Title: GOP Insiders Whine: Stephen Miller Drives a Hard Immigration Bargain

Miller is one of the last men standing in the White House. And so it's time for the GOP establishment to play its favorite game, "If only it wasn't for Stephen Miller."
Here’s one thing even Republicans negotiating an immigration deal agree on: Trump aide Stephen Miller is hurting their chances of getting anything done.

"Even Republicans".

You know, even the Republicans who want nothing more than full and total amnesty. The Gang of 8 gang. Even they. Even.

They blame him for insisting the administration gets approval for an unrealistic number of immigration policies in exchange for protections for young people brought into the country illegally as children.

In short, he's trying to get the best deal possible. While they want a fake deal that gives the left everything in exchange for some meaningless "protections" that will never be implemented and some more border funding.

At least until a Fed judge decides that having a border is illegal because it prevents MS-13 members from enrolling at UCLA.

They loathe his intensity when delivering his hardline views.

It's America they really loathe. I'm sorry, was that too intense?

And they accuse him of coordinating with outside advocacy groups that oppose their efforts.

And they're not coordinating with outside groups. Nope. And there's no gambling at Rick's.

“It's no secret that he’s an obstacle to getting anything done on immigration,” said a Republican House member involved in the immigration talks.

Let's rephrase that.

"It's no secret that he's an obstacle to selling out the country."

The House Republican lawmaker said it’s widely viewed that “to move past the speed bumps, there’s no option but to kind of get him out of the way.”

Will no one rid me of this meddlesome patriot.

Yet Miller’s close relationship to the president, which spans the campaign and transition, means they are unlikely to do or say anything to get him out of the negotiations.

Except leak hit pieces to the media. Like this one.

Some Republicans say Miller has tried to poison the deal with policies he knows will never survive a vote in the Senate, where Republicans hold a slim majority and are constantly searching for Democratic votes. “He’s trying to craft a deal he knows is not viable because he doesn’t want a deal,” said a Republican strategist who has long sought an immigration overhaul.

I like how all these quotes come from anonymous "Republicans." Yes, I put the quotation marks in the right place.

In the fall, Miller helped draft a wish list of immigration policies that the administration had to have in exchange for Dreamer protections, including eliminating protections for unaccompanied children who are in the country illegally; restricting eligibility for asylum, humanitarian parole and abused or abandoned foreign children and hiring thousands more immigration officers, prosecutors and judges. Miller had a hand in writing the list but the Department of Homeland Security actually derived the list of priorities based on their needs, according to the White House.

“Stephen is unfairly trying to sabotage this,” said a former DHS official for President George W. Bush who is in contact with Republican staffers in the Senate.

A former Bush official. Well now I'm convinced.

Many on Capitol Hill remember how Miller, then an aide to Sen. Jeff Sessions, an Alabama Republican who led the opposition to the deal, worked in 2013 to kill a bipartisan immigration deal in the Senate that would have allowed immigrants in the country illegally to gain legal status and eventually citizenship.

“Look what happened last time,” said a second former Trump adviser, who worked with Miller and is in close contact with the White House. “He almost single handily blew (the bill) up. They are having flashbacks.”

So are we. To 1986. The last time the amnesty gang got its wish.

Most Republicans are uncomfortable with the Republican aides and their discomfort with the views of their base. That's how they got Trump.

Poster Comment:

This deal all hangs on Miller and Trump's relationship with him and Sessions. On the other side, Javanka and their Gang of 8 allies.

You can bet they are investigating Miller back to the crib, trying to find anything to get him out of the White Hut.

There's a lot of whining about what a bad ass this Miller guy is, and a whole lot of anonymous quote fluff.

I hate that they start off by just caving in and granting amnesty to the DACA illegals. If they won't enforce the existing law, why should we believe that they'll enforce whatever they pass? So far President Trump has proven himself to be about as weak on immigration enforcement, as Obama and Bush. Catch & Release. The official deportation numbers are DOWN.

Some proposed items that are being considered:

1) Reduction in Chain Migration - Minor children of the DACA's, and once the DACA's become US citizens (eligible at 21?) their parents. Splits the kids who are minors in the USA, from their siblings who are supposed to be back in their home country (but in reality are probably already here, and won't be deported). Parents who choose to come to the USA are also split from the rest of the family back there.

2) E-Verify to make employers do the Presidents job for him, because he's too afraid to take the heat for doing so. I'm not a big fan of this universal Mark of the Beast identification scam. The government already knows who the illegal aliens are from the many gov programs and services that they're taking advantage of. Papers Please!

3) End the Visa Lottery - JUST DO IT!

4) Border Security and the Wall

Screw all the people around the world who think that they're living in a shithole, and need to come to the USA for "Political Refuge". Fix it yourself, overthrow the assclowns or whatever, PISS OFF!

This is the real ACT OF LOVE plan, if DACA amnesty is eliminated.

Not being considered, but should be at the top of the list is cutting off non-citizen gov cheese and the many other freebie enticements to invade the USA and make yourselfs at home.

I think you're singing and dancing the anti-Trump chorus line number a bit prematurely.

We'll see how it turns out. The debt ceiling is waiting and the Dims will try to use their media arm to blackmail Trump and bloody the GOP again to stack the deck with free media attacks on the GOP (far more than on Trump himself who won't be on the 2018 ballot). There are multiple elements in play here on a field where many elements are stacked against Trump and the GOP's razor-thin majority in the Senate. The Chamber and its quislings like Grahamnesty and Flake intend to make this difficult. And the Stain just won't die and go away so we should expect that fat lady to sing again.

On top of that, many of the practices you are railing against are not Trump's fault and he can't just get rid of them so easily. Like 0dingaCare, much of it is in statutory law and you can't change those without 60 votes in the Senate. Trump could have ended DACA in the fall but chose to use it as a bargaining chip. We have yet to see if/when the Dems will go all the way, shut down the government over the DACA invaders, drive the stock market down 10%, national parks and monuments closed for weeks, Trump ratcheting up ICE raids on employers, etc. It could be and perhaps is likely to be a major showdown on a range of issues like budget, infrastructure, immigration. Trump is obviously trying to maneuver for big wins. Lady Lindsey and Flake and the Stain will try to undercut him as will many courts, led by the Ninth Circus.

Miller is the foremost anti-amnesty guy left at the WH. But John Kelly has made some moves in this area on his own that indicates that he is very similar to Miller, at least until Trump orders otherwise.

You can. The filibuster is optional, and the Senate majority can end it anytime they want to. They don't want to, because they don't want to give Trump and the people what we won when we voted for him. They want to maintain old-line Establishment Republican politics and ideas, suffocate populism, and defeat the Democrats.

They can't win that game, though. The pressure on too many families is too great now. The populists are suffering economically, in broad swathes, which is why they voted for Trump.

The only thing they can do is what worked in the days of Reagan: throw money at the public to get a bubble and make them feel they are doing better. This means cutting taxes, blowing up the deficit and printing money to cover it. Reagan did it. both Bushes did it. Clinton did it. Obama did it. Trump didn't want to do it that way, but he accepted it, because it was the only way to get the Republican Congress to go along.

With the Border, though, the illegals are either allowed to cross or not. You can't hide this year's legerdemain in the economic bust that comes 8 years hence. They can try to obscure an open border with "Well, Trump reduced illegal crossing by 80% anyway, but that's only true if the statistics are true - and politicians are known to manipulate numbers to get the outcome they want.

If now, with Trump and Miller and control, the business roundtable cannot be defeated and a Wall get funded, it will never happen at all and the country is lost.
