Executive Order—Arrest and Imprisonment of Irresponsible Newspaper Reporters and Editors Major-General John A. Drx, Commanding at New York: Whereas there has been wickedly and traitorously printed and published this morning in the New York World and New York Journal of Commerce, newspapers printed and published in the city of New York, a false and spurious proclamation purporting to be signed by the President and to be countersigned by the Secretary of State, which publication is of a treasonable nature, designed to give aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States and to the rebels now at war against the Government and their aiders and abettors, you are therefore hereby commanded forthwith to arrest and imprison in any fort or military prison in your command the editors, proprietors, and publishers of the aforesaid newspapers, and all such persons as, after public notice has been given of the falsehood of said publication, print and publish the same with intent to give aid and comfort to the enemy; and you will hold the persons so arrested in close custody until they can be brought to trial before a military commission for their offense. You will also take possession by military force of the printing establishments of the New York World and Journal of Commerce, and hold the same until further orders, and prohibit any further publication therefrom. Note: On the morning of May 18, 1864, a forged proclamation was published in the World, and Journal of Commerce, of New York. The proclamation named a day for fasting and prayer, called for 400,000 fresh troops, and purposed to raise by an "immediate and peremptory draft," whatever quotas were not furnished on the day specified.

No. You are using inductive reasoning -- from the specific to the general -- which is a fallacy in that he did not apply it to all publications, only those which published a treasonous fabrication.
Another Flamer who reads his history. I've always believed the taunts about his being a knuckle-dragging baboon were close to the mark. Of course I am a Southern sympathizer who believed in the cause for which the CSA bolted. Liberals are like Slinkys. They're good for nothing, but somehow they bring a smile to your face as you shove them down the stairs.
If you need government approval to own a gun, I see nothing wrong with government approval to own a printing press. Abuse either freedom and you lose your license.
It's not a freedom if you need a government issued license. Come and take them, you tyrannical goon! False premise. It is the commission of a crime for which they are arrested and prosecuted.

You don't need government approval to own a gun. The exception being a fully automatic gun, which does require a license. Guns are owned and traded all the time here in Texas with no government approval required. Licensed dealers are subject to government regulation, which is largely a tax on the law abiding citizen, but also prevents criminals from risk-free acquisition.

The exception being a fully automatic gun, which does require a license. I know that, but whitey thinks that some (unlimited?) infringements are OK. It would take a constitutional amendment to put restrictions on any arms, or the right of any US citizen to keep and bear them. You're referring to an alleged "tax" of $200 under the NFA '34, and additional fake regulations added to it. It's illegal legislation, not law. It was wartime, and an election was looming. There had already been draft riots in New York, so the false publication was intended to inflame passions against the incumbent president, in favor of anybody to replace him in the coming elections. The incendiary nature of the claim, under those conditions, was such that another draft riot could have ensued. And so Lincoln acted, decisively, to shut the presses that were lying, and thereby silence the mouths that could have launched another breach of the peace in time of war, weakening the country in the face of the enemy. Lincoln was right.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that "reasonable" restrictions may be placed on guns. They believe that others have rights also. Silly concept, huh?
