Title: Vegas gunman used ‘bump-stock’ device to speed fire

NEW YORK (AP) — The gunman who unleashed hundreds of rounds of gunfire on a crowd of concertgoers in Las Vegas attached what is called a “bump-stock” to two of his weapons, in effect converting semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic ones.

The devices have attracted scrutiny in recent years from authorities.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein has long railed against them. Several years ago, she told The Associated Press she was concerned about the emergence of new technologies that could retrofit firearms to make them fully automatic.

“This replacement shoulder stock turns a semi-automatic rifle into a weapon that can fire at a rate of 400 to 800 rounds per minute,” she said.

A semi-automatic weapon requires one trigger pull for each round fired. With a fully automatic firearm, one trigger pull can unleash continuous rounds until the magazine is empty.

The purchasing of fully automatic weapons has been significantly restricted in the U.S. since the 1930s.

In 1986, the federal National Firearms Act was amended further to prohibit the transfer or possession of machine guns by civilians, with an exception for those previously manufactured and registered.

Numerous attempts to design retrofits failed until recent years when bump stocks came on the market.

The device basically replaces the gun’s shoulder rest, with a “support step” that covers the trigger opening. By holding the pistol grip with one hand and pushing forward on the barrel with the other, the shooter’s finger comes in contact with the trigger. The recoil causes the gun to buck back and forth, “bumping” the trigger.

Technically, that means the finger is pulling the trigger for each round fired, keeping the weapon a legal semi-automatic.

Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock had 23 guns in his hotel room.

Two officials familiar with the investigation told the AP that Paddock had bump stocks attached to two semi-automatic guns. The U.S. officials were briefed by law enforcement and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Paddock killed 59 people and wounded hundreds more at a country music festival near his hotel. Police stormed his 32nd floor hotel room and found that he had killed himself after committing the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Yep. Depending how tightly you hold it. Meaning the rate of fire is variable and will increase and decrease while shooting. Listen to the rate of fire starting at 2:50 in the video:

The rate of fire I heard on the Las Vegas video was constant.

I have never understood why anyone would want to convert a fairly accurate rifle over to a rifle that allows you to miss many times with a single pull of the trigger.

In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

Congrats on finding a bump fire installation video with a chick showing decent cleavage in a tank top and leotard with her legs spread.

I did notice it took her a few false starts initially to get it to simulate the auto-fire as intended.

Some pros say you can never depend on these things in a real self-defense situation and that they're useless for hunting. They say the only use for them is to waste a lot of ammo impressing your buddies down at the range. You can blow through over $100 of the cheapest AR15 ammo a minute with one.

The Vegas shooter was a wealthy, retired accountant & high roller in the casinos, so the cost of ammo was probably chump change to him.

Maybe. He certainly was a wealthy retiree but he had been excessive too. His brother mentioned that he had gone on binges of video poker, staying in hotels for 4 months at a time.

Maybe he lost his money and hit bottom and decided this was how he wanted to go out.

Or he just didn't like country music much.

They're useful if you want to maintain the highest rate of fire into a densely packed crowd with nobody shooting back.

This guy was evil, but he was not stupid.

Or he hated conservative people, and figured that a big convention of country music fans would be a guaranteed collection of conservative folks he could blast at, inflicting maximum casualties on the people he hated.

This video was taken by a taxi driver at Mandalay Bay when the shooting started. Sounds like two full auto guns going at the same time. At first I thought it had to be an echo, but the timing changes.

Youtube video HERE.

My theory is that the concert was so loud that he couldn't sleep. So he dealt with it.

Peddling CTs? You've hung around Decker too long. Next thing, you'll be smoking da ganja and posting those FTP articles.

The perp brought an awful lot of guns & ammo along just to deal with noisy neighbors. Sounds like he'd have had to make at least 4-6 trips back and forth to his car to get them all up to his room. Guns and ammo in those quantities are pretty heavy, maybe 300+ lbs.

Yep, there's something weird about the sound, as Pete said. Could it be two shooters?, - or some type of mechanical device to fire two weapons at once?

It's really hard to tell because of the way sound echoes and bounces off of buildings.

Plus the guy had a corner room, and was shooting out of a window on each corner, which would change the sound.

There IS a possibility there were two shooters and one escaped before the cops got there, but I doubt it.

It WOULD help explain why that nutcase "decided to commit suicide" instead of going out in a "blaze of glory",though. The other guy killed him before he left to keep him from ratting him out.

At this point,I could go either way on this one.

There is a POSSIBILITY there were two shooters, but there is a FACT that proves two different windows were broken out and being fired from. The guy had a corner room, and fired out two windows to have more people to target.

Maybe he was buy himself, and maybe he wasn't. I'm teetering on the edge on this one.

Marginally. You can shoot pretty damn quickly by just pulling the trigger, too.

And it ain't like the people he was shooting at had any cover or that he would miss.

Still, some people just have to have all the trendy toys.

Yeah, but Vegas ain't the kind of town where hotel personnel ask guests many questions. ESPECIALLY high-roller guests that have been there before and stay for days at a time to gamble.

I will honestly never understand why anybody would even want one. I take pride in hitting what I am shooting at with the first shot.

You remind me of a story my brother told me. He had a buddy many years back who had done something to one of those cheap SKS semi-auto rifles (or it just had worn out those parts and was malfunctioning) and it would empty itself if you touched the trigger once. You've probably heard this can happen.

Anyway, they pull up and walk around, hunting turkeys. And a bunch of 40-50 very tranquil turkeys cross the meadow as they are standing in a gully at the edge of the meadow, kind of unseen by the idiot turkeys.

So the SKS guy steps out and pulls the trigger and all hell breaks loose. My brother and his other friends were all diving for cover, sure they were going to die. When the oversize SKS clip was empty and things were quiet, they looked around and he hadn't managed to hit a single turkey who were all within 50 yards when he started shooting.

So they go back to their pickup and drive back through the area, go up over a small hill and finally find a dead turkey, killed on the spot by a stray bullet that had gone over the horizon and killed the turkey, unseen.

My brother didn't want to go hunting with that idiot after that.
