There were plenty of overdose deaths back then. There were a few towns in my area that still had a reputation for having been full of addicts back in the day. My parents told me about them. Not just Coke drinkers but Bayer heroin, laudanum, etc. All of it outlawed around the time of WW I. But my grandparents could recall it.
