Jared Kushner — President Trump’s son-in-law and closest advisor — is now the FBI’s newest target in their investigation into the Trump campaign and Russia.
Kushner, who had a series of meetings with top Russian officials that he failed to disclose in his application for a top-secret security clearance, is being scrutinized as a key person in the investigation now headed by former FBI Director Robert Mueller. Among those meetings, according to the New York Times, were with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, and Sergey Gorkov, who is the CEO of Russian financial titan Vnesheconombank.
NBC News reported on Thursday that unidentified sources close to the investigation named Kushner as the “person of interest” mentioned last week, who is the highest-level Trump administration official to be looped into the probe as of this writing. In addition to investigating possible collusion between the Russian government and the Trump campaign, the FBI is also apparently looking into possible financial crimes, though the suspects’ names have not been disclosed as of this writing.
The meetings in question happened in December of 2016, after Donald Trump had already won the presidential election. Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was present at one of Kushner’s meetings with Ambassador Kislyak, and one of Kushner’s representatives went in his stead for a subsequent meeting.
In addition to Kushner and Flynn, other Trump confidants who are being investigated in the FBI’s Russia probe include former foreign policy advisor Carter Page, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who, like Kushner, failed to disclose meetings with Ambassador Kislyak and other Russian officials on security clearance forms.
Mr. Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about these meetings,” Jamie Gorelick, an attorney for Kushner, told NBC News. “He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry.”
