“Sunday Night Football” suffered again in the ratings battle, despite the exciting game Sunday night between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans.

NBC and the National Football League scored a 10.6/18 in metered market households in the match that saw the Chiefs beat the Texans 42-34 at NRG Stadium in Texas, according to Deadline Monday.

That’s a drop of 3 percent over last Sunday night’s match where the Seattle Seahawks beat the Indianapolis Colts 46-18. Those numbers make it the lowest rated game so far in a season, which has seen ratings drop as NFL  players and coaches allow protests during the national anthem.

Last week, “SNF” final numbers saw a 5.8/21 in the key demographic of ages 18-49 and 16.73 million viewers, which was down over the week prior.

In comparison, a year ago at the same time the Sunday night game on October 9, 2016, netted a ratings of just four percent higher in metered market households and a 5.9/16 in the coveted demographic with 16.62 million viewers. That game that was up against a highly anticipated presidential town hall debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in a week that the infamous “Access Hollywood” clip of Billy Bush and Trump speaking candidly about women came out.

So, MORE people watched the game this year than last year. How is that "down"?

No, it is saying that the game a year ago had 4% more viewers. It's a rather tortured way of saying that there was a 3.8% decline from the same week a year ago. But last year might have drawn some viewers off to see the prez debate right after Trump's bimbo eruption with Billy Bush.

It seems to be a pattern. NFL viewership did decline in 2016, slow and steady. They were already losing viewers. This year is even worse, adding more losses slowly.

There's potential for the NFL to lose 10%-15% of their total hardcore fanbase over the course of two years. The NFL would still be a 500 lb gorilla even if it was no longer the 800 lb gorilla in the room.

If the NFL lost 20% of its fans, it would still likely be the biggest ad market in TV and draw in large viewership of the most desired demographic. But they would no longer be all that much bigger than others in the market and the rising streaming services.

Here is how the league is down. 8 of 14 games did not achieve capacity attendance.

Week 5 - games with attendance under capacity

At full capacity:

100% Pack @ Cowboys

100% Chiefs @ Texans (Sunday night)

100% 49ers @ Colts

100% Cards @ Eagles

100% Jags @ Steelers

100% Vikings @ Bears (Monday night)

- - - - - - - - - -

Not at full capacity:

98% Pats @ Bucs (Thursday)

94% Chargers @ Giants

87% Ravens @ Raiders

85% Jets @ Browns

80% Bills @ Bengals

65,135 (cap 65,326) Titans @ Dolphins

64,288 (cap 64,500) Panthers @ Lions

60,745 (cap 93,607) Seahawks @ Rams

Bye: Falcons, Broncos, Saints, Redskins

Those numbers still don't look all that terrible to me. The hardcore fans, the season ticket holders are sticking with their teams for the most part. Outside a few cases, I haven't seen anything on ticket prices being lowered or blocs sold to scalpers to fill stadiums.

The NFL's real profits are in broadcast rights. Ticket sales and merchandise sales are just side dishes. To really punch the NFL, you have to drive down their profits from advertising by shrinking their audience share in the most desired viewer demographic. As we read before, if an NFL game does not bring in the promised audience share, then the networks have to refund advertisers money or, more commonly, grant them free ads on other shows on the network which hurts the network profitability.
