At least 20 feared dead in mass shooting at Texas church

By Nicole Darrah

Published November 05, 2017 FoxNews.com At least 20 people are feared dead in Texas after a gunman opened fire at a church outside San Antonio on Sunday, Fox News has learned.

The mass shooting was reported at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, which is about 30 miles southeast of San Antonio. The gunman has been fatally shot by police.

Wilson County Commissioner Larry Wiley told Fox News that an emergency responder said between 20 and 24 people are dead, and around 20 were wounded when a man walked into the church about 11:30 a.m. on Sunday and opened fire at the crowd of people.

If the number of people dead is confirmed, Sunday's shooting would be the deadlist in modern U.S. history.

"It is horrible," Wiley said of the massacre, the motive of which is unknown. "It appears someone walked in and started shooting."

The church's pastor, Frank Pomeroy, said his 14-year-old daughter was killing in the shooting, according to ABC News.

Bryan Llenas shares latest information known about Texas church shooting victims.Video Victims transported to hospitals after Texas church shooting "We have accepted a multiple number of patients from the shooting," Megan Posey, a spokeswoman for Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville, 15 miles from church, told Fox News. She said she did not have a specific number. She said doctors were assessing the patients.

Some victims were transported to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, KSAT reported.

Helicopters and emergency personnel were seen arriving at the scene. The FBI is also on scene.

The gunman, according to Wiley, was killed roughly five miles away in Guadalupe County after being cornered by deputies.

"This is horrific for our tiny little tight-knit town," Alena Berlanga, who lives 10 minutes outside of Sutherland Springs told The Associated Press. "Everybody's going to be affected and everybody knows someone who's affected."

President Trump, who's currently traveling in Asia, tweeted: "May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan."

TRUMP, POLITICIANS REACT TO TEXAS CHURCH SHOOTING

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement that "While the details of this horrific act are still under investigation, Cecilia and I want to send our sincerest thoughts and prayers to all those who have been affected by this evil act."

"I want to thank law enforcement for their response and ask that all Texans pray for the Sutherland Springs community during this time of mourning and loss," the statement read.

Sutherland Springs has a population of about 400 residents.

Sunday's shooting comes just over a month after 58 people were killed and hundreds injured on Oct. 1 after a gunman opened fire on a country music festival in Las Vegas.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates. Fox News' Robert Gearty and Jake Gibson contributed to this report.

The shooting suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, CBS News has learned from federal law enforcement sources.

Kelley is a former U.S. Air Force member who served from 2010 to 2014. He was dishonorably discharged and court martialed in May 2014, CBS News has learned.

A law enforcement official confirmed that the gunman is deceased. He was shot after a car chase with police, but it's unclear if he shot himself or if he was shot by police, CBS News' senior investigative producer Pat Milton reports.

On Sunday night, authorities only identified the suspect as a young white male. They said he was seen dressed in all black and tactical gear at a local gas station at 11:20 a.m. He then exited his vehicle, crossed the street and began firing an AR-15 style weapon at the church, officials said. The suspect entered the church and continued to fire.

As he exited the church, a local resident grabbed his gun and pursued the suspect, who dropped his weapon and fled the scene.

"We still don't know much about what happened, other than this guy came in around 11:15 a.m. and started shooting everybody in the church," Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said on CBSN.

Did you check out Drudge trying to sell this guy as a "Bible Study teacher"??

Drudge = Propagandist these days.

Perp was a flaming militant atheist. AND Antifa disciple. The beard may symbolize an alliance with Islam OR recent conversion.

Are you at liberty to share reaction from your church or others?

MY TAKE: There appears to be precious little investigation and public dissemination of info or truth in these recent mass murder cases. EVEN THOUGH we are constantly told that every facet of our lives is under extreme scrutiny.

IS IS BECAUSE THE TARGETS ARE CHRISTIAN? CONSERVATIVES? LIKELY GUN OWNERS?

Informative vid and breakdown. Nothing "kooky."

I've been monitoring several different channels, and who shot the lone gunman is still not established.

IF the MSM reports it, it's by default DISINFO.

