With the holiday season upon us, and the end of the year fast approaching, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 3326—the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2010. With the passage of this bill, NRA-ILA wraps up its appropriations work for the year.

Our efforts on the huge spending bill were rewarded with the restoration of a longstanding rider to protect M-1 carbines, M-1 Garands, M-14s, .22 caliber rifles, and others from being destroyed.

This language also includes a prohibition on the destruction of small arms ammunition and components, and a response to the short-lived concern over destruction of spent brass casings earlier this year.

Section 8019 of the bill reads: "None of the funds available to the Department of Defense may be used to demilitarize or dispose of M-1 Carbines, M-1 Garand rifles, M-14 rifles, .22 caliber rifles, .30 caliber rifles, or M-1911 pistols, or to demilitarize or destroy small arms ammunition or ammunition components that are not otherwise prohibited from commercial sale under Federal law, unless the small arms ammunition or ammunition components are certified by the Secretary of the Army or designee as unserviceable or unsafe for further use."

NRA-ILA would like to thank U.S. Representative John Murtha (D-PA) for his help in getting the rider restored and expanded.

Having been fooled too many times in the past I don't entirely trust the sincerity of the NRA,but I decided to post this anyway.

Think I'll go to the range again this weekend.

Last week I met the firearms instructor for my city's police dept. there. He was there with his grandson. He had some very nice gear and invited me to fire all I wanted. I declined at first but he said, "Never turn down the chance to fire another man's ammo". LOL!

He pulled out some AK's, some AR's, an SKS, an M1, and several side arms.

I had this with me http://www.kel-tec-cnc.com/su16d.htm and he wanted to fire it. After he fired it he said he HAD to have one.

A very nice guy. Very pro 2nd amendment.

BTW,I know nothing about ,and had never even heard of that weapon before your post, but if it's as well made and reliable as the Kel-Tec handguns,it's a good rifle for what it was designed for.

I bought a Kel Tec P11 years ago and it impressed me, so I bought more from Kel Tec.

The P11 of course isn't accurate at all past a certain range, but it's been as reliable as any I've ever owned. Never jammed or misfired.

I love the su16. Overall very impressed with Kel Tec.

Unless she is an experienced shooter that is used to carrying everyday, don't.

Get her a snub-nosed 22LR revolver and take the rear sight off and file down all the rough or sharp edges on the front sight, making it round and smooth so it won't snag on anything.

One I recommend is the Taurus Ultra-Lite 9 shot 22 LR snub nose revolver. Specifically, this one. I would also round off the sharp edges on the hammer if it were me.

www.taurus-handguns.com/i...940029UL_M94__22LR_2.aspx

Load that sucker up with 9 CCI "Stinger" hollowpoints and it becomes a effective self-defense weapon. If you shoot somebody in the eye socket,it makes no difference if you were shooting a 22 than if you were shooting a 44 magnum. All you can kill them is dead.

AND....since it is also true that a miss with a 22 is just as effective as a miss with a 44 Magnum, this makes the 22 more attractive because she is less likely to miss. She is less likely to miss because she can afford to buy 22 caliber ammo a thousand rounds at a time to practice with, and this means she will be more familiar and comfortable with the gun and she will know where it shoots when she pulls the trigger.

PLUS...it is very light which means she is more likely to carry it with her when she leaves the house,AND it doesn't have a safety she has to remember to disengage under pressure before she can fire it. Revolvers are the original "point and click" devices. You just point them and keep pulling the trigger until it starts clicking.

Not to mention that you can shoot a revolver right from your coat pocket without ever taking it out,and you can't so this with a autoloader because it will jam. Not that I recommend doing this because your coat might catch fire, but there is an advantage to having a gun already in your hand if you think you might be in danger, but not confident enough about it that you are willing to pull it out and point it at somebody.

If you are bound and determined to get her something bigger than a 22,but this one for her. It's a 38 Special, but 38 Specials don't really have enough recoil or muzzle blast to bother her. Their only disadvantage over the 22 is the ammo is much more expensive.

Don't even THINK about buying a snub-nosed magnum revolver. The recoil and the muzzle blast are horrific, and you end up only getting 38 Special velocities anywhay.

Don't let the goofy look of the hammer shround throw you. If they had this version in 22 LR,that's the one I would recommend you buy. The shroud keeps the hammer from snagging on your pants or coat pocket when you go to pull the gun out.

Thanks for the advice Pete.

You really think the .22 is heavy enough?

She's not that experienced, and I like the thought of the smaller caliber. She has expressed an interest in revolvers too, her sister has a 38 S&W.

The long and hard trigger pull on the P11 is just to much for her.

Wow! That is truly goofy looking. LOL!

I kind of like it though. I've always been attracted to ugly guns and ugly cars for some strange reason I've yet to figure out.
