Title: Unemployment In Detroit Pushing 50%?

Nearly one out of two workers in Detroit are unemployed, according to a report by The Detroit News. It's a figure far higher than the government's official figure, which is still close to a staggering 30 percent.

But the newspaper says that rate doesn't take everything into account. For every person who is still looking and collecting unemployment, there are scores of others who have had benefits run out, accepted a part-time position, taken early retirement or a job outside of their regular field.

Here's how the paper arrived at it's assessment:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that for the year that ended in September, Michigan's official unemployment rate was 12.6 percent. Using the broadest definition of unemployment, the state unemployment rate was 20.9 percent, or 66 percent higher than the official rate. Since Detroit's official rate for October was 27 percent, that broader rate pushes the city's rate to as high as 44.8 percent.

The report says at least 100,000 in the city have given up the job search all together. Think about that number for a second. There is a small population-within-a-population that has just given up. The job market is so bad in Detroit that this group is betting it's better to just throw in the towel than continue to be silently mocked by their job search.

Also, if you tell the unemployment office you stopped looking for a job more than a year ago you're not counted in the official tally.

Detroit has been the poster child city for how quickly a city can spiral downward in an economic decline. Scores of major car making plants have been shut down, leaving thousands of workers in the dust. Then, you have suppliers shutting down who once made a living producing parts for the factories. Finally, with no employees working nearby, restaurants close up shop because nobody's stopping in for a breakfast, lunch or dinner. Mix all of that in with the stagnant real estate market and it's a recipe for disaster.

Even the city's mayor - Dave Bing - agrees with the more realistic assessment. At the recent White House Job Summit he pegged the city's unemployment rate as "closer to 50 percent." He is urging the government to start sending money Detroit's way so it can be used for city clean-up projects and infrastructure development that will put some people to work.

There is no way around it,this is criminal, and the people responsible for this crime are the union bosses and the corrupt CEO's and politicians that send jobs offshore and to Mexico.

No wonder there are so many Mosque's and Muslims in Detroit. The blacks there pretty much hate whites anyhow, and the Wahabbi's have the oil money coming in from Saudi Arabia to feed, clothe, and provide goods and services for the people as a recruitment tool.

Just wait until the unemployment payouts end and anarchy and riots start. It's inevitable. Too many people out of work and with nothing to do but sit around and get mad because they can't see any hope or end to the situation because everybody they see is in the same boat.

I just hope they are smart enough once they start rioting to go after the black politicians and preachers that sold them down the river, and then take off after the white politicians and CEO's that are just as guilty. Subscribe to *Crime and Corruption*

Thank you free trade and white flight!

White Flight had nothing to do with it.If anything, they just got out early while the getting out was easy.

How do you figure? You lost the tax base with white flight. Social services are a wreck in Detroit.

It's easy to figure. No jobs are no jobs, regardless of who is living there or what race they are.

White Flight didn't kill the auto market.

White Flight didn't create the loss of all the manufacturing that USED to be done in Detroit that is now done in Mexico and other foreign countries.

Detroit could be 100% white right now and the unemployment rate would still be 50 percent because there are no jobs for the people to work.

Free trade killed the auto market. But let's face facts, it wasn't just autoworkers that left. Rising crime, rising taxes, urban decay, reached former predominantly white middle class neighborhoods as a predominantly African American population moved in, taking advantage of decreasing property values. Whites moved to suburbs and the ends of the bigs cities to get away from the three things I mentioned above. They moved as those problems moved to them. I will agree, free trade was the primary factor. but free trade indirectly caused white flight which is part of the current predicament.

You can place the blame on a policy, but US citizens chose to support foreign manufacturers and cheap imports while at the same time demanding higher wages. We, as consumers and workers, can't have it both ways.

They didn't have a choice. Their manufacturing jobs had been sent overseas, so either they became unemployed or went into less lucrative work in the service industry. So there was really no choice, they could only afford cheaper foreign goods. This essentially created a cycle where either American manufacturers either stayed in America and had to raise prices to compensate for the fact long standing trade barriers had been lifted or if you were a larger unpatriotic multinational you moved to the third world. There to paid worker pennies and were able to sell goods for next to nothing.

I agree, it is impossible to have a society with high paying manufacturing jobs if you are going to eliminate trade barriers. Trade barriers protected the manufacturing jobs and those high wages.

We are paying a high price for free trade. Tens of millions of manufacturing jobs have been lost, the trade deficit, the public debt, and private consumer debt are all at record highs. Real wages have actually decreased since 1973 when we started opening up trade with China.

Bull Fookin Shit! No one was forced to buy Japanese manufactured electronics and vehicles. They just didn't want to pay for American manufactured products made by US citizen workers. I witnessed the demise of Kodak, American Motors, Bell and Howell, Admiral, Curtis Mathes, Packard and Studebaker, to name but a few.

The cheaper goods preceeded the movement of manufacturing to foreign countries. Greed came back to bite the American consumer in the ass.

That is simply not true, cheap goods were a result of the elimination of economic trade barriers. American companies went multinational and were able to pay third worlders pennies on the dollar and thus able to charge extremely low prices to American consumers.

Bull FOOKIN Shit! Americans weren't forced to buy cheap imported junk. They did it of their own volition thereby killing the goose that laid the golden egg. My parents wouldn't buy anything manufactured outside of the US.

I don't have to, the proof is in the pudding. The point is, was and always shall be, Americans welcomed, purchased and demanded cheap imported crap. No company can sell a product that consumers refuse to purchase.

Which means they weren't forced to buy it. Buying it was their first choice. To quote Sluggo,"We has met the enemy, and they is us!"

That was and is my point. The greedy American consumer chose to buy cheap. I witnessed it and so did you. I quit wearing blue jeans when the makers decided to import. I bought Carhartts and Filson, but I see now that even those two US stalwarts are importing more of their clothing. I guess I'll have to wear a homemade kilt constructed from my stash of US made Pendleton blankets.
