The Bulgarian Socialist Party has criticized the intentions of the ruling party GERB and the nationalists from Ataka to organize a referendum over the broadcasting of Turkish-language news on the national TV channel BNT 1. The Socialists reacted to Tuesdays statement of Prime Minister Borisov in which he supported the idea of the Ataka party leader Volen Siderov for holding a referendum.
The ruling majority can stop the Turkish-language news without a referendum. By declaring his support for the initiative yesterday, the Prime Minister actually opened Siderovs election campaign for President in 2011, Socialist Party MP Kiril Dobrev said Wednesday.
We are not huge fans of the Turkish language news, we dont follow them regularly but today this issue is not on the agenda, social issues are more important, Dobrev stated.
Socialist MP Anton Kutev slammed the government for preparing to waste BGN 20 M on a needless referendum. He said it would be better if these funds were distributed to the pensioners in the country.
