You would be hard pressed to find a fairer way to decide between two options than a coin toss. It is the ultimate equalizer. Coins can’t be manipulated. They can’t see the options. They are inanimate objects. For many years the coin toss has been successfully used in sporting events, to determine winners of sibling rivalry and decide who gets the last piece of pizza. It is one of the greatest ways to settle a dispute once and for all when both parties know the outcome is indisputable. That is …Until coins became racist. ….Because today, what isn’t racist? The Parade of Nations is always an exciting part of the opening ceremonies at the Olympics and it certainly is a great honor to be chosen to carry the flag of your nation. Every athlete who makes it to the Olympics have worked incredibly hard and deserve to be there, but only one can be chosen for the honor of flag bearer. The person is chosen by vote, and in the event of a tie, a coin is tossed. Seems pretty reasonable to me. But it seems, reason is in short supply these days. H/T Daily Wire: Speed skater Shani Davis has boycotted the opening ceremony at the winter Olympics after a coin toss was used to decide who would lead out the U.S. delegation. That decision put luge star Erin Hamlin at the front of the pack. On Friday, she beamed a broad smile as she carried the U.S. flag in Pyeongchang, South Korea, to the tune of “Gangnam Style.” Hamlin, 31, was chosen in a coin toss with Davis, 35, one of just a few black athletes on Team USA. That coin flip came after the two tied 4-4 in a vote among eight U.S. winter sport federations. But Davis was angry, saying he should have been picked and suggesting that race played a role in the selection. Davis didn’t say how the coin was “dishonorably tossed.” Hamlin said in a statement that she was “honored and excited” to be named flag-bearer, adding “this is something totally different.” “It’s something that is because of that hard work. People acknowledge that and respect that. It’s a big privilege to represent Team USA,” she said. Here I thought Olympic athletes have risen to the top because they have an uncanny ability to overcome failure. They accept challenges and instead of quitting, they keep going. They are supposed to be the epitome of sportsmanship, but apparently not anymore. It seems even Olympic athletes are subject to the trap of “when you don’t get your way, blame racism.” This time, I am hopeful that level headed people will prevail and not accept Davis’ childish behavior. He is simply a sore loser and probably has been waiting for his chance to play the race card. What a disgrace! I am glad this schmuck will not be attending the opening ceremony. Let him sit and stew in his defeat like a little baby. Hamlin has already proven a gracious winner and she obviously won fair and square. Best of luck to all of our athletes, though if this Davis jerk doesn’t perform well, I would say it could be because he is carrying around a heavy chip on his shoulder, and that will surely slow him down. And now for some other interesting coin toss decisions you may not have heard of (mentalfloss.com): The honor of naming Portland, Oregon was the result of a coin toss in 1835. The “Portland Penny” is on display at the Oregon Historical Society Museum. But winning the coin toss doesn’t always make you a winner. A coin toss between the Wright Brothers determined who would man the very first flight. Wilber won the toss, but failed to get the plane flying. Orville got the second chance and was successful! Pictures show Wilber running alongside as his brother took off! Ritchie Valens, the music superstar who died in a plane crash, won the last available seat on the plane in a coin toss. Given the whining and politicking we're seeing, I'd prefer that America bring home no medals at all. Not even a petty grievance. A made-up grievance. As for the gay athletes -- you're there because of your talent, not your gayness. If you insist on making this competition about your sexuality, fine. We'll restrict you to the Gay Games where it does make a difference.
I see his point only in the fact that if he had a clearly better record then he should have been the winner. This is why race/sex/gayness should never be put on the information when being judged. This is progressives wetdream of mudding the water so no one knows the truth and all the truth. When you protect a special group with laws its a promotion of one group above the others which is unconstitutional and just flat wrong!
I'm also getting sick of the interviews with the gay athletes where the interview focuses on their "gayness" rather than on their athletic performance. Oh well - here's some good news.