When they immediately roll out the "Lone Wolf" photo, one can only assume the opposite. It is very possible that The Perp had help. ONCE AGAIN.

And once again the very LAST place to find THE Truth is at ABC/CNN/NBC/Yahoo...and now, even Drudge is highly suspect.

I heard one report that claims his ex-wife taught Sunday school at the church and his mother in law attended there as well.

That's interesting...

Could it be that the dude sat in and subbed ONE Sunday, hence Drudge (now an official propagandist) characterized him as "Sunday School teacher" -- as though it was inferred that he regularly did so?

I'm still not convinced that he has muslim terrorist ties since he was an adamant atheist.

I hear ya. There's a definite disconnect obviously there.

But since there are stories afloat that some Antifa have collaborated on "training" with radical Muzzie cells, perhaps the beard is a "nod" to them? BOTH have declared open war on the US.

FWIW, one vlogger caught a screen shot of the Antifa Flag at the perp's now scrubbed FB page.

It's curious that this guy who was court-martialed and banned from owning a gun would openly and brazenly post a photo of an AR at his FB page. You'd think he'd be a LOT more careful. UNLESS...

MOREOVER, if the NSA is monitoring ALL of us, shouldn't we expect a guy like this to be monitored extremely closely?? Same of Paddock given his daddy's history.

You mean, of course, how I feel about what I've read about this incident. For all of us, we can only go by the reports.

If true he was a Muslim convert and Antifa member, it seems he may have been inspired by Antifa to engage in violence, and Islam for where to do it. The Vegas shooting probably served as a model and and example for him -- go where there are crowds of people closely packed together. While successful, he chose Texas where lots of people have guns which appears to have been to his ultimate undoing.

He probably crashed his car while escaping because he was losing blood on the way and lost consciousness behind the wheel. Latest reports are he had a hostage with him while escaping who seems was not seriously injured (and fortunately not shot by the pursuing armed civ). That account should be explained a bit.

That's my take.

That an armed civ took this guy down is not good for the gun grabbing establishment, so that would play against any false flag here (not that I'm first to jump on that bandwagon -- far from it).

All in all, I don't yet see any reason for this to be much anything more than has been reported: A lone guy with a violent ideological agenda.

As he left, the shooter was confronted by an armed resident who had grabbed his own rifle and exchanged fire with Kelley.

The armed man who confronted Kelley had help from another local resident, Johnnie Langendorff, who said he was driving past the church as the shooting happened. The armed man asked to get in Langendorff’s truck, and the pair followed as the gunman drove away.

“He jumped in my truck and said, ‘He just shot up the church. We need to go get him.’ And I said ‘Let’s go,’” Langendorff said.

The pursuit reached speeds up to 90 (144 kph) mph. The gunman eventually lost control of his vehicle and crashed. The armed man walked up to the vehicle with his gun drawn, and the attacker did not move. Police arrived about five minutes later, Langendorff said.

The assailant was dead in his vehicle. He had three gunshot wounds — two from where the armed man hit him in the leg and the torso and the third self-inflicted wound to the head, authorities said.

“There was no thinking about it. There was just doing. That was the key to all this. Act now. Ask questions later,” Langendorff said.

Church member Nick Uhlig, 34, who was not at Sunday’s service, told the AP that his pregnant cousin and her in-laws were among those killed. He later told the Houston Chronicle that three of his cousin’s children were also slain.

Three weapons were recovered. A Ruger AR-556 rifle was found at the church, and two handguns were found in the gunman’s vehicle, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

You mean, of course, how I feel about what I've read about this incident. For all of us, we can only go by the reports.

First, thanks for weighing in...

That's where this always gets tricky.

It's essential that we consider independent investigative reports, eyewitness accounts, and aggregate sources....

IF we leave the investigating to the Usual MSM Suspects, we'll never get anywhere.

Good insight. I agree.

At minimum, Kelley WAS inspired and emboldened by the Mandalay shooting Op. The NYC Muzzie mow-down; My fear, our fear is always the "Copycat". How many insane hateful progs are at this very moment plotting and planning? The Prog-Antifa hive mindset is very similar to that of Muzzies.

