Title: Prof Tweets That He’d ‘Be OK if #BetsyDevos Was Sexually Assaulted’

The now-deleted tweet was a response to Devos’s plans to rein in Title IX on college campuses.

A professor at Austin Community College tweeted that he would “be OK if #BetsyDevos was sexually assaulted” because of her intentions to change the guidelines for how colleges handle sexual assault.

Rob Ranco, who is an adjunct professor of paralegal studies, posted the tweet on Friday. It has since been deleted, but not before a screenshot was obtained by Campus Reform. It stated, in full: “I’m not wishing for it… but I’d be ok if #BetsyDevos was sexually assaulted.

Ranco then followed it with what seems to be some attempts at explanation:

“Perhaps Betsy doesn’t understand how horrible rape is. She’s made the world more dangerous for my daughters. I need her to understand.” (“Yes, @twitter. My words were harsh. I don’t wish harm on anyone. I wish there’s some way #BetsyDevos would understand and care about others.”

He also jokingly tweeted that “Twitter trolls are now due process experts! Ranco’s tweets, of course, have faced a lot of criticism. His account (@RancoLaw) is not on Twitter anymore and a spokesperson from the school issued a statement to Campus Reform saying that the school “does not condone these comments and their sentiment.

I’ve got to say, I’m really wondering just what in the hell this guy could have been thinking. Now, I do understand that there are a lot of problems with the way that we treat victims of rape and sexual assault in this culture. It’s disgusting, but it’s true: There are far too many people who would rather just write off all accusers as being opportunistic liars than actually try to understand what it must feel like to be in a rape victim’s position — to understand, for example, how issues like shame and/or power dynamics might prevent a woman from reporting her assault to the police.

It’s very, very important to educate people on this issue. It’s also important, however, to acknowledge the plain and simple fact that current Title IX guidelines have created a few problems of their own. As Reason’s Robby Soave points out, people who are critical of Betsy DeVos for wanting to alter the guidelines should stop and think about the fact “that every crazy Title IX case she referenced actually happened.”

Rape is a serious issue, which is exactly why it should be handled in a serious manner — for the sake of everyone involved. After all, as Soave explains, campus kangaroo courts not only force the accused to act as their own defense attorneys, but they also can force victims to have to act as their own prosecutors.

It allows for situations such as what happened at Stony Brook in New York, where an accuser had to face and question her alleged rapist herself, without the assistance of a lawyer or even her own therapist.

The truth is, acknowledging that there are serious problems with the way that rape victims are being treated, and acknowledging that there are problems with the way that colleges have been using Title IX, are not mutually exclusive. It doesn’t do anyone any good to act as if they are, and it certainly doesn’t do any good to say that you’d be totally fine with someone being raped simply because she recognizes the latter problems.

Poster Comment:

This is why this idiot 'teaches' at a community college. He's an 'adjunk' professor of paralegal studies and is outraged by the notion of due process. And he can't even use good grammar. No wonder the kids learn nothing in college.

And so we reach the end of our story. For now.

Austin Community College Professor Resigns After Tweeting ‘I’d Be OK If Betsy DeVos Was Sexually Assaulted’

Attorney and professor Robert Ranco has resigned from his teaching post at Austin Community College after tweeting he’d “be OK if” Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was sexually assaulted.

In a tweet that has since been deleted, Attorney and Austin Community College Professor Robert Ranco wrote that he would “be ok if Betsy DeVos was sexually assaulted.” The tweet has since been archived.

Ranco’s tweet came in response to DeVos’ announcement that she would be implementing changes on how universities handle sexual assault investigations. Specifically, DeVos is implementing changes that will ensure that those accused of sexual misconduct receive the due process rights they deserve.

Earlier this week, Ranco resigned from The Carlson Law Firm. He released an apology statement in which he called the tweet “a mistake.”

My tweet from Friday was a mistake. I take full responsibility from it. It was my mistake and nobody else’s and I apologize. I’ll be working continuously moving forward to make it for my mistake. I hope that Secretary DeVos and anyone else who was offended, impacted, shocked by my actions that they can find it in their hearts to forgive me.

Now, Ranco has resigned from his post as an adjunct professor of paralegal studies at Austin Community College. In a statement, the school wrote that Ranco’s tweet does not represent the college’s values. “The comment he posted on his personal social media page does not represent ACC’s vision, mission, or values,” the school’s statement read. “The college never condones sexual assault under any circumstance.”

Ranco released an apology to DeVos on Twitter. “I made comments directed at you that were absolutely inexcusable, and I am sorry for that,” he wrote. “I may disagree with your policies, but please know that I don’t believe anyone should ever be subjected to a sexual assault.”

Resigns....INSTEAD of being fired by the cowardly college. OR the cowardly law firm.

Not a detail lost on those who followed this story.

We'll all presume he'll be quickly re-hired by fellow brethren at another Marxist-run propaganda mill and unscrupulous law firm.

NO such thing as "too offensive" to the Left, Anarchists, or those with ZERO principles.

Everyone is more comfortable with a resignation than a firing. That's just how it is.

Fewer lawsuits, the employee walks away with some dignity, etc.

Among professionals, you'll almost always see resignations instead of a firing.

Yes...but context matters, doesn't it?

There is a double standard in effect once again. When the subject "offender" is a *conservative*, then the firing is LOUD, PROUD and indicting of ALL the subject's ilk. When as in THIS case the subject offender is Leftist, then instead of a LOUD firing, the subject is allowed unmerited dignity to leave on their terms.

Among professionals, you'll almost always see resignations instead of a firing.

Yes, I understand. UNDER NORMAL circumstances. But "professional" in this case is relative. The protocol seems NOT to apply when the offending target of what may be considered a "Hate Speech" and personal expressed and suggested threat is a Trump Cabinet member, associate, or family member.
