At least 17 people were dead after a 19-year-old former student opened fire at a South Florida high school on Wednesday afternoon, officials said. The suspect was identified as Nikolaus Cruz, a former student who had been expelled from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. He said at least 14 other people were injured in addition to the 17 people killed. Officials believe the gunman had one AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle, but it was unclear if he had any other weapons. The suspect "was taken into custody about an hour after he left Stoneman Douglas after he committed this horrific, detestable act," Israel said. Federal and local authorities told NBC News there was no indication that the gunman had an accomplice or accomplices.

How long before we learn which antidepressants and psychotic drugs he was on (or had been on for years)? What is surprising is how seldom people ask why it is always these psychiatric drugs that are involved in these mass shootings. Just regular drinkers or pot smokers almost never do this stuff. A smallish number of these crimes are committed by people who are very mentally ill, like the Aurora theater shooter. Off in a world of their own, hearing voices, etc. These drugs are dangerous and harmful. These results are predictable. And general practitioners hand them out like candy with almost no followup care at all. Psychiatric drugs are greatly overprescribed in this country. I think over half of all these massacres can be traced directly to irresponsible prescriptions of psychiatric drugs by GPs who aren't qualified to issue these medicines and who have no responsibility to followup on patient care when they do write the prescriptions.

Maybe the police should have their guns taken away, and given to some other gangbangers who are on the scene and willing to use them to defend their turf, the school. When seconds count the police are minutes away, at the doughnut shop. The death toll is all tallied up by the time they waddle over to their squad car and squeeze in.
Hard truths aren't an error. But unduly harsh language can be self-defeating. Anyway, I'm not your nanny and don't want to be. I didn't really intend to scold but I took some exception to how hard your words sounded.
Every comment I have seen regarding this atrocity ignores the 800-pound elephant in the room: The shooter was an Hispanic male. If we as a white Christian nation refuse to come to terms with the essential inadmissibility of the assunption that 3rd world barbarians are assimilatable into an advanced 1st world culture, we have only ourselves to blame for our own demise. Hispanic males as well as females as a culture have serious anger control issues as well as self-control issues as well as issues with not being able to handle the frustrations our sophisticated society by definition metes out on a daily basis to all of us. You can make very strong statements without having to look deliberately heartless over the murders of 20 kids aged 6 and 7 at they cowered in their Newtown school. You complain that I sound soft. I'm complaining that you sound like a psychopath. I'm not soft. And I don't think you're a psychopath. So you shouldn't talk like one if you actually ever want to persuade someone. Tell you what. You travel down to Newtown and explain your theory to them in person, using exactly the language you used above. They'd love to hear from you. Not that it matters. Neither of us is going to stomp off in a huff anyway. So if you feel a deep emotional need to dance on the graves of the 20 dead toddlers murdered in Newtown, go right ahead. Celebrate it! Revel in it. Throw annual parties with BBQ and fireworks and a small carnival to commemorate it. Otherwise, maybe snowflakes will start going soft or something.
