PORT ST. LUCIE, FL -- It's not quite the same thing as throwing an 80-yard touchdown pass in overtime to win an NFL playoff game, but Tim Tebow's heroics were on display Thursday night.
Tebow, who plays for the St. Lucie Mets -- the Single-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's New York Mets -- stepped to plate last night as the Mets were tied 4-4 with the Daytona Tortugas and delivered the first walk-off home run of his career.
Last month, Tebow was called up to the St. Luci Mets after having played withing the organization for the last year. Critics have called the promotion -- and Tebow's attempt to play professional baseball -- a publicity stunt.
However, in 16 games, Tebow is batting .327 with three home runs and 10 RBIs. He's collected 16 hits in 49 at bats and has a .421 on-base percentage as well.
While Tebow is off to a good start, it's unlikely that he'll make his MLB debut anytime soon as he'll need to progress through some of the tougher levels of minor league baseball before he's promoted to the majors.

Appears he turned an inside pitch and muscled it for an opposite field HR. Impressive. Showing opposite field power, even at that level, is a good sign he will probably start at AA next year and finish next season being called up to have a go at AAA.

When my parents moved to Florida from New York, a deciding factor for my father was where he could go to baseball games. They settled in Fort Pierce which is a short drive to St Lucie and a shorter drive to Vero Beach. As a Mets die hard fan he was thrilled to be able to go to Mets spring training camp at St Lucie and later take in games for the single A affiliate. The Dodgers had their spring training camp in Vero Beach years ago and like a kid he would go to those games too. It took years for my mother to realize why settling in Fort Pierce was so important. :)
He was a bit disappointed when the Dodgers moved their spring training camp from the Grapefruit league in Vero FL to the Cactus league in Arizona.
Tim Tebow is a huge sports icon in Florida, having quarterbacked the University of Florida to two national championships and won the Heisman Trophy. This is a Big Deal in football-crazy Florida.
Yet whenever the Florida media mention his name, they always precede it with “controversial” and/or “divisive.” That’s because Tim Tebow is a devout Christian as well as a sports celebrity.
It’s all a part of the Left’s hatred of Western civilization, Christianity first and foremost. The local television talking heads who repeat the “controversial’ mantra are the poltical Left’s “useful idiots.”
