Rep. Barney Frank and Sarah Palin at the winter Gridiron Club dinner

Below, Todd Palin's cummerbund is modeled after the Alaskan flag.

Palin faces 'death panel' and leaves 'em laughing

GRIDIRON CLUB | She lightheartedly roasts journalists at their annual dinner

WASHINGTON -- "Sometimes you just got to trust your instincts. And when you don't, you end up in places like this," joked former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin at the Gridiron Club winter dinner. She was speaking to an unfamiliar audience Saturday night -- an exclusive gathering of journalists.

"At least now I can put a face to all the newspapers that I do read," Palin continued, spoofing that Katie Couric question to her during the campaign about what she reads.

Palin mocked herself -- and the reporters -- all in the spirit of the evening, which called for heavy doses of self-deprecating humor and gentle barbs: "It's good to be here though, really, in front of this audience of leading journalists and intellectuals, or as I like to call it, a death panel."

Palin shared the bill at the black-tie dinner of the 124-year old club with Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.). She was joined by her husband, Todd Palin, and her parents.

Palin -- a potential 2012 presidential candidate -- is touring the nation promoting her memoir, Going Rogue: An American Life. Frank, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, just published a biography titled Barney Frank: The Story of America's Only Left-Handed, Gay, Jewish Congressman.

At the reception, Palin mingled and posed for pictures. She told me, when I asked, that her purse was made from otter. Todd Palin explained to me his cummerbund was based on the Big Dipper and North Star in the Alaskan flag.

Palin's speech was loaded with zingers -- aimed at her and the journalists. Palin, John McCain's running mate, had some interesting help in crafting her speech, enlisting Eric Schnure, a former speechwriter for former Vice President Al Gore.

Other good Palin lines:

• She almost had another title for her book. "Somebody suggested that I go with How to Look Like a Million Bucks for Only $150,000. Todd liked The Audacity of North Slope. I considered not having a title at all. I said it before, but some of the Beltway Boys just don't get it: that you don't need a title to make an impact." That was a dig at critics who slammed her for quitting as Alaska governor.

• Her book did not have an index, so she made one up: "So under A, we have Alaska, media not understanding, pages 1 through 432. Under B. Biased media; pages 1 though 432. And under C, conservative media, got to see acknowledgments for that."

• After her book came out, a cadre of former McCain staffers trashed Palin. Without using his name, she slammed Steve Schmidt, McCain's bald campaign manager. "Normally the Democrat speaker would deliver a speech after me. But instead, I hear the McCain campaign staff asked if they could use that time for a rebuttal. . . . Suffice it to say, that if ever I need a bald campaign manager, it appears all that I am left with is James Carville."

• On Vice President Biden: "I can't help think of what might have been. I can be the vice president overseeing the signing of bail-out checks and Joe Biden could be on the road selling his new book, Going Rogaine."

• Before Frank spoke, the Gridiron chorus sang a song about Frank to the tune of "We Three Kings." Retorted Frank, "I'm very flattered to be the second Jew to have that tune dedicated to." (2 images)

Palin: impossible to deport all illegal immigrants Palin

When Sen. John McCain announced Sarah Palin as his running mate we wondered aloud about the Alaskan governor's immigration positions.

Now, after the Republican vice presidential nominee's interview this week with Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, the picture is a bit clearer. Palin doesn't favor deporting all illegal immigrants. But she's not for amnesty -- just partial amnesty. Not sure how that would work.

Oh, and her grasp of Spanish is very, very limited.

Here's an excerpt from the interview:

RAMOS: Governor, let me ask you about immigration. How many undocumented immigrants are there in Alaska?

PALIN: I don't know, I don't know. That's a good question.

RAMOS: As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?

PALIN: There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -- there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants -- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that's not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

RAMOS: Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?

PALIN: No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They've got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

RAMOS: To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

PALIN: I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

RAMOS: And the last question would be about politics. You only have two more weeks left...

PALIN: Yes

RAMOS: What is your strategy? How are you planning to win the Latino vote?

PALIN: I will tell you, I wish that there were more hours in the day so that we can get out there and to more of the communities with such the strong Latino vote that is out there and really tell them that we desire to work for them. We are asking them to hire us and let us work for them.

RAMOS: Thank you so much. It would be impossible to ask you to say a few words in Spanish, right?

