The NFL is praying for a ratings turnaround

By Richard Morgan
New York Post
September 20, 2017 | 10:29pm | Updated

s the NFL kicks off Week 3 with “Thursday Night Football,” team owners, TV networks and Madison Avenue are hoping it can turn around an early-season ratings dip.

Ratings in Weeks 1 and 2 were down 12 and 15 percent, respectively, according to Nielsen.

To be sure, saturation TV coverage of Hurricane Irma sapped some eyeballs from football during the first week of play.

Still, nine of the 13 NFL windows in the season-to-date posted viewership declines, Sports Media Watch reported.

“Week 2 might have still been disrupted by carryover impacts from the hurricanes that hit Houston and Florida,” UBS analyst Doug Mitchelson offered by way of explanation.

Jefferies analyst John Janedis drilled down further and estimated a 10 percent ratings drop for the season would cost game-carrying networks — CBS, ESPN, Fox and NBC — $200 million in lost operating income.

So far, CBS has been the hardest hit in total viewers, a different measure than ratings points. Its two Sunday afternoon games averaged 13.9 million viewers — down 10 percent from last year.

NBC’s three primetime games have averaged 22.1 million viewers, down 7 percent, while Fox’s four Sunday games — two in early afternoon and two in late afternoon — attracted 5 percent fewer viewers, as have ESPN’s broadcasts of “Monday Night Football.”

I thought that first week could be a fluke but that second week has to scare the owners, the coaches, maybe even the players.

Are they killing the goose that has laid so many golden eggs?

Their bargaining position for broadcast contracts is weakening. There can be no explaining that away.

Personally, I do not follow sports. I have more important things to do. More important to me anyway. After all, it is just a G A M E !!!

But it sounds like they have collectively ( NFL, players, etc ) have all pissed in their bowl of Cheerios. Who cares? I don't !!!

I'm glad that you and many others have never fallen into the "Sunday = Football-ALL-Day" trap. It really *was* a waste of time.

For those of us who *have* followed sports intensely since childhood, this recent subversion of sports in the name of social engineering and brainwashing IS a big deal...

You see sports like the NFL and MLB and NHL for many of us wasn't just a "Game" (though it is and was).

Millions of us have shared generational sports with our dads, uncles, cousins, and brothers, our kids. It was a shared tradition for family and friends. What we *used to* watch through the exclusive lens of "sports" was "sportsmanship" and metaphor for strategic survival and manhood.

What we are seeing is a sinister attempt to feminize and homosexualize our sons while making even the purity of the "sport" merely a vehicle for the advancement of racial and social "justice" and programmed self-loathing and guilt. IOW, one more giant PsyOp.

Hey maybe more people are embracing all day Sunday church and just see NFL football as a distraction. :-)

We can hope. Like any addiction or cult, dramatic intervention is required. The NFL has unwittingly provided the catalyst.

I have been watching like you for a very long time. Calling plays and penalties. Knowing the game as a coach would. HOWEVER, there did become a point at which I realized the NFL Fandom was becoming a religion...or cultist. The fetishism with which it began being presented and glorified was and is especially these days embarrassing.

Imagine the same passion, scrutiny, and love for the NFL exchanged for devotion to The Lord? :-)
