Republican Rep. Jim Jordan: Paul Ryan has 'got problems'

Washington (CNN)One of the leading voices of the House Freedom Caucus warned Sunday that House Speaker Paul Ryan was facing problems from fellow Republicans dissatisfied with his leadership.

Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan said the recently passed government funding agreement, which raises budget caps by $300 billion over two years, was "not consistent" with the promises Republicans made to cut spending, and that Ryan's support for the deal undermined his leadership.

"Do I think the speaker has problems? Yes, I do," Jordan said.

He noted that Ryan entered the national stage as one of the party's top hawks on deficit spending. "Just a few years ago, he was viewed as the leader of fiscal responsibility in our party," Jordan said. "And now he presides over a bill that increases spending $300 billion, a trillion-dollar deficit, when we were so poised to win this fight. Of course he's got problems."

Asked if this meant he thought it was time for Republicans to change their leadership, Jordan demurred, saying, "We'll have that debate at the appropriate time." J ordan was among the Republicans who voted against the package citing concerns over increased spending, and on the other side of the Capitol, Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul railed against his colleagues for what he called "hypocrisy" on spending and held the floor of the Senate through Thursday evening, slipping the government into a temporary shutdown.

Paul, in an interview on CBS "Face the Nation," defended his move and said many Republicans have not reckoned their calls for decreased spending with their support for increased military budgets. "There's sort of this question, is the military budget too small or maybe is our mission too large around the world?" Paul said. "And because Republicans are unwilling to confront that they want more, more, more for military spending."

In a separate interview on CBS, White House budget director Mick Mulvaney defended the deal President Donald Trump approved of and said to get a boost in military spending, they had to give in to some Democratic demands. "They held the Defense Department hostage, and we had to pay that ransom," Mulvaney said.

Mulvaney, who was himself a member of the House Freedom Caucus until Trump tapped him for budget director, also said he probably would not have voted for the deal if he were still in Congress.

"My job as the director of the Office of Management Budget is to try to get the President's agenda passed," Mulvaney said. "And right now the top priority for this President was getting the Defense Department the money necessary to defend the nation."

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan: Paul Ryan has 'got problems'
That’s true.

One of the biggest problems Ryan has is the Freedom Caucus.

The first order of business for the newly formed Freedom Caucus was to get rid of John Boehner.

They did that and now they want to get rid of Ryan.

Will the Freedom Caucus ever be satisfied?

The answer to that is, no.

It is as Rep. Adam Kinzinger says, Jim Jordan never misses an opportunity to slam somebody in his own party. In fact, I see him do that more often than he does anybody else.

“We have met the enemy....and the enemy is us.”

Here's the big problem with Jim Jordan's critique of Paul Ryan:

Getting rid of Paul Ryan would be a very bad idea for Republicans.

(CNN)Jim Jordan isn't happy with Paul Ryan.

The Ohio conservative made that clear during an interview on "Fox News Sunday" when asked about the speaker of the House.

Do I think the speaker has problems?" Jordan said. "Yes I do, particularly now as we head into this big immigration debate."

When "FNS" host Chris Wallace asked whether it was time for the party to move on from Ryan as speaker, Jordan responded:

We'll have that debate at the appropriate time. You asked me if there's concerns with the speaker. I think there are big concerns because he just presided over one of the biggest spending increases in the history of the country at a time when we were elected to do just the opposite."

So. That happened.

Conservative unrest with Republican leadership is not exactly a new storyline. Just ask the man Ryan replaced as speaker -- John Boehner decided to call it quits after weathering a series of disappointing legislative defeats engineered by Jordan and his fellow members of the House Freedom Caucus.

Know what else isn't new? Conservatives agitating for a leadership change with absolutely no next step or thought-out strategy.

The Boehner resignation is instructive.

When Boehner walked away -- or announced his plan to walk away in September 2015 -- it very quickly became clear that the same forces that forced his hand had absolutely no plan to replace him.

