A little less than half of the entire population is already covered by a plan that is paid for by tax dollars. (Federal, State, County, Municipal, military, Medicare and Medicaid.) The other half (all of us working people) are already paying for the other half and ourselves! Simply enroll everyone in Medicare and stop paying for private insurance. Any person of normal intelligence can understand that the cost would be far lower without including the overhead and profits of the insurance industry and big Pharma. Why the Federal Government? Because medical care for profit has been a gigantic failure. Healthcare is an imperfect market. It does not behave according to free- market models. Americans access healthcare when necessary - not because they wish to. There's no need to turn the entire health care system upside down to address the needs of the 10% who are uninsured.
