Title: Jeff Flake says he won't run for re-election in 2018

Sen. Jeff Flake abruptly announced Tuesday he won't run for re-election after all in the 2018 midterm elections, leave the Senate when his term ends in January 2019 and delivered a blistering rebuke of President Trump's behavior.

The Arizona Republic announced on the Senate floor that he could "better serve my country and conscience" by dropping his re-election bid, "freeing myself of the political consideration that consumed far too much bandwidth," he said.

Flake issued a thinly-veiled take-down of President Trump, criticizing the "personal attacks," the "threats against principles, freedom and institutions" and "flagrant disregard for truth and decency." He argued that recklessness, outrageous and unhinged behavior have been excused as "telling it like it is, but he warned that when such behavior "emanates from the top of government," he said it's something else.

"It is dangerous to our democracy," Flake said. "Why didn't you speak up? What are we going to say?" he asked rhetorically. "Mr. President, I rise today to say, enough."

"It is clear at this moment that a traditional conservative...has a narrower and narrower path to nomination in the Republican party," Flake admitted on the Senate floor.

Flake said that it is his obligation to be critical and not to be silent.

"Silence can equal complicity," he said. "I will not be complicit or silent."

Flake first revealed his decision in a phone interview with The Arizona Republic Tuesday: "Here's the bottom line: The path that I would have to travel to get the Republican nomination is a path I'm not willing to take, and that I can't in good conscience take."

"It would require me to believe in positions I don't hold on such issues as trade and immigration and it would require me to condone behavior that I cannot condone."

"There may not be a place for a Republican like me in the current Republican climate or the current Republican Party," Flake said.

Flake, 54, had been expected to run for re-election, but has been especially critical of President Trump and the Republican Party over the last several months. The president attacked Flake on Twitter and his former White House chief strategist, Steve Bannon, has said he's backing Kelli Ward, who had launched a primary challenge to Flake. Ward said over the summer that Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, should resign from his seat because of his brain cancer diagnosis.

Flake has served in the Senate since 2013 and previously served in the House from 2003 until 2013. He was on the scene during the June 2017 GOP congressional baseball practice shooting that left Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, wounded.

Poster Comment:

Flake is indeed a Flake. Now Arizonans can elect a truly Conservative senator and hopefully they can get rid of McCain!

Trump has 156 IQ.... higher than Hitlery Clinton 145, higher than Bush 124.. ... Obama's IQ is 102.... how was that Harvard material?

Affirmatively 'bigoted' academia....

The rest deducted from whitey.

21 trillion in debt. This new budget has a deficit of 666 billion! Who did that?

This sounds EXACTLY like all of the crooked, whiny-assed Republicans and Democrats that Sarah Palin battled and beat in Alaska. I think the plug has been pulled and they are swirling the drain.

Even some Never-Trumper types aren't buying Flake's flake-out.

TheRightScoop: Ben Shapiro, Erick Erickson RIP FLAKE TO SHREDS over Trump scapegoating…

This is really interesting – while Jeff Flake is out there saying pretty true things about the age of Trump in the Republican party, he might be exaggerating that they are the reasons he’s not seeking re-election.

Ben Shapiro explains in a scathing twitter thread.

Flake blaming his fall on Trump and the supposed inability of the base to support good people is disingenuous and cynical. (/1)

— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 24, 2017

Flake was deeply unpopular for years and was going to lose. Not because of Trump. Because he broke faith with his base. (2/)

— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 24, 2017

Blaming Trump and Trump voters is a way of playing hero while quitting because he was going to lose. (3/)

— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 24, 2017

The media will eat it up because anyone who badmouths Trump (and I agree with many Flake critiques) becomes a tragic hero. (4/)

— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 24, 2017

Trump is happy to play into that story because it makes him look powerful. Flake wants to play tragic hero. Media love the conflict. (5/)

— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 24, 2017

So, in the end, this is cynical politics, as always, and sheer BS generally. Trump is not the party or the future of conservatism. (6/)

— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 24, 2017

He is the president and a vehicle for the base's anger and desire to stop Democrats. Good people can still be elected. (END)

— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 24, 2017

And then there’s Erick Erickson, who seems to agree with Shapiro’s assessment:
Oh poor Jeff Flake. Jeff Flake got bullied out of Washington by Trumpism. Flake is such a nice guy and there is no room for nice guys in the GOP any more. I am seeing all this all over social media and it is such horse crap.

Jeff Flake is leaving the Senate because he is a crappy politician who built his brand as one thing, used it to get to the Senate, then betrayed that brand once there.

AND….
Flake has the right message about principle and standing for conviction, but Flake has not done that. He is now, with the help of a willing press corps and Republicans who dislike President Trump, trying to claim he is the victim of the President’s wrath and he is standing on principle. If only that were true. Ben Sasse is doing it, without writing a book about it, and has a HAFA score of 94% and a Club for Growth score of 100%.

Both men talk the same talk, but only one of them is really walking the walk. Jeff Flake has the right message. He’s just the wrong messenger because he does not really believe it and is not really living it. So spare me your hot takes and conventional wisdom on Flake.

DAAAAANG!! Savage. And probably correct. Neither Shapiro nor Erickson are Trump water carriers – they have no agenda reason to deride Flake. If anything, as Trump critics themselves, if they were dishonest, they’d just go along with his critiques… and that’s why they’re worth listening to.

I really think that you: "don't get it."

It's you who can't get it, Bucko! The Republican Party is being reshaped in order to end it's repulsive affair with the Democrats (Communists). What Americans have allowed their pansy politicians to do to this nation is northing short of treason.

$21 trillion in debt and a current budget deficit exceeding $666 billion is just evidence of their vulture-like eating of a bloated corpse. Who did it?

Liberals are like Slinkys. They're good for nothing, but somehow they bring a smile to your face as you shove them down the stairs.
