The NFL is praying for a ratings turnaround

By Richard Morgan
New York Post
September 20, 2017 | 10:29pm | Updated

s the NFL kicks off Week 3 with “Thursday Night Football,” team owners, TV networks and Madison Avenue are hoping it can turn around an early-season ratings dip.

Ratings in Weeks 1 and 2 were down 12 and 15 percent, respectively, according to Nielsen.

To be sure, saturation TV coverage of Hurricane Irma sapped some eyeballs from football during the first week of play.

Still, nine of the 13 NFL windows in the season-to-date posted viewership declines, Sports Media Watch reported.

“Week 2 might have still been disrupted by carryover impacts from the hurricanes that hit Houston and Florida,” UBS analyst Doug Mitchelson offered by way of explanation.

Jefferies analyst John Janedis drilled down further and estimated a 10 percent ratings drop for the season would cost game-carrying networks — CBS, ESPN, Fox and NBC — $200 million in lost operating income.

So far, CBS has been the hardest hit in total viewers, a different measure than ratings points. Its two Sunday afternoon games averaged 13.9 million viewers — down 10 percent from last year.

NBC’s three primetime games have averaged 22.1 million viewers, down 7 percent, while Fox’s four Sunday games — two in early afternoon and two in late afternoon — attracted 5 percent fewer viewers, as have ESPN’s broadcasts of “Monday Night Football.”

The NFL is praying for a ratings turnaround

Q: Is Baal in a generous mood? 8-P

OR truthful headline in the alternative:

'NFL Hopes SJW Policy Ordered By NWO Overlords Doesn't Hurt Too Much'

They aren't worried at all. BS headline is exactly what the PTB PR dept presumes we'd believe.

What with fantasy football betting creating a whole new market and reason to watch, and the MSM keeping alive the so-called "excitement" of a sport-turned-political sledgehammer, corporate sponsors (who are also onboard the whole SJW-global agenda -- via coercion or because it advances the NWO) will be continue running their ads -- despite losing money and viewrship.

As we've witnessed of SJW Late Night "Comedy," TV and movie fare that are LOSING MONEY, profits are gladly sacrificed in order to advance THE agenda(s).

The last bastion to fall are professional sports.

The NFL by promoting PINK MONTH (Feminizing the masculine disguised as "Cancer Awareness"), Black NFL Players demand the Commish ENDORSE "kneeling," and now baseball 'Gay Day' exposes the entire political-corporate collusion and subversive of America's traditional institutes.

The memes of "White Privilege," "Toxic Masculinity," celebrating Abortion, and censorship of all speech critical of the Left's Insanity are de rigor...and gaining momentum.

Scrape way the outer scab and we'll find pro-Globalist Homofascist-Atheists and Occultists leading the satanic charge of 0bama's original "Hope & Change" bearing much fruit -- ALL of it rotten and maggot-infested.

It is a business. They can't spin empty seats and declining viewership. The college game last week between USC and Texas, in the same stadium used by the Rams, outdrew the Rams and Charger combined.

They can easily end in-game demonstrations with a 15-yard penalty strictly enforced. Two and you're gone, just like a red card in soccer.

Colin Kaepernick cost the league owners a bunch of money. Attendance and ratings are still falling. Advertising revenue is tied to viewership. Rebates are given for failing to meet promised numbers.

At a reduced rate. When viewership goes down, the ad costs less to run. That is money out of the owner's pocket.

It is a business.

Ostensibly. Technically.

Leftist-slanted Network News, most of their Tee-Bee shows and Hollywood films...as well as The WNBA and NBA are also businesses -- but they are losing propositions financially. Acceptably so for years. Yet, they go on nonetheless.

At a reduced rate. When viewership goes down, the ad costs less to run. That is money out of the owner's pocket.

WHAT IF some unknown, undeclared entities (i.e. Globalist NWO-Elites) were subsidizing the financial loses in order that their agendae were advanced and endorsed? IS IT POSSIBLE that this is the case now? And in the future?

They can't spin empty seats and declining viewership. The college game last week between USC and Texas, in the same stadium used by the Rams, outdrew the Rams and Charger combined.

I'd heard of the NFL's so-called embarrassment. If NFL owners truly cared about filling seats and fan bases, the respective moves would have never been made. Because of TV revenue, merchandising, and backroom subsidizing, minimal financial hits will be taken.

No, empty seats can't be spun, can they? (although, they WILL try some how, some way.)

Viewership will trend a deep, dramatic decline IMO. Those not watching are hardening in their resolve.

