Badlands -- Bruce Springsteen

I can't stand that asshole these days. I don't know when he became a card carrying leftist turd, but he did. However he had 2 great albums in the late 70s/early 80s about life in middle America. This is is one of the better rock songs ever. It was released as a single, but never cracked the top 40.

WOLD -- Harry Chapin

By all accounts, Harry Chapin was a good man. I have no idea what his political or religious beliefs were but I think he honestly wanted to help others.

His biggest hit was "Cats in the Cradle," which is okay if you like that kind of maudlin crap. He also had the hit "Taxi," and that was also okay, although I wasn't impressed by the reference to drug use.

WOLD was a wonderful song. It told the story of a man who wanted to get involved in the radio business, and after many years found it wasn't what he might have expected.

London Town -- Paul McCartney

Most of the stuff Paul McCartney recorded after leaving the Beatles was garbage. I mean they did quite well on the charts, but they were still garbage. This was his best other than "My Brave Face."

I have about 1600 CDs, all purchased over the years, not copied.

The only one I ever just gave away was "Born in the USA" - from the outset I thought it was just boring as hell.

"Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" is a popular song written by Harry Noble and originally performed by Karen Chandler in 1952. It has been re- recorded several times since then, with the most notable covers being by Mel Carter in 1965 and by Gloria Estefan in 1994.

Mel Carter's version from '65 is probably the best dance ballad ever written.. -- Hard to beat for getting the ladies in the mood.

You've been giving this some thought.

I liked this Paradise song because of the classic riffs and lead-ins, the combination of elements, and mostly because it told a wry story of teen romance gone sour. And Meat Loaf is very funny to watch in this vid. So it is an operatic ditty. And it does sound a little too much like a Broadway show tune, almost like a Sondheim song. The arranger's musical temperament does show. But it is a story-like rock song which seems increasingly rare. We just don't have very many narrative songs any more.

In my estimation Macarthur Park, which was a actually a corroberative effort by Jimmy Webb and Richard Harris was the finest love song ever done. Nobody but Webb could have written it as an expression of the disappointment he was going through and nobody else but Harris could have performed it adaquately. It was essentially both psychoanalytic and and an IQ test. Many people of concrete ideation hated it because they thought is was only about sweet green cake icing. Others were captivated with it as it symbolized their own experience perfectly.

The second greatest song was Classical Gas. It was a guitar masterpiece.

It was the day he got his draft notice during the VN war.

He has been overcompensating for being a punk every sinc,by insisting people call himi "the boss",and justifying his selfishness and cowardice by claiming it was an "unjust war against the yellow man."

BTW,if you want to hear the best song Little Brucie wrote, give a listen to the Pointer Sisters just flat tear this one UP.

Macarthur Park

Mmmm.

This would probably have to go on my "other list."

To each, his own I guess.

It was hardly an ignored song. It was a smash hit in the US and other countries. Since it's been almost 50 years since its release, it is understandable why nobody hears about it now.

It had music that ranged from over-orchestrated to absurdly over-orchestrated. Comparing a lost love to a cake in the rain? Uhhhh, okay.

I would have to give this song an A for originality, and an A for WTF?

BTW,if you want to hear the best song Little Brucie wrote, give a listen to the Pointer Sisters just flat tear this one UP.

They had an odd career, never really made it until their string of pop hits when they were in their forties.

Probably their best-known song was Neutron Dance which had a story of its own.

According to Allee Willis, "Neutron Dance" was written in hopes of being placed on the soundtrack of the film Streets of Fire: "we were told that there was a scene on a bus that was leaving town after there had been this nuclear holocaust, and that a '50s doo-wop black group was going to be at the back of the bus that the lead couple was escaping on ... Danny Sembello and I just met that day ... I was very disinterested in songwriting at that point, and I'm writing with this kid who's never had a record before, and I just wanted to get him in and out. He was a phenomenal keyboard player, and I just said: 'Play the most common sounding old fashioned '50s black music bass line that you can think of.' And he just started doing the [rhythm for "Neutron Dance"]. And I'm someone who could write a melody to a spoon falling on the table. So I literally sang that melody down. First time down, he just kind of followed and went to the right places. And then I said, Let's just write this quick lyric ... we're taking a half an hour on the lyric, and this thing's gonna get done."[1]

Willis adds that the lyric theme of "Neutron Dance" was due to "all this stuff going on in my life: I don't want to take it anymore, I'll just stay here locked behind the door. Just no time to stop and get away, because I work so hard to make it every day. Really a lyric about all these things falling apart in your life, and you know what, just get it together and change your life."[1] According to Willis while working on the lyrics with Sembello she looked through a window and saw someone attempting to break into her car: while running outside to scare off the thief Willis called out to Sembello: "Someone stole my brand new Chevrolet", and the line was included in the song

The success of the song and the movie became inextricably linked. They fed off each other.

"It Only Hurts for a Little While" is a 1956 popular song with music by Fred Spielman and lyrics by Mack David.[1]

The recording by The Ames Brothers was released by RCA Victor Records as catalog number 20-6481. It first reached the Billboard magazine charts on May 19, 1956. On the Disk Jockey chart, it peaked at #15; on the Best Seller chart, at #16; on the Juke Box chart, at #11; on the composite chart of the top 100 songs, it reached #15.[2]

Politically incorrect, but a great song....

