A 31-year-old man died after he reportedly ignored warnings about swimming after getting a new tattoo and contracted a flesh-eating bacteria infection in the Gulf of Mexico. The unidentified man, whose case was detailed in the British Medical Journal, had gotten a tattoo on his right calf five days prior to swimming, Metro reported.

The man had chosen a crucifix and pair of praying hands for his latest ink, and began suffering from fever, chills and a rash close to the tattoo after swimming, the news outlet reported. He reportedly developed sepsis in his right calf, which had turned purple by the time he was admitted to the hospital.

Two weeks after he was placed on life support, his condition further deteriorated and his kidneys failed, according to Metro. Doctors reportedly believed his years of alcohol abuse left him susceptible to vibriosis infection and septic shock.

While the man’s nationality was not identified, vibriosis causes an estimated 80,000 illnesses and 100 deaths in the U.S. each year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), patients become infected by consuming raw or undercooked seafood, or by exposing a wound to seawater. (1 image)

The crucifix kills again. When will we finally outlaw it?

Of course, the man was an idiot to wait until his calf turned purple (gangrene). He would have been very sick, his leg and surface veins would all be bright red from sepsis, etc. So he was an idiot and died of an easily treated infection.

This is what his leg would have looked like with the purple, the swelling, the red blotches. If he'd gone to the doctor even a day or so earlier, he probably would have lived even if he would have lost the leg or some of the flesh.

A couple of things need to be pointed out, here.

Number 1 is some doctors are fools, and some patients are even bigger fools for not getting a second opinion. The first doctor I went to was on a Friday night. My scrotum started swelling that afternoon, and by that night was so big I had to walk bow-legged. The doctor told me "This is a holiday weekend, but take these pills and if the swelling hasn't gone down by Tuesday, come back to see me."

I told him he had lost his bleeping mind if he thought I was going to wait that long, and I would be going to see another doctor if I wasn't better by the next day.

Which brings up the second issue. If you haven't had this problem or know someone who has, chances are you would never believe how quickly it advances.

Point of fact. I didn't make it to the next day, other than technically. I got hit with very high fever that night, and my scrotum burst and was leaking black pus that smelled like a corpse. That's right, black pus. It took me a while to get to the local ER because I live alone, and my fever was so high at times I was forgetting I was sick. When I was lucid,I decided to wait until it dropped below 103 to drive the 30 miles to the ER. It was around 1 AM when my fever broke enough I figured it was safe to drive. Even then I had to stop along the road a couple of times and walk around my truck to make the hallucinations stop.

As it happened,I got VERY lucky. The ER surgeon on duty that night recognized it for what it was immediately and started anti-biotics and called in a surgical team immediately. He recognized it because the summer before he had amputed a 15 year old girls leg after what she and everyone else had thought was a simple spider bite turned nuclear, and when her family rushed her to the hospital that night they had to amputate her leg to save her.

They even had me sign a waiver giving them permission to castrate me if that seemed to be the only option before they would roll me into the ER. I was lucky that didn't have to happen, but after the surgery I was in intensive care for 11 days recovering. People these days just aren't kept in intensive care for 11 days anymore. It's practically unheard of.

I was even a semi-celebrity. Nurses and doctors kept coming in to look at "the man with a scrotum the size of a bowling ball." 4 or 5 years later I had to go back to the ER after breaking a hand, and the doctor on duty and a couple of the nurses recognized me. "HEY! You are the guy with the big nuts!" Ahhhh, fame!

They burned the clothes I was wearing when I came in because of the black pus.

To sum it up it is rare, few doctors have seen it or know how to recognize it and treat it in time because it is a VERY aggressive disease. A lot of times by the time it shows up at the ER and the doc gets to see it and then takes the time to run the tests and do the research on how to treat it,it's already too late to save the patient.

I was told by the head surgeon that if I had gotten to the hospital 30 minutes later that I would have died and there would have been nothing they could have done to save me.

You never did say what the disease was.

I had a friend a bit younger than me, a big strapping guy. In his early forties, his testicle started swelling up. It got to a size between tennis ball and softball (I tried not to inquire too much). It had some kind of fluid buildup and the fluids were blocked from draining as they should. They did a procedure to insert a tube to allow drainage and after a few months, it started behaving itself again and draining normally and they finally removed the tube. It was a very unpleasant extended experience for him.

Flesh-eating bacteria. I forgot the medical name for it.
