United States News Title: HereÂ’s how TrumpÂ’s supporters reacted to his Afghanistan speech President Donald Trumps highly anticipated speech outlining his war policy in Afghanistan pleased those wishing for an escalation in the region in order to declare victory, but others were not as enthused. Many of the presidents supporters took to Twitter to register their displeasure with what they saw as an endorsement of his predecessors endless war. Right-wing firebrand and enthusiastic Trump supporter Ann Coulter tweeted that Trump had become a threat to his own re-election because he was sending, More Troops to Useless Human-Grinder in Afghanistan. Whereas I see Trump as a threat to his re-election. Report: More Troops to Useless Human-Grinder in Afghanistan. https://t.co/Hqw2cMnXX4 Ann Coulter (@AnnCoulter) August 22, 2017 Whos going to pay for it? What is our measure of success? We didnt win with 100K troops. How will we win with 4,000 more? conservative talk host Laura Ingraham demanded to know. I thought we were going to drain the swamp in Washington, not clear the desert in Afghanistan, she added. Who's going to pay for it? What is our measure of success? We didn't win with 100K troops. How will we win with 4,000 more? https://t.co/XHj9GpJzaZ Laura Ingraham (@IngrahamAngle) August 22, 2017 I thought we were going to drain the swamp in Washington, not clear the desert in Afghanistan. https://t.co/gQFnQjoj0n Laura Ingraham (@IngrahamAngle) August 22, 2017 An opinion piece at the onetime reliably pro-Trump Breitbart News blasted the decision, saying, I voted for Donald J. Trump because he promised change. I may have made a mistake. Should we retitle national security adviser H.R. McMaster as President H.R. McMaster? Another article on Breitbart added to the chorus of discouragement. The speech was a disappointment to many who had supported his calls during the campaign to end expensive foreign intervention and nation building, it read. He acknowledged the frustration that Americans felt after 16 years of war without an end in sight. 17 days, 17 weeks, 17 months, 17 years
it doesnt matter how long were in Afghanistan. We wont change a damn thing, former Illinois GOP Rep. Joe Walsh said. Get out now. 17 days, 17 weeks, 17 months, 17 years
it doesn't matter how long we're in Afghanistan. We won't change a damn thing. Get out now. Joe Walsh (@WalshFreedom) August 22, 2017 Other Trump supporters were equally disappointed: I'd be more optimistic about new Afghanistan strategy if Lindsey Graham, John McCain, and Marco Rubio didn't like it. Tennessee (@TEN_GOP) August 22, 2017 Mr. President, please remember America First, not Afghanistan First. Tennessee (@TEN_GOP) August 22, 2017 We've been in Afghanistan for 16 years & terrorism has only gotten worse. How many more years? How much more tax money? How many more lives? Makada 🇺🇸 (@_Makada_) August 22, 2017 Neo-cons McCain, Rubio & Lindsey Graham are all very happy that Trump will continue failed policies of Bush & Obama in Afghanistan. Not good Makada 🇺🇸 (@_Makada_) August 22, 2017 Figures associated with the alt-right movement were especially critical of the speech. Next year, a baby born when the United States first invaded Afghanistan can sign up to eventually fight and die there. Stefan Molyneux (@StefanMolyneux) August 22, 2017 250 years of failed Western imperialism in Afghanistan doesn't mean that 251 won't turn things totally around! Stefan Molyneux (@StefanMolyneux) August 22, 2017 Why did we even have an election? Mike Cernovich 🇺🇸 (@Cernovich) August 22, 2017 General Jared. Mike Cernovich 🇺🇸 (@Cernovich) August 22, 2017 Congratulations to President McMaster! Mike Cernovich 🇺🇸 (@Cernovich) August 22, 2017 I was hoping Trump would announce a withdrawal from Afghanistan. We've been there far too long & wasted so many American resources. Baked Alaska (@bakedalaska) August 22, 2017 Despite Trumps apparent flip-flop on Afghanistan, some supporters remained stalwart and faithful. Trump is a fixer. His plan will fix Afghanistan the same way he is fixing our GDP. Bill Mitchell (@mitchellvii) August 22, 2017 While comedian Jim Gaffigan just used it as fodder for humor: Trump's speech is longer than our war in Afghanistan. Jim Gaffigan (@JimGaffigan) August 22, 2017 Many of those opposed to what some called military adventurism pointed to the enthusiastic support of the speech from Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) as a sign that Trumps war policy was heading the wrong way.
