Interesting. In 1913 that $400 million included a navy of 214 ships while today $700 billion includes a navy of 284 ships. In 1913 GDP was $39.1 billion so the military budget would have been just over 1% of GDP, today it would be roughly 3.75% of GDP. Of course a great deal of our defense spending goes to cover for other nations which shirk their own responsibilities, for example the top 6 European members of NATO have a combined GDP almost 10 times that of Russia. Back in 1913 federal spending ws 2.5% of GDP while local was 5% (state was 0.8%). For 2010 the figures were 23% federal versus 11% local, local governments spend more than double as a percentage of GDP what they spent in 1913, while the ratio to federal spending has flipped to being half of what was spent by local governments to more than twice as much. And state governments have gone from less than 1% of GDP to 10%. The trend is clear, that government has been grabbing a larger share of GDP over the past century, and spending at levels of government with less accountability. The people serve the government, and the government is electing a new people who are more reliable in rubber stamping what the government wants at the ballot box. That is $14 Billion in 1913 money. Most of the spending increases are because of devalued currency. The rest of the increase, is that there is no reason to defend the entire world, or fight a major war on 3 different fronts. Most of our Naval forces are obsolete, and will be destroyed in the first week of any real conflict. If we really wanted to project force, and protect the country, a huge submarine fleet and orbital defensive and offensive platforms would be cheaper and more reliable.

Excepting aircraft carriers, any other ship would likely run out of ammo before it could sink 200 WWII ships. Maybe it could flee the rest, but if not, it'd lose.
And a lot of people suffered because of it. My father was born in 1905. He had to quit school in the 3rd grade and go to work as a laborer in a local shipyard after his father died in order to help his mother feed and provide for his 5 brothers and sisters. He was a smart man that could barely read and write because he spent his entire life working every hour he could work to provide for himself and his family. My mother was 8 years old and her sister was 5 years old when both of their parents died in the flu epidemic of 1918,and they had no where to live and no one to provide for or protect them. The local chapter of the KKK put them in the house of a one-legged Civil War veteran who needed help,with the stipulation that he use his pension money to feed,clothe,and send the little girls to school in exchange for them helping him by cooking,cleaning house,and washing clothes. The old man abused the girls,the KKK showed up one Friday Night and "read him the law" about what was going to happen to him if he continued,and they were ok again for a few years,but without options other than marriage. My mother married a WW-1 vet that had been hit with gas during the war,and who had nightmares and drank a BUNCH. She was 13 when she married him,and she married him because the Civil War vet had died and she had nowhere to live. Her sister moved in with them,and was a little luckier. She married my uncle when she was 15 and he was in his early 30's,and they were married until he died in his early 80's. He was a good man that didn't drink,abuse,or neglect her or their children. There were others that were not that fortunate. How much talent and brain power were lost back then because so many poor children were unable to go to school and advance their educations or learn trades? People need to be careful to not let their dogma bite them in their asses. What we NEED to do is rid the welfare and similar rolls of scam artists and illegal aliens. We also need to turn it into a system where healthy people are sent to schools of some sort to learn trades so that welfare is what it was intended to be,a TEMPORARY hand out to people who need help,NOT a career. In the entire history of the world,the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

I'm guessing I wouldn't need that many nuclear-tipped cruise missiles, nuclear- tipped torpedoes and MIRVd surface-to-surface nuclear missiles to do the job. "Baker" was only a 23 kiloton bomb.
Great subject matter... Funny that most of that same original domestic and institutional infrastructure is still in place from over 100 years ago. During the last 20 years or so, gubmint drones have been given outlandish bennies and platinum-plated healthcare up the wazoo -- to say nothing of lucretive retirement pensions (some after only 5 years. ) Most of it underwritten BY THE PRIVATE SECTOR. Who was/does much of that hiring? LIBERAL DEMOCRATS. No wonder a large majority of the 24% of ALL US employees are mostly loyal registered Democrats. In conclusion, thanks to giving the keys to America's car to International Bankster Inc, the never-ending ever-escalating taxation/theft and over-officiousness at the Feral level (then State and Local) was justified by claiming, "MORE taxes are needed to help keep you safe." (Later on, the mantra became: "It's-for-the-Children.") OR..."Just because we can, and besides -- Congressman/Councilman Mack-Daddy needs a new lakefront home.") Now with the Elites planning on doing away with physical paper/coinage currencies altogether (in lieu of a cyber-created and controlled and eventual One-World "currency"), the wholesale theft of the world's Middle Class Private Sector will be siphoned straight into the Kleptocratic Bankster-Gubmint Machination maw. But...but...at least we still have a free internet, free-speech beacons like Twitter and Facebook, and free and honest "news" reporting. And long live NPR/PBS!! Pfft.
Maybe, but Russia, not having the extraordinary budget of the US, has economized on military development resulting in their superior S-400/500 anti aircaft systems. Doubtless they have similar anti-ship development as well. I think they have a torpedo capable of 200 MPH speeds. The future of war is in these anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles because they are and will be far cheaper than the vessels they will target. Ranges will be increased as well, so a few hundred launched en masse will be sufficient to decimate an entire US Naval task force in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. The US military hasn't figured that out yet, choosing antiquated pride of traditional military might over the reality of improving military technology.
That post is a keeper. If you wrote a book, I'd buy it in a minute. Amazing history. Great recall and observations, complete with links to "old school Americana" --- the one that may have a few blemishes, but is stone cold real. Stuff like this, those REAL struggles back when, is hardly ever told. That generation -- in which ever part of this country they lived -- had to endure some very different, tough times. They just sucked it up and kept going without complaining. Now if you were "re-educated" today, you'd be told to consider yourself one of the biggest "victims" on the planet. (And most university "teachers" and attorneys would agree ;-) I wish you were younger and I was younger. I'd help you document and submit just merely bits and pieces of your life experiences, past historical stories and observations to a publisher. It'd make for a heckuva fascinating book. AND movie... Your only problem might be that the book would be a thousand pages long. Oh well -- you'd have to write two or three books. And work out a movie franchise. ;-)

Most modern US navy ships are not equipped with nukes. Probably only carriers and ballistic missile subs, and carriers only for aircraft delivery, of course. As for only one being required, as Sneaky said, a direct hit from a single 15" shell from a WWII battleship would end game over for any smaller modern ship. It wouldn't surprise me if modern vessels are much more complex than the WWII counterparts, and would therefore less able to survive the same amount of damage. That's the way of tech. Modern war craft are designed more to avoid getting hit than they are to survive a hit.
Very good post Pete. We have too, too many people drawing from programs, that should not be drawing. They should be working. Those programs just make them dependent, and worthless. Now, I do understand there are a few people that are incapable of being productive and capable to provide for themselves. Fine, lets help them. But the majority on those programs are bums. We also need to develop industry here in the US to provide jobs, and keep our nation strong. And we need to discourage companies from leaving the US, and taking those jobs overseas. I would have to believe that any of those missiles could be equipped with a nuclear warhead.
