As Independence Day comes around again we should spend a few moments between barbecue and fireworks to think about the meaning of independence. The colonists who rebelled against the British Crown were, among other things, unhappy about taxation. Yet, as economist Gary North points out, the total burden of British imperial taxation was about one-to-two percent of national income.

Some 241 years later, Washington claims more of our money as its own than King George could have ever imagined. What do we get in this bargain? We get a federal government larger and more oppressive than before 1776, a government that increasingly views us as the enemy.

Think about NSA surveillance. As we have learned from brave whistleblowers like William Binney and Edward Snowden, the US intelligence community is not protecting us from foreigners who seek to destroy our way of life. The US intelligence community is itself destroying our way of life. Literally every one of our electronic communications is captured and stored in vast computer networks. Perhaps they will be used against “dissidents” in the future who question government tyranny.

We have no privacy in our computers or our phones. If the government wants to see what we are doing at any time, it simply switches on our phone camera or computer camera – or our “smart” television. Yet today we continue to hear, “I’ve got nothing to hide.”

In a recent interview on our Liberty Report, Edward Snowden made the excellent point that, “saying that you don’t care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don’t care about freedom of speech because you have nothing to say.”

Think about the TSA. The freedom to travel is fundamental, and our Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures is the law of the land. But if you dare to exercise that right by purchasing an air ticket, you are treated like a Guantanamo Bay detainee. Don’t dare question as the TSA agents commit acts that would be crimes were they done by anyone else. Yet so many Americans still believe this is what it takes to be “safe.”

Think about the military industrial complex. The US government spends more on its military empire than much of the rest of the world combined. Our so-called mortal enemy Russia spends ten cents to every dollar we spend on weapons of war. Yet we are told we must spend more! Imagine the amazing peaceful scientific discoveries that might be made were so many researchers and scientists not on the government payroll designing new ways to end life on earth.

Think about the Fed. Since the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913 the US dollar has lost some 98 percent of its value. Is the destruction of our currency not a cruel form of tyranny, hitting hardest those who can least afford it?

I think it’s time for us to declare our independence from an oppressive government that seeks to control our money and our lives in ways unimaginable to those who rebelled against the British Crown in 1776. Our revolution is peaceful, and it concentrates on winning hearts and minds one at a time. But it marches on. We must reclaim the spirit of independence every day and every night and intensify the struggle against those who seek to impose tyranny upon us.

Ok, Deckard, let's you and I declare independence as you've suggested: peacefully, without violence.

The first step is to get free of surveillance. That's easy: cut the cable, turn off the tv, don't carry a phone, and don't surf or post on the Internet. Cut the wire to the grid and do without the information society.

Since if you have a computer and a cable, if they want to get you they will just download child porn into your computer and then arrest you, and you will not win your case (because it was on your computer), the only way to be free of that is to have no computer, no phone, no Internet, no access.

What do we use the Internet FOR anyway, most of us? Entertainment. That includes this chat board - this is entertainment, not anything serious or real.

So, just stop it, cut it off, cut the cable, get rid of the TV. A simple old radio will give you music and news if you need it (you don't).

Cut the cable to electronic entertainment, and you will free yourself from surveillance, from being framed, and free up a lot of time you'd otherwise waste.

You will still have a land line, so you're not completely isolated. And you'll still have electricity, and heating bills, water bills and rent or mortgage. Also insurance and property taxes. To cut those things is progressively more painful. Cut off the phone and, given you have no cell phone, you're hard to reach, but you're also cut off from reaching people.

It's possible to cut off electricity, but that's pretty miserable. You can cut off heat too, but that means living without running water for several months a year if you live where things freeze.

If you own land, you will pay property taxes. The only way to avoid THAT is to either squat, which puts you in harm's way as a tresspasser, or to move to a country without property tax...or to rent. As a renter you don't pay property tax, but you do pay a landlord.

Truth is, you can't get free of property tax or rent unless you go homeless. That's a pretty steep price to pay to "be free"...and you WON'T be free - you'll be a slave to finding temporary shelter against the elements. Look at the homeless. Do they look free to you?

Essentially, you can go back to the 18th Century, AD or BC, and live without electricity or running water, but at a minimum you're going to need to pay rent or property tax and provide yourself heat - just like people have had to do since the dawn of time. (And without running water, you're going to stink).

Rent/housing costs are the single greatest expense for most people, after taxes.

To pay that rent, you need a job. THAT is really where your liberty is crushed. It isn't the government who limits you so severely (by looking at your porn habit - who really cares? One of the virtues of the gay and transgender movement is that it has become impossible to socially ridicule people for their sexual proclivities - do it and YOU will be ostracized. So, paradoxically, in this age of porn the fact of gay and trans liberation has, in effect, taken the power of shame away from the government that spies on you. You look at weird gay porn? That would have been a source to destroy your reputation and livelihood twenty years ago, but today if somebody attacks you for that, HE will be ostracized as a homophobe and bashed down - in a sense, the gay liberation and trans movement have liberated everybody from the power of the intelligence services to use sexual shame to beat people down - the society has reacted by becoming shameless, removing power from the spies. Of course, in a double-paradox, the only people still at risk are conservatives themselves, because they are as inclined to sexual corruption as everybody else, but have always relied on secrecy to get away with it. Today, the government knows. And so it is possible to destroy a Gingrich or a Hastert, because their voters are conservatives who hide their kinks, but you can't destroy a Clinton or a Kennedy by revealing theirs, because their voters are liberated and don't care).

Probably the greatest thing you can declare independence from is old-style conventional morality, because it will render you a slave to a standard that you're not going to be able to follow. They usually don't need to implant child porn on your computer, because the regular stuff you actually do is usually enough to destroy conservatives' reputations if they are fully exposed.

Anyway, to house yourself you have to work, and that devours your time and puts you at the mercy of an employer in an employment-at-will country where you can be fired for your political views, if you express them, or for your social views, if they are intolerant. America is becoming an increasingly miserable place for people with not just conventional morality, but the belief that conventional morality should be legally normative. It isn't anymore, and in most places it's actually an offense and a hostile act to try to assert conventional morality as a norm.

It's easier to declare independence from conventional morality than it is from the need to please an employer.

With employers, you're stuck. You need their money and you can't get free. There is no independence fast. Eventually, you can built up enough to live on without a job, as long as you augment it with Social Security. Until then, you're not going to be free pretty much no matter what you do.

So the BEST thing you can do is to calm down and accept your fate. With 20/20 hindsight, nobody who got killed or crippled, or lost family, in either the Revolution or the Civil War would have done it a second time. What they got out of it wasn't worth it for them.

You can not be free and independent without change to society. To create that change, it appears that force is required.
