people. You see this immigration issue is KEY as to where one's loyalty stands with Americans.

"A" path is not a specific phrase.

Here. From my post #173, of that interview, pg 2, I quote that interview in part [emphasized for clarity]:

As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?

There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that's not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants? No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They've got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

--------------------------------------------------------

The fact is, Palin is PRO AMNESTY. And because she is pro-amnesty, she supports illegal aliens coming into this country which violates our immigration laws. We either have laws in this country or we don't! You either go by the law or you are a traitor because when you allow illegals into this country you are aiding and abetting criminal aliens and possible potential terrorists! No if ands or buts about this!

Palin doesn't seem to be too concerned about immigration laws here at all. It appears flat out that she is pro-amnesty ALL THE WAY! These illegals all need to be deported! Every damn one of them. And if you have a problem with deporting illegals on this country than, you may as well be supporting those like Palin, McCain, Bush, Cheney, etc, guilty of aiding and abetting criminal aliens and potential terrorists. September 11 would NEVER have happened had we known who these people were that were in this country illegally getting access to our airplanes AND DEPORTED THEM.

"SHE'S DANCING AROUND THIS! She does NOT want to commit herself to any one stance on this issue because it will haunt her when she runs for president (which she will do) McCain did the same thing."

I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here."

Is that her complete position as outlined at Univison and answer Tom?

When I am watching a candidate, I listen to what they say and I listen to every word they say. When McCain ran for office, I knew he was for amnesty which was why I didn't like him from the start. He was for open borders. Plain and simple.

It is my understanding that Ron Paul supports amnesty too.

I want nothing to do with a candidate that supports amnesty or open borders! I want a candidate that supports deporting illegals back to their country.

To be fair I refer you to post 173 where I cited that interview.

I don't have a problem understanding where Palin is on this issue. It's in black and white. But to the die hard Palin supporters, they choose to turn the other way on this issue even if its right under their nose.

Why don't you ask Sarah Palin!

You didn't, but you had no problem lying about what she said! I asked where or if you were educated. You failed to answer so I have to assume you haven't been educated.

What does the sentence below mean to you?

It does not mean amnesty. If you believe it does, you don't fookin know the definition of amnesty!

That's what liberals always state when they get their oversized asses handed to them.