Boehner's second in command -- California Rep. Kevin McCarthy -- made an aborted attempt to claim the top job but it quickly became clear that conservatives wouldn't be for him and he pulled out of the race before it even started.

Thus began the long, dark tea-time of the Republican soul. The three weeks from the October 8 McCarthy failure to the October 29 election of Ryan as speaker made very clear that while the House Freedom Caucus was a powerful blockade to Republican leadership, it simply lacked the cohesion -- and raw numbers -- to be the governing wing of the party. There's nothing to indicate that things have changed since 2015.

Jordan, then Rep. Jason Chaffetz (Utah), Rep. Daniel Webster (Fla.), Rep. Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), Rep. Jeb Hensarling (Texas) and lots and lots of other conservatives either floated their own names or watched as their names were floated in the interregnum.

And almost as soon as their names emerged, it became clear that they simply didn't have the votes to come even close to winning a majority of the majority.

Which is when the recruitment of Ryan began. The Wisconsin Republican had initially said "no" to overtures that he step into the leadership void. But as the days dragged on and it became clear that no one else in the House Republican conference could get anywhere near enough support, Ryan reconsidered. Once he changed his mind, he won easily.

Here's the lesson to take from that bit of history: The House Freedom Caucus had zero plan other than getting rid of Boehner.

Here's their plan, in fact:
Step 1: Get rid of person we don't like
Step 2: ?????
Step 3: Permanent conservative governance
It, um, didn't work out that way in 2015. And it won't work that way in 2018, or 2019 or 2020 either.

It's possible that Jordan could capitalize on unrest within the Republican ranks centered on the massive growth of the deficit under GOP leadership to either beat Ryan or make his life much more uncomfortable.

But there is simply no one waiting in the wings that has even close to the profile of Ryan. McCarthy, the second-ranking House Republican, already lost once. Majority Whip Steve Scalise continues the long recovery from being shot at a baseball practice and would have a hard time amassing the necessary support.

Chaffetz resigned to become a cable TV personality. South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, who is regarded highly by lots of conservatives, is retiring this fall. Jordan could have support within his clique but would struggle mightily outside of it. Ditto Rep. Mark Meadows (N.C.), the current chair of the House Freedom Caucus. The only person who, I think, could make a semi-cogent argument to be Speaker is North Carolina Rep. Patrick McHenry. But he seems to be biding his time and seems to have zero interest in an attempted coup on Ryan.

The point here is that Jordan's carping is sound and fury, signifying not much. If congressional Republicans managed to throw Ryan out, it would be cutting off their noses despite their faces. They may not love everything he does -- and the deficit embiggening is clearly antithetical to the principles Ryan rose to national prominence on nearly a decade ago -- but there is simply no one even close to Ryan's stature operating in the House conference right now.

And that very much includes Jim Jordan.

Here's a nice photo of them. I saw another where they were standing together, thick as thieves, in the Oval Office when Trump signed a bill, I think maybe one having to do with coal but I can't locate it again.

You don't have that much room to bitch about Republicans from other states when the biggest backstabber of the modern GOP and of conservatives generally is a senator from your own state. When is that old bag of shit finally going to croak? He got my hopes up by being too sick to show up for work the last week or so but I've been disappointed before. He's toying with us 'cause he knows we want him gone. I keep thinking that he's plotting to hand his seat off to his idiot daughter or to his son in the military but I don't think he can sell that to the voters.

Geeeeze....Those two are asshole buddies on the same mission. Rand Paul is the adopted Senate brother to the House Freedom Caucus. They spend more time with each other than they spend with their wives. Rand Paul does as much bad-mouthing of Republicans as does Him Jordan. Why would they not be pictured together....sadistically smiling?

“Conservative Capitol Hill lawmakers Rep. Jim Jordan and Sen. Rand Paul railed Sunday against fellow Republicans.” There they go again ...

