JAC Motors of China has presented the first two SUVs manufactured in Mexico. It happened after JAC signed an alliance with Giant Motors Latin America and the Inbursa financial group, owned by Mexican magnate Carlos Slim, which represents an investment of around 4.4 billion pesos (236 million U.S. dollars). "It is significant for us to see our company enter the North America market, where Mexico plays an important and strategic role. We want to use this to gradually update our products and position the brand in a mature market with potential niche," David Zhang, deputy director-general of JAC International, told Xinhua on Tuesday. The vehicles are being manufactured at a plant in Tepeapulco, in the central state of Hidalgo, which is expected to produce 10,000 vehicles over five years. Zhang said that JAC products, especially light trucks, are already accepted in Mexico. "We want to move forward step by step. First, we want to meet the demand of the Mexican market. There is a big market here and our SUV products are liked by young Mexican people, who will be our main consumers," he said. "We will then use this production base to extend our business to nearby countries, including all of Latin America and the Caribbean." Jose Luis Romo Cruz, secretary of economic development for the state of Hidalgo, said this investment would put Hidalgo back on the international automotive map. He said that China is a very important market for Hidalgo, which is seeking to bring Chinese investment toward the automotive, renewable energy, agricultural and aerospace sectors. "The challenge facing our state is the same (as) all of Mexico is facing. We are at a stage where we are seeking the best way to diversify our markets and not rely only on the U.S.," emphasized the official. "We are more than ready to receive Chinese investment." Navistar and JAC signed their joint venture agreements in September 2010 and since that time the companies have been setting things in motion for a swift and smooth launch upon formal government approval. Navistar has established a central China office in Shanghai, as well as satellite offices in Beijing and Hefei with a well-rounded team of Chinese nationals and U.S. and Brazilian employees who work closely with their JAC counterparts, gaining insight and understanding of the Chinese market. In Hefei, product development engineers from both companies have been collaborating on engine and vehicle design. Additionally, construction has started on a 93,000m2 machining and assembly facility, research and development center, and administrative offices in Hefei to support the new venture. Global Collaboration The engine joint venture represents the first phase of global collaboration between Navistar and JAC. The companies plan to formally submit their commercial truck joint venture application to the Chinese government later this fall. In addition, earlier this spring the two companies signed letters of intent (LOIs) to collaborate on design and production of light-duty commercial truck export opportunities for Navistar dealers in Brazil and Mexico. Products The products slated for the joint venture include Navistar's MaxxForce® 3.2, 4.8, 7.2 and JAC's 2.8 4DA1 liter engines. The engines offer up to 118 kW power and 45.9 kgf.m torque @ 1,500-2,200 rpm; 140 kW power and 73.4 kgf.m torque @ 1,200-1,600 rpm,243 kW / 132.6 kgf.m @ 1,200-1,600 rpm, and 88wW/28.5 kgf.m @ 2,000-2,200 rpm respectively. All engines deliver quiet, fuel efficient operation. How is PACCAR doing lately? I haven't followed them in a long time ('09). One of my high school buddies had a couple of Internationals: the Suburban type and a Scout. Near as you could come to a Soviet vehicle in the US back then.

Yep, that's it. My buddy had an orange Travelall, also 4WD. I should probably rate it as Spartan rather than Soviet, as it did get us to the mountains regularly without fail. And it had floor mats! (rubber ish).
