Badlands -- Bruce Springsteen I can't stand that asshole these days. I don't know when he became a card carrying leftist turd, but he did. However he had 2 great albums in the late 70s/early 80s about life in middle America. This is is one of the better rock songs ever. It was released as a single, but never cracked the top 40. WOLD -- Harry Chapin By all accounts, Harry Chapin was a good man. I have no idea what his political or religious beliefs were but I think he honestly wanted to help others. His biggest hit was "Cats in the Cradle," which is okay if you like that kind of maudlin crap. He also had the hit "Taxi," and that was also okay, although I wasn't impressed by the reference to drug use. WOLD was a wonderful song. It told the story of a man who wanted to get involved in the radio business, and after many years found it wasn't what he might have expected. London Town -- Paul McCartney Most of the stuff Paul McCartney recorded after leaving the Beatles was garbage. I mean they did quite well on the charts, but they were still garbage. This was his best other than "My Brave Face."

Born in the the USA was when it first became obvious to me what a dick this guy is. I can't believe anyone would think this was a pro-USA song.
I put that song right up there with MacArthur Park and It's a Small World. When you find my body with a gun in my hand, one of those three songs will be playing in the background.
C'mon, it's a harmless little ditty. You can't compare it to the suicide-inducing It's A Small World.
How about Meat Loaf? This was one of the great albums of the era, back when albums were considered important. Now everything seems to be about singles bought off iTunes.

Mel Carter's version from '65 is probably the best dance ballad ever written.. -- Hard to beat for getting the ladies in the mood.
You've been giving this some thought. I liked this Paradise song because of the classic riffs and lead-ins, the combination of elements, and mostly because it told a wry story of teen romance gone sour. And Meat Loaf is very funny to watch in this vid. So it is an operatic ditty. And it does sound a little too much like a Broadway show tune, almost like a Sondheim song. The arranger's musical temperament does show. But it is a story-like rock song which seems increasingly rare. We just don't have very many narrative songs any more.

In my estimation Macarthur Park, which was a actually a corroberative effort by Jimmy Webb and Richard Harris was the finest love song ever done. Nobody but Webb could have written it as an expression of the disappointment he was going through and nobody else but Harris could have performed it adaquately. It was essentially both psychoanalytic and and an IQ test. Many people of concrete ideation hated it because they thought is was only about sweet green cake icing. Others were captivated with it as it symbolized their own experience perfectly. The second greatest song was Classical Gas. It was a guitar masterpiece.
My wife was a bit crazy about MacArthur Park. I played it at her funeral a few years ago...
I liked the instrumental hits from the classic era, even Herb Alpert who had a surprising following.

Mmmm. This would probably have to go on my "other list." To each, his own I guess. It was hardly an ignored song. It was a smash hit in the US and other countries. Since it's been almost 50 years since its release, it is understandable why nobody hears about it now. It had music that ranged from over-orchestrated to absurdly over-orchestrated. Comparing a lost love to a cake in the rain? Uhhhh, okay. I would have to give this song an A for originality, and an A for WTF?

You say that was the song that got their careers going? WHY? The Pointer Sisters had much success even before they recorded that song, going back at least 10 years before it was even released. At 8.5 minutes long it didn't really fit the format of pop music stations who rarely went 8.5 minutes without an ad break.
They tried to get it as a track in a cheesy retro movie but it ended up as a huge hit. And they wrote it in less than 2 hours, including taking a break while "someone [tried] to steal [my] brand-new Chevrolet". It's a stream of consciousness, shoot-the-moon kind of story. I like those kind of stories.
If you saw the movie, you heard the song. It played throughout the semi truck chase scene. In the video I posted, you can see the truck mangling a lot of other vehicles on a rampage.
I think the first I heard of them was a song from the movie "Car Wash". Before that, they were regional or only known on black radio stations. After that, they kept creeping up on the public but really broke through with Neutron Dance. At least, that is how I recall it. I'm not looking for some mega-debate over the career of the Pointer Sisters. Even I'm not that bored. : ) So they barely made the charts with a #95 hit in 1973. Then nothing until 1979. Then a string of hits that got more popular, with threee Billboard top 100 hits in 1985. And Neutron Dance was their last big Billboard hit in 1985. So we were both a little wrong and a little right. LOL
Many stations that did play it played an abbreviated version of it, including removing the entire baseball scene. To me, that's sort of like serving beef stew without any beef in it.

"Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" is a popular song written by Harry Noble and originally performed by Karen Chandler in 1952. It has been re- recorded several times since then, with the most notable covers being by Mel Carter in 1965 and by Gloria Estefan in 1994.

According to Allee Willis, "Neutron Dance" was written in hopes of being placed on the soundtrack of the film Streets of Fire: "we were told that there was a scene on a bus that was leaving town after there had been this nuclear holocaust, and that a '50s doo-wop black group was going to be at the back of the bus that the lead couple was escaping on ... Danny Sembello and I just met that day ... I was very disinterested in songwriting at that point, and I'm writing with this kid who's never had a record before, and I just wanted to get him in and out. He was a phenomenal keyboard player, and I just said: 'Play the most common sounding old fashioned '50s black music bass line that you can think of.' And he just started doing the [rhythm for "Neutron Dance"]. And I'm someone who could write a melody to a spoon falling on the table. So I literally sang that melody down. First time down, he just kind of followed and went to the right places.
