I think I was around 8 when I made black powder. I had been reading the "Last of the Mohicians" series and got to wondering where they got their black powder from so went to the library, did a little research, and then off to the local drug store.
My parents weren't amused when it went off and cracked the sidewalk in front of our house. That was the end of my black powder days, and I moved on to making a 22 caliber zip gun to go with my switchblade and steel knuckles. The steel knucks were my grandfathers. The only thing I had of his.
Near the end of WWll , my father worked at the New Brighton Arms plant, and brought home some .30 carbine ammo. Naturally, I thought it would make a great zip gun.
Lucky for me, the old man sabotaged my effort before I blew off a finger, at best..

Yeah, you owe him BIG for that one, although there are are pipes made that are strong enough to hold the pressures if you could figure some way to make the chamber.
Yeah,we could both do it today if we really wanted, but we ain't kids anymore, and I even used to be a gunsmith. Besides, shotguns are so much easier to make at home, and no real worries over chamber pressures.