I heard the song in the movie "Beverly Hills Cop". Never heard of "Streets of Fire.

They tried to get it as a track in a cheesy retro movie but it ended up as a huge hit.

And they wrote it in less than 2 hours, including taking a break while "someone [tried] to steal [my] brand-new Chevrolet". It's a stream of consciousness, shoot-the-moon kind of story.

I like those kind of stories.

The Pointer Sisters had much success even before they recorded that song, going back at least 10 years before it was even released.

I think the first I heard of them was a song from the movie "Car Wash". Before that, they were regional or only known on black radio stations. After that, they kept creeping up on the public but really broke through with Neutron Dance. At least, that is how I recall it.

I'm not looking for some mega-debate over the career of the Pointer Sisters. Even I'm not that bored.     : )

I guess I am that bored. So I checked against my 5500+ song Billboard collection.

./1973_Billboard_Top_Usa_Singles/95-Pointer_Sisters-Yes_We_Can_Can.mp3
./1979_Billboard_Top_Usa_Singles/15-Pointer_Sisters-Fire.mp3

./1984_BillBoard_Top_USA_Singles/48-Pointer_Sisters-Automatic.mp3
./1985_BillBoard_Top_USA_Singles/38-Pointer_Sisters-Neutron_Dance.mp3

So they barely made the charts with a #95 hit in 1973. Then nothing until 1979. Then a string of hits that got more popular, with threee Billboard top 100 hits in 1985. And Neutron Dance was their last big Billboard hit in 1985.

So we were both a little wrong and a little right. LOL

I had to check because Alpert did have a long career. Per Billboard:

./1968_Billboard_Top_Usa_Singles/07-Herb_Alpert-This_Guys_In_Love_With_You.mp3

So Alpert had a #79 hit of the Billboard 100 back in 1987. So it's old but it's not exactly the Big Band era.

But the Big Band era wasn't truly dead even in the Sixties. So there was room in the market for Herb Alpert for some years. And I assume he was able to play resorts and regional concerts into the Nineties.

Wiki

Alpert's musical accomplishments include five No. 1 albums and 28 albums total on the Billboard Album chart, nine Grammy Awards, fourteen platinum albums, and fifteen gold albums. Alpert has sold 72 million records worldwide. Alpert is the only recording artist to hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop chart as both a vocalist ("This Guy's in Love with You", 1968), and an instrumentalist ("Rise", 1979).

I forgot about his vocal single in '68. The year after the Summer of Love, burning down major cities like Detroit...

He was a mediocre singer with a limited range (like Fred Astaire) but the song was a good pop song, acceptable enough to bridge the teens and their parents as well.

Don't forget it was the era of the big weekly variety shows like Hollywood Palace and Sid Caesar and Ed Sullivan. I barely recall these myself but they were huge venues for established acts going back to the vaudeville era and the Borscht Belt with some young rock and pop bands tossed in for the young people.

And American Bandstand was huge. Check this out. That was some mindbending stuff back in the Sixties, still hung over from the heavily sedated Fifties of Ozzie and Harriet and Lawrence Welk.

And then a couple of years ago I heard Melody Gardot for the first time, and had a "Eureka Moment",and said to myself,"DAYUM! So THAT'S what all those other people were trying to do!"

I believe the band is original -- except for the drummer. The bass player posted the vid onto YT. They must have been really young when they did that ditty.

Guitarist's riff is still iconic. hey were a "One Hit Wonder," but what a hit. And an odd thing about the vocals -- it's not actually singing; It's more of an early white punk garage-band rap.

You might try to check your political bigotry at the door...

As in, "Self-censor your opinions that liberal-Marxists are millionaire hypocrites?"??

When Springsteen shuts the h*ll up about injecting his own "political bigotry" into his shows, you *might* have a fair point.

Do you think it's fair to pay $100+ per ticket to listen to The Boss stop singing to shove his Leftist opinions down his audience's throat? Fair to rail on abut Climate Change, voting against Republicans, "gun-control," or promoting progressive Marxism as his limo is parked outside the Arena and he returns home to his mansion, serviced by a small army of illegals and armed guards?

It was the same way with George Carlin. I always thought he was uniquely funny. I went to a concert of his in the early 90s. He had some funny lines, but then went into a long rant against conservatives and capitalism. Sorry George, but you just made my unlistenable list.

I agree -- "Darkness" and "The River were both excellent albums.

I found even "Born In The USA" to be a good album (I did hate 'Born In The USA' single.) It wasn't nearly as good as either Darkness' or 'The River', but by that time Springsteen had already done four great albums ('Born To Run' and 'Wild Innocent and E Street Shuffle'.)

From that 'Born In The USA' album:

My Hometown
I'm On Fire
Glory Days
Cover Me
Dancing In The Dark

Everything AFTER that album IMO is bad. Except for one stand out track, 'Brilliant Disguise'.

Music is like food, isn't it? Taste and mood are relative up to individuals. To a point.

Rap is universally CRAP and not even "music." Pop music during the last 20 or so years has been controlled by Dark Forces.
