No one expects an octogenarian to stop a pest, let alone one on a rooftop — but don’t tell 83-year-old Wilford Burgess that. After hours of a suspect walking along various rooftops in his California neighborhood, Burgess took matters into his own hands when the man got to his roof. Burgess climbed atop the roof himself and threw the man off.
Police had attempted to get the man to come down, but their repeated requests were denied and it seemed the force may have been fearful to get too close to the man without knowing if he was armed and dangerous. But Burgess said he “got tired of his games and pushed him off.”
The elderly grandfather appeared to be in good shape — and told news cameras that being old wasn’t an excuse for sitting around.
He also said, “You come to my house, you don’t have to worry about him because I’ll be all over it ’cause I’m going to load up.”
While Burgess grabbed his neighbor’s ladder and likely surprised the suspect by coming near him, Burgess granddaughter, Ashley Wrenn, filmed the entire event. After the suspect was pushed off the roof — unharmed — he was taken in for a mental evaluation.
On her part, Wrenn said she was thankful to her grandfather for doing what he had to to protect his family.