Yes, isn't it interesting in that although the cowardly punk got away with shooting babies point-black as well as other worshiper, an armed Texan made him pay with his life?

We have to presume nearly every church in Texas will now be armed to the teeth. This slaughter merely hardened the resolve of pro-2A Americans.

I haven't followed up on the account....But yes, it's a minor miracle that one of our heroes was careful and adept enough to take down the perp without him or the crash seriously harming the hostage. I'd heard one of the vigilantes was an NRA instructor.

That an armed civ took this guy down is not good for the gun grabbing establishment, so that would play against any false flag here (not that I'm first to jump on that bandwagon -- far from it).

Again, I agree. Even I am discounting a direct False Flag in this case...

THAT said, a case CAN be made that 0bama's AF and feral officials purposely allowed Kelley and his insane ilk to BUY GUNS. Why? Let's recall the Fast & Furious Op that was designed exactly to do what Kelley did; Shoot up Americans and become a catalyst for an anti-2A crusade (we are already predictably seeing this, especially on the heels of Mandalay.)

The MSM is mostly mum about whose fault it is that Kelley purchased guns to begin with. 0bama and HIS machination.

All in all, I don't yet see any reason for this to be much anything more than has been reported: A lone guy with a violent ideological agenda.

Here I disagree.

The MSM, Dems' Hollywood and Academe's propagandized Campaign-of-Hate against Trump, Republicans, Whites, Straights, Christians, and Conservatives has bore fruit. Rotten fruit.

This "lone guy" is only the tip of the iceberg.

With many 0bama-holdovers/Statists still deeply entrenched within several positions of power, many of us speculate that the country has been booby-trapped. ONE way to do so is...exactly what we've seen -- aiding and abetting the hateful insane to act out AGAINST conservatives.

1) Obsessive Hatred, disrespect and utter contempt of human life

That is a fact. Joining that "HATE FUNDIES!!" cult are Statist-Occultists, Illuminati, and Commies.

How many of them were secretly happy to hear about it and the target? TOO MANY. For years they've been targeting Christians as "oppressive," "intolerant," "homophobic," "Islamophobic," and basically sub-human.

I would bet many progs even held parties to celebrate this slaughter IN a church. They'll also cite this as "proof" that "God doesn't care."

Same of the Mandalay slaughter. Some politicians and many progs couldn't hold back their glee that the probable victims of a Country Music concert were likely...conservatives and Trump voters, if not Christians.

Compare and contrast the MSM-em-Hollywood reaction to the gay Miami Beach club shooting and mass murder.

Terrible, tragic incident. That said, though the PERP was a Muzzie, the MSM and usual liberal suspects did not blame the Muzzie, instead choosing to again blame GUNS...

Oh, and the headlines screeched DAILY for weeks while mourning and sympathies went on for MONTHS. Try to find any Academe or MSM empathy like this over Mandalay or this. We won't precisely because the vast majorities of MSM outlets and their staffs are anti-Christian Progressive-Atheists.

I haven't followed up on the account....But yes, it's a minor miracle that one of our heroes was careful and adept enough to take down the perp without him or the crash seriously harming the hostage. I'd heard one of the vigilantes was an NRA instructor.

I listened to an interview of the guy that engaged the shooter. He gave his full account of what happened, including the police arrival after the crash. There was zero mention of any hostage so it's safe to say that was a false report.

Yes, he was an NRA rifle instructor, and did everything he did while barefoot. He and the assisting driver that pursued him stopped him with no police assist at all. It was just one man with a rifle and a second man with a pickup. The whole event definitely shows the power of what one can do with a rifle, whether for evil or for stopping same.

Only other update: The shooter knew the church and some of the congregation. One of the victims was, in fact, his wife's grandmother. So it may not have been religiously motivated, or only partially so.

You underscored a couple of important observations and points.

You also underscore the REAL reason for "gun control": COMPLETE CONTROL OF CONSERVATIVES (so the elites have a clear path to enslavement and their One World Gubmint, as in Europe.)
