Title: Trump administration shuts down $13 billion Obama-era Amtrak plan (Happy New Year, Willie!)

The Trump administration has shut down a $13 billion federal spending plan to rebuild an Amtrak project between New York and New Jersey.

According to a letter obtained by Crain’s New York Business, the administration called the deal proposed by former President Barack Obama — which would have been half paid for by the federal government — “non-existent.”

“Your letter also references a non-existent '50/50' agreement between [the Department of Transportation], New York, and New Jersey. There is no such agreement," wrote Federal Transit Administration deputy administrator K. Jane Williams in a Friday letter. “We consider it unhelpful to reference a non-existent 'agreement' rather than directly address the responsibility for funding a local project where nine out of 10 passengers are local transit riders.”

The Obama administration had agreed with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to split the project’s costs 50-50.

The Department of Transportation, which encompasses the Federal Transit Administration, had agreed to the deal with Christie, Cuomo, now-Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer and New Jersey Sen. Corey Booker in 2015.

The project would have built an Amtrak tunnel connecting New Jersey to Penn Station in New York City. The current single tunnel that sees roughly 600,000 commuters in a single day is known to be deteriorating.

Gateway, the development corporation formed to carry out the project, called the Trump administration’s letter “posturing.”

"There is no more urgent infrastructure project than Gateway, and posturing aside, we are confident that the Trump administration will engage with us as the president turns to infrastructure in 2018," the agency spokesman said in a statement.

President Trump and other administration officials have said infrastructure can and should be bipartisan, and he is expected to release a $1 billion plan in January.

Following an Amtrak derailment in Washington state that left at least three people dead and 100 more injured, Trump said a soon-to-be introduced infrastructure plan “must be approved quickly.”

"The train accident that just occurred in DuPont, WA shows more than ever why our soon to be submitted infrastructure plan must be approved quickly," Trump tweeted on Dec. 18. "Seven trillion dollars spent in the Middle East while our roads, bridges, tunnels, railways (and more) crumble! Not for long!"

It's dead, Jim. :-(

Another of 0bama's boondoggle is cancelled by Trump. As are many of his Hopey/Changey socialist projects.

Instead of replacing the existing Amtrak because the ashtrays are full in these pimp-mobiles, JUST FIX THEM!

Never heard of it. More federal spending that would have been approved/covered- up by a Hillary administration.

Never heard of it.

I live in the state and didn't know.

You're right -- a bunch of eventual out of control spending was on the table for Hitlery to shove through as the football was presumed to have been handed over to the Shrew. Both hidden and above ground. Trump spoiled the next step in the Socialist/NWO evolution. We've been granted a temporary reprieve.

Use the money to build a thirty foot high steel reinforced concrete wall with sniper turrets every quarter mile along our Southern border.

A lot cheaper that the cost of putting up with another 20,000,000 non evolved primitives shouting reconquista. It's essentially the same cost as an interstate highway turned on its side.

There could well be several ravines that are not visible in a 1/4 mile stretch. Better to have towers further back as well as sensors. Piezoelectric sensors are currently being used in select locations.

I like the new kind where the steel square posts are corner out, so you can see what's coming, even from an angle. The drawback is cutting torches can take it down quick.

In the old runway mat wall, we found sections where the welds had been cut and smeared with muck to hide the burn marks, and all it would take to bring it down would be a good push from the other side.

A better solution than a wall is, cut off the "free" welfare, foodstamps, houses, schools, health care, cheese, etc. and deport all the illegal aliens on those lists. Not going to happen with our corrupt political system. Trump is trying to trade DACA amnesty for a border wall in negotiations with congress. Fact is, congress needs to do nothing, and President Trump needs to do his job and deport the DACA illegal aliens, along with the rest of them!

Deporting the illegal alien DACA "Dream Students" was never even seriously considered. They're here to stay if the Republican & Democrat party has it's way (and they will), mark my words!

I'm well aware of that. I just said build the Wall. I worked out a complete design for it years ago that is impossible to place at this site. Additionally you must prevent the driving of stolen trucks into it. Such things were all taken into account. It's up to our government and president to execute a design. If my advice is wanted, I'm available.

Use some of it to be a 30 foot high cement and steel wall with sniper turrets every quarter of a mile along the western and southern NY and NJ borders to keep those bastards in there to keep them from infiltrating and poisoning America.

In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

Sure, as long as taxpayers subsidize it. I recall that decades back they reported an average subsidy per rider of $35. It's probably at least double that now.

The buses don't get those subsidies.

We have the best freight rail system in the world. Europe and Asia orient their rail lines toward passenger traffic. It is an economic choice and one that reflects that America has become a country that travels by air or car. And freight is on trucks and rail.

Amtrak operations disrupt freight train operations in the cross-country routes. There is no good reason to maintain this system, considering how much it costs for so few riders. Look at the cross-country trains. They rarely have more than a half-dozen cars behind two locomotives. It's very inefficient. If demand really was greater and you had 10-20 cars, I would find more reason to excuse the wastefulness in the system. It is lack of demand that makes these trains small and disruptive. There is no reason you couldn't have 1000-2000 people on those trains instead of just a few hundred (at most). But the demand just isn't there, even with the huge Amtrak subsidy.

Well, you should keep in mind that we do expand the federal debt steadily to pay for all these things that the taxpayers just don't want to pay for in taxes. So, more debt for your kids/grandkids and a general drag on the economy in general.

Those subsidies probably do others a lot more good than they do for you.

Get over it. Amtrak is just a minor issue in the greather scheme of things, and it does provide a service for everyone in the area it operates.

There is no such critter as a perfect system. There is always going to be give and take. You might have to give in this instance, but I can guarantee you that you are a taker in others.

Want to get mad at something worth ruining your day for, look at the subsidies for shitholes like Detroit, tax breaks for the gazillionaires in Ca that want OTHER people to pay the taxes for their vision of Utopia, the money AA programs cost in in both real money and lost opportunities for qualified people, etc, etc, etc. Just the way the ball bounces in a free country.

And everything is just a "minor issue". You may as well just vote for Dems if that is your real opinion. This is exactly how they talk constantly.

Due to dumbasses like you, we can't cut any of the most wasteful crap ever created by our pandering government. Amtrak, gasohol subsidies, etc.

It's self-defeating. Lame as the Dems are, they don't do this. And this is why they tend to win based on emotional arguments and the GOP loses when it makes good arguments to cut the endless pile of Big Gooberment pork.