Of course Jim Jordan will never slam Ron Paul and he will not slam anyone else in the secretive House society that meets behind closed door and REFUSES to release the names of their members.

... they were standing together, thick as thieves,
“Thick as thieves.”

Gotta just love that analogy....and I must show you this:

Not only do they act like the Mafioso....they even dress to look like the Mafioso.

You don't have that much room to bitch about Republicans from other states when the biggest backstabber of the modern GOP and of conservatives generally is a senator from your own state.
I have all the room I want to take to complain about any and all Republicans I feel like complaining about....and I will do just that. I agree with you that John McCain is one of the biggest backstabbers in the modern GOP and yes, he is from my home state. But that has nothing to do with this thread. If you wish to complain about John McCain, then start a new thread and I will be the first to post there and support you. So, I am not at this time dealing with John McCain. I am dealing with the assholes in the Freedom Caucus and I definitely will stay on POINT.
When is that old bag of shit finally going to croak?
How the fuck am I supposed to know that. I am not his doctor, But if you have such an interest, then call the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale and ask for what information they can give you. The phone number for the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale is 480-301-1735
He got my hopes up by being too sick to show up for work the last week or so but I've been disappointed before.
This is strong evidence that you obviously are not very good at allowing the experiencing of emotions in full without trying to speed up the process. You need to accept that life is full of disappointments. Therefore you must learn to cope with your frustrations. “Don't let today's disappointments cast a shadow on tomorrow's dreams.” ~Unknown.
He's toying with us 'cause he knows we want him gone.
That’s bullshit.
I keep thinking that he's plotting to hand his seat off to his idiot daughter or to his son in the military but I don't think he can sell that to the voters.
Ahem....that is not the way it works. You just DON’T hand off a Senate seat in America.

They don't hate Trump, because he signs onto whatever crap they hand him. This was also dubyas policy to sign anything that passed congress for his first term, and most of his second. He eventually ended up vetoing something, which I can't recall at the moment.

All the phony angst and controversy between the D's and the R's is just kabuki theater. The D&R party is a well oiled machine designed to propagate and enrich itself at the expense of Joe&Jane Sixpack, and give them no choice but to vote for one of their two candidates whom are identical except for the letter after their names.

It's a con game, and you're the mark! Just say NO to D&R. It's not the solution by itself, but it's a good start towards something better.

The exception to that rule is those few candidates that are actually worth voting for like Jim Jordan, Thomas Massie, Walter B. Jones, Justin Amash, Ron Wyden, Rand Paul and possibly a few more of that ilk. Just say NO to the real Republicans & Democrats, and only vote for the good guys, IMO.

I agree. The House Freedom Caucus is pretty good, about 30 members. Mick Mulvaney at the WH is very thick with these guys. So is Mike Lee (could be more courageous). So is Ted Cruz (when he isn't up for re-election but they all get more cowardly when facing the voters).

But Rand Paul is not in either picture. The guy you think is Rand is actually Harvey Keitel. The picture is kinda mediocre but that is who it is.

If you don't believe me, just ask our own misterwhite, who takes his screen name from Keitel's character in Reservoir Dogs named (what else?) Mister White.

Keitel went on to another iconic role in Tarentino's Pulp Fiction.

The photo you posted is from the movie poster and soundtrack. You can see various angles of that shot from the movie trailer at YouBoob.

True Romance(written by Tarantino) is terrific.

Never saw it but he only wrote it.

Django wasn't bad.

It wasn't good either.

His third great movie was Natural Born Killers. That one is pretty gritty. I still laugh over Rodney Dangerfield in a comedic role as the child-molesting father. Yikes! But he got justice too. Watching that movie back in the Nineties was a real punch in the gut.

And there was his vampire movie also, From Dusk Till Dawn. Cluny was good in it as was Tarentino playing a psychotic sex killer, all on a journey in an RV with a Baptist preacher and his kids into Mexico.

Gatlin should definitely watch all four of these movies.     : )
