Stephen Bannon brought quite the varied résumé to his new gig as CEO of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. At various points, Bannon has worked as an investment banker, earned money off Seinfeld royalties, overseen a biosphere, directed films, and run an alt-right news site. But one of the stranger blips on his career path came in the mid-aughts, when Bannon joined and eventually ran a company that made its name and fortune as an online marketplace to sell virtual gold to World of Warcraft players and other online gamers.

I think tokens in games will be worth more then bitcoin. They are more then just plain ordinary bitcoins. They have cute graphics and functions with them. Making them more useful then bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. For example you could add +3 damage to a magic sword or get special powers fireballs which are really powerful and do a lot of damage. You could buy a little house and decorate it. So if they can make artifacts a little bit more rare then bitcoin. Then get a bunch of people playing the game. It will take over the world. Just think. All we have to do is play a game sit on our asses and get rich. That's even better than socialism.

Trump’s Campaign CEO’s Little Known World of Warcraft Career

Before he became CEO of the Donald Trump campaign, and before he took over the alt-right media outlet Breitbart, Steve Bannon made his living selling virtual gold on the Internet.

Today, an article in Mother Jones reminded us that back in 2008 we here at WIRED wrote about it. The story focuses on the World of Warcraft marketplace called Internet Gaming Entertainment, where players could pay real money for virtual goods, like gold, in the game. The company was founded by former child star Brock Pierce, and Bannon was an investor. Bannon managed to convince Goldman Sachs to plow $60 million into a company that sold imaginary goods in an imaginary world.

Surely there’s a metaphor in there somewhere.

Here’s a bit of the original article:

Goldman Sachs started making visits, inspecting the Asian operations and talking with Bannon and others about terms. Finally, on February 7, 2006, the deal was inked: Goldman Sachs, together with a consortium of private funds, made a reported $60 million investment in the company. Part of the money was used to buy Pierce, Salyer, and IGE’s general counsel, Randy Maslow, out of some of their stock in the company. Pierce walked away with $20 million and still retained the controlling share of a company that was doing more than a quarter of a billion dollars in sales a year.

In 2007, following a major lawsuit by one World of Warcraft player, who accused IGE of “substantially impairing” players’ enjoyment of the game, the company took a nosedive. It rebranded to Affinity Media, and Bannon took over as CEO. He stayed in that role until 2012, when he joined Breitbart, which, coincidentally, also peddles imaginary stuff on the Internet.

You should go read the whole story.

You are obviously making a point in a facetious manner, but I think I do remember this sort of thing happening with at least the "Second Life" online game. I don't know if that's still running or not. Never tried it. I do remember some talk about the IRS wanting to tax the sales of online game property, whether real or personal. Some of it was indeed going for tidy sums.

It's of course nothing I'd do but entertainment does have it's expenses. Some people pay thousands of bucks to go see 20 some odd guys fight over a pointy ball for a couple hours. I wouldn't do that either.

I'd respond to this by saying, hey, the marketplace is what it is. You can call it crazy and that's valid, but the market doesn't mind being called that. It will do what it will do, and that means it will always do things that some people think are crazy, and everyone will call it crazy from time to time. But just because it's crazy to you doesn't mean the market is wrong. And the market is presently saying that crypto currency is worth something.

But we'll see. Maybe cryptos will crash as you and Gatlin predict. Or maybe it will flourish as I predict. Time will tell.