I presume that there will be a point where "ratings" like poll numbers are adjusted to maintain the illusion that viewership and fan bases aren't affected to nearly the degree it is and will be.

They can easily end in-game demonstrations with a 15-yard penalty strictly enforced. Two and you're gone, just like a red card in soccer.

Sure, assuming keeping the game in check to begin with was their goal, Nolu. IF they wanted the Kaep Phenomena gone to begin with. But they obviously did not.

The NFL has exposed itself as an obvious tool of political and societal "Hope & Change" agenda. Kaep took the bullet and served the bigger purpose. NFL network cameras even made him a star.

The NFL is now just one more (rather large) hijacked vehicle/institution of American tradition. Next on the docket: MLB. The NBA is already a lost cause. The NHL will even soon be trifled with. American Sports represents "Toxic Masculinity," the Entertainment G-Spot for generations of males, and showcase for racial cooperation. The PTB must destroy all of it in order to advance their agenda.

Colin Kaepernick cost the league owners a bunch of money. Attendance and ratings are still falling. Advertising revenue is tied to viewership. Rebates are given for failing to meet promised numbers.

Yes, Kaep IS helping reduce league revenue...and helping thin out the fan base herd. But MY theory as demonstrated transcends revenue, entertainment, and...THE GAME ITSELF. This is one battle fought on behalf of the Globalist-Elites who understand that national morale and all vestiges of past American tradition and nationalism that brought all demos together as friends (based on this one common alliance of liking the same team) must be crushed under its wheels of its subversive agenda.

It is a business.

Ostensibly. Technically.

Actually. The owners have invested a fortune. Cities have invested a fortune in stadiums.

The players are not invested.

WHAT IF some unknown, undeclared entities (i.e. Globalist NWO-Elites)...

WHAT IF rich, secretive aliens from Mars...

If NFL owners truly cared about filling seats and fan bases

None of them got rich providing a product at a loss.

No, empty seats can't be spun, can they? (although, they WILL try some how, some way.)

So far, they have tried claiming people tuned in to elections and weather broadcasts of hurricanes. Three hours of weather broadcast consists of a guy standing out in the wind and rain for three hours, trying to make himself heard over the wind, saying there is a lot of wind. In days of olde, the JFK assassination did not bump Sunday football off the air.

I presume that there will be a point where "ratings" like poll numbers are adjusted to maintain the illusion that viewership and fan bases aren't affected to nearly the degree it is and will be.

Much of baseball and basketball is pay to view, and they have 162 or 82 games. The NFL has 16 games and requires the huge TV advertising. ESPN must be singing the blues.

They obviously feared what would be a largely urban blowback. The owners got rid of Kaepernick, but did not plan on spawning a few dozen more Kaepernicks.

The NFL has exposed itself as an obvious tool of political and societal "Hope & Change" agenda. Kaep took the bullet and served the bigger purpose. NFL network cameras even made him a star.

The same people got rid of Tim Tebow and Ray Rice. Kaep would be making a fortune right now had he not opted out of his contract. The Kaep thing is just the race pimps at work, and the NFL office not knowing what to do. Network TV, ESPN, and FS1 make it seem like Kaep is oppressed.

After Losing 10,000 Viewers Per Day, ESPN Finally Buckles To Offering Standalone Streaming Video Service

from the swimming-upstream dept
TechDirt
2/15/2017

For years now, ESPN has been the perfect personification of the cable and broadcast industry's denial regarding cord cutting. Long propped up by a system that forces consumers to buy massive bundles of largely-unwatched channels, ESPN has struggled with the rise of streaming alternatives and sleeker, "skinny" channel bundles. The sports network, which has lost 7 million viewers in just a few years, has been trying to argue that these losses (which caused Disney stock to lose $22 billion in value in just two days at one point) are simply part of some kind of overblown, mass hallucination.

Last year, ESPN exec John Skipper even went so far as to suggest that these departing customers weren't worth keeping anyway:

"People trading down to lighter cable packages. That impact hasn't leaked into ad revenue, nor has it leaked into ratings. The people who’ve traded down have tended to not be sports fans, and have tended to be older and less affluent. We still see people coming into pay TV. It remains the widest spread household service in the country after heat and electricity."

In other words, there's "nothing to see here" -- outside of the total collapse of our entire legacy business model. At one point late last year, ESPN even went so far as to make a giant (unwarranted) stink about Nielsen data showing the cable channel had lost 621,000 homes in a single month. Things still aren't looking particularly good for the company, with Disney's earnings indicating that ESPN is fairly consistently losing about 10,000 viewers per day. That's not surprising when you see surveys indicating that 56% of subscribers would drop ESPN in a heartbeat if it meant saving the $8 per user the channel is estimated to cost consumers.

