The Salt Lake City detective who handcuffed and dragged a Utah nurse who refused to take blood from an unconscious patient has been fired from his part-time paramedic job.

Gold Cross Ambulance, an emergency response service, announced Tuesday that Payne has been fired “effective immediately,” Fox 13 Salt Lake City reported.

In a statement, Gold Cross said while Payne was not working for the ambulance company during the incident, the company takes “his inappropriate remarks regarding patient transports seriously.”

Payne was filmed on July 26 handcuffing University Hospital Nurse Alex Wubbels after she refused to draw blood from an unconscious patient, citing hospital policy.

After some back-and-forth, Payne told Wubbels she was under arrest and physically moved her outside while she screamed.

During the recorded incident, Payne said he could retaliate against the hospital when he said, “I’ll bring them all the transients and take good patients elsewhere.”

Gold Cross had previously put Payne on administrative leave because of his pending criminal investigation with the police department, which put him on paid leave.

Payne worked for Gold Cross Ambulance since 1983, according to Fox 13.

And that is that.

This cop and his supervisor must be made an examples of, so that other cops understand that their badge does not give them plenary power to do and say whatever they want, whenever they want. Their gun and handcuffs do not give them the power to bully their way through society, regardless of law.

There is zero tolerance exercised in our society now for things like driving without a seat belt or texting while driving. False arrests under color of authority and violations of civil rights and police bullying are far, FAR more serious crimes than those petty offenses.

It's time for a zero tolerance regime of police bullying and police overstep. When the police don't know the law, ignorance of the law is no excuse - remove immunity, sue, prosecute, fire.

They have to LEARN the law and be SUBJECT TO IT at all times, and they have to stop abusing the public they serve. The police need to be reminded they are servants, not masters, and the way to do remind them of that is by making public examples of the cops who get out of line, like this guy.

You can imagine how the phones at Gold Cross were ringing non-stop with angry callers.

Fox13: SLC detective who arrested nurse fired from part-time paramedic job

“Gold Cross Ambulance in Salt Lake City, Utah has terminated Jeff Payne as a part-time Paramedic effective immediately. Although Jeff was not working for Gold Cross Ambulance at the time of the incident, we take his inappropriate remarks regarding patient transports seriously,” the emergency medical transport company said in a statement released Tuesday. “We acknowledge those concerned individuals who have contacted us regarding this incident and affirm our commitment to serving all members of the community with kindness and respect. We will continue to maintain our values of outstanding patient focused care, safety, and the complete trust of the communities we serve.”

It was a stupid thing to say. I don't see how any private ambulance companies could still employ him after he's on video talking about dumping transients on the university hospital as revenge for his assault on the nurse.

I read somewhere on Utah's legislative site that phlebotomists have to be recertified and take more training every two years. The initial training is usually around 3 days apparently. And a phlebotomist can be reprimanded privately or publicly or have their license yanked for unprofessional conduct.

So they'll likely go after the phlebotomy licensing organization next, trying to yank his certification. I noticed that Rotten Cop has already been suspended from his blood-draw duties by the PD.

He's just the catalyzing incident. He went after the wrong private citizen in the wrong institution, so he's getting the attention, and of course he'll be made an example.

The bigger picture is that this could galvanize a movement to start reining in the police and ratcheting up the demands of professionalism and respect for law on their part. And that would be a good thing.

The bigger picture is...

Not so fast.

Maybe it will spark a larger movement but it is more likely it is more narrowly about whether a head nurse of a burn unit can be manhandled and dragged out of her hospital under arrest by cops bent on collecting evidence illicitly from a vulnerable patient under the hospital's care.

I'd bet it's the lesser, not the greater impact.

OTOH, cops will think twice before challenging hospital personnel on their own turf. No doubt, police training will emphasize more what a cop can and cannot do inside a hospital. So it will have some spillover effect, no doubt.

And the same will likely be even more true of nurse and doctor training and hospital administrators setting policy. They will be more vigilant about protecting patients, less likely to defer to any cop who shows up trying to collect evidence without a warrant.

As for the nurse in SLC, I expect she will be quite busy attending regional nursing conventions, talking about her ordeal and why nurses have to protect their patients' rights. Often, those professional conventions are quite dull with their dry panel discussions. This nurse has a dramatic story and one that was publicly lauded across the country. She'll get one standing ovation after the next from other nurses, administrators, etc.

Not so fast.

You're right. The effects will probably be limited to the medical profession, because it's big, rich, organized and has the Republican Party as its political protector (the GOP has the doctors just like the Democrats have the lawyers).

This will probably end up being a pissing contest between the police establishment and the medical establishment, which the medical establishment will win because they are higher status and wealthier.

The general public will remain "little people", subject to being treated the way that the cops choose to treat them.