[snip]

It's a heck of a business model to follow. ESPN forgot that people tune into a sports network to see sports.

The NFL is now just one more (rather large) hijacked vehicle/institution of American tradition. Next on the docket: MLB. The NBA is already a lost cause.

For the most part, baseball is already gone from broadcast tv. Basketball is following. Roundball has advantages of not needing such a large stadium, having 82 games, and needing far fewer players.

This is one battle fought on behalf of the Globalist-Elites who understand that national morale and all vestiges of past American tradition and nationalism that brought all demos together as friends (based on this one common alliance of liking the same team) must be crushed under its wheels of its subversive agenda.

Nah, this is just race pimping and social justice bullshitters intruding into sports. It is an opportunity for a new generation of Jacksons and Sharptons.

Actually [the NFL is a business]. The owners have invested a fortune. Cities have invested a fortune in stadiums.

Yes. That's why I qualified my assertion by conceding "technically."

Be that as it may that cities have invested a fortune (or rather Democrat politicians have used stolen tax revenue with questionable consent to help subsidize NFL Barons), the owners' "investment" seems to be more about dancing around what is a YUGE Trophy for bored, arrogant rich guys.

The players aren't invested? I guess that depends on the context.

WHAT IF rich, secretive aliens from Mars...

Ok, I can see you still believe in the Great Fairy Tale where the ESPN is still just a "Sports Network," and NFL is just a "game" where Pink MONTH, Michael Sam, and the whole "Let's Kaepernick Showcase His SJW" was just a coincidence.

The NFL *is* exposed just a Bread & Circus tool. Whether you believe it or not. It's 50% "sport" and 50% Social Justice Tool (which makes it a partner with Globalist-Firsters Inc.)

Even the military fly-overs are fake patriotism and a charade, paid for by Uncle Sam ("A Global Force For Good.")

None of them [NFL owners] got rich providing a product at a loss.

The past is the past. The product and cult is fully grown.

Current NFL owners? After getting subsidized by sponsors, TV Networks, and possible losses underwritten by Global Agenda/SJW Inc, NFL Tycoons haven't much to worry about.

The NFL has 16 games and requires the huge TV advertising. ESPN must be singing the blues.

Yes. IF they and we were still in the traditional business model mode.

Again -- *I* believe we have entered the next phase of societal and cultural evolution where the NFL and ESPN respective brands have been co-opted as PsyOp tools of the Elites. Why is this so difficult to accept? Entire companies, governments and churches (like the Vatican) are already transcending substance for illusion.

They [the NFL] obviously feared what would be a largely urban blowback. The owners got rid of Kaepernick, but did not plan on spawning a few dozen more Kaepernicks.

Brutha...THEY KNEW EXACTLY how allowing Kaep to do his thing would evolve. ESPECIALLY after the whole BLM movement got underway.

That said, if "blowback" is the reason BLM and Antifa AND Kaep Inc. are enabled, then you're inferring tat certain groups and demos have carte blanche and exemption from the law or the usual expected social courtesies.

Last year, ESPN exec John Skipper even went so far as to suggest that these departing customers weren't worth keeping anyway...In other words, there's "nothing to see here" -- outside of the total collapse of our entire legacy business model.

Convenient narrative. I'm sure ESPN's Leftist slant, its "talent" who call out "Whitey" and the President... and awarding tranny Bruce Jenner ESPY the year after they awarded one to homo Michael Sam is also "nothing to see here."

It's a heck of a business model to follow. ESPN forgot that people tune into a sports network to see sports.

The *original* business model; The current one would be suicidal.

The truth is, ESPN has NEVER forgotten why people tuned into it; They just thought they'd start using their influence and exposure as a SJW vehicle -- which is no different than Hollywood, TV Networks, or the Music industries.

For the most part, baseball is already gone from broadcast tv. Basketball is following. Roundball has advantages of not needing such a large stadium, having 82 games, and needing far fewer players.

Baseball is still thriving in the Philly/NY markets.

Basketball? It's dead, Jim, and has been for many years.

Nah, this is [not a battle fought on behalf of the Globalist-Elites] just race pimping and social justice bullshitters intruding into sports. It is an opportunity for a new generation of Jacksons and Sharptons.

I have hardly heard either's name since Sharpton marched in the "Fry 'em Up!" demonstration that wound up revving up the same unrepentant, unchecked Antifa/BLM hate and disrespect for America we now see among NFL players, at random cities and towns, and at College campuses on a daily basis. What an odd coincidence.