PALIN: Oh my good-well, I don't want to embarrass myself, but ... but gracias and I do thank you so much for this opportunity. I appreciate it.

Sarah Palin Is Pro Amnesty For Illegal Aliens - Univision Interview By Digger

Sarah Palin finally came out and made her stance on illegal immigration clear. She is pro amnesty for illegal aliens. In an interview to Univision she stated unequivocally that she is for a pathway to citizenship. In the same interview she says she is against amnesty for illegal aliens. Have your cake and eat it to, I think that is called.

Back on the same day that John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential candidate I started investigating Palin's past on illegal immigration. I invited others to send in anything they found. There was nothing on the record. Many did write in and said that Laura Ingraham said that one time she was talking to Palin and she said she was against amnesty. That was the only statement anywhere that could be found.

Now we know that she is against amnesty, all the while she is for it with a "pathway to citizenship".

You see this is what is wrong with these people. They think they can be on both sides of the issue at once and that simply isn't possible. You are either against amnesty or you are not. If you are for a pathway to citizenship for those who have illegally entered our country then you are pro-amnesty as you have virtually absolved them of all of their illegality.

People have bashed me for questioning "the Palin". They wrote in to say that obviously she is against illegal immigration. This was all wishful thinking and like so many other issues that the politicians have avoided, until they take a clear stance don't assume anything (and even then, if they're only saying it look at their record).

Sarah Palin is in lock-step with John McCain when it comes to amnesty for illegal aliens. Her answers are almost indistinguishable from McCain's, Obama's or even the most pro-illegal alien congressman in the house, Luis Gutierrez, for that matter.

Read it and weep.

Univision

Univision: Governor, let me ask you about immigration. How many undocumented immigrants are there in Alaska? Sarah Palin: I don't know, I don't know. That's a good question.

Sickening we can't find a real leader in this country who cares about Americans first.

To: KentTrappedInLiberalSeattle Yup! Anyone still claiming not to understand the Governor's position on illegal immigration, at this point, is either disingenuous; dim-witted; or both! ;)

Brief off-hand comments on a radio show, ones which don't even answer any key questions about her previously-stated position in support of amnesty, aren't in any way a substitute for the kind of serious principled statesmanship that is going to be required if we are to have any hope of saving this republic.

The amnesty debate is going to burn like a political inferno in the next few months. If this is the best she can do she is doomed. People have way to much at stake here to mess around any longer with equivocations of any kind on this crucial question. 60 posted on Friday, December 04, 2009 3:25:35 AM by EternalVigilance (The Supreme Law of the Land: "No person shall be deprived of life without due process of law.") Hugely Pro-Illegal Columnist Ruben Navarrette Endorses Palin By Digger

There's something dirty going on and everyone is ignoring it, except me it seems. That is the stance of Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin on illegal immigration.

Now we get word in this latest column by Ruben Navarette Jr. - a champion of illegal aliens in this country who is fresh off of ranting and raving about how good the child of illegal aliens did in the Olympics - to bring us this piece on how Palin is a good choice for the Republican Party.

The endorsement of someone who has involved himself so much in pushing the illegal alien agenda for so many years and now endorses Palin should send up red flags for anyone who truly cares about this issue.

In the piece he basically reiterates the same thing others have been saying, but I believe there is an ulterior motive for someone who has championed for illegal aliens for so long. His piece is very well written to obscure this fact though and it makes me even question her stance on illegal immigration even more.

Just as an example of the pro-illegal propaganda Navarrette puts out, just have a read of this piece where he gives illegal alien supporters a little advice on how they can win the battle for America.

Oh, there is plenty to criticize in the most recent round of immigration raids, starting with the fact that employers never seem to get punished as severely and as publicly as workers do – at least not by immigration officials. (There is always the hope that other government agencies – such as the U.S. Labor Department or even the Internal Revenue Service – will look at a case and mete out their own brand of justice.) Or the fact that those who are apprehended often are herded like cattle and charged with heavy crimes such as identity theft. Or the fact that, lacking access to counsel, many plead guilty in proceedings they don't even understand, and end up in prison rather than simply being deported as they typically have been.

"The fact" that illegal aliens are herded like cattle? Really?

http://blog.vdare.com/archives/2008/10/23/its-official-palin-supports-path-to-citizenship/

It’s Official: Palin Supports “Path To Citizenship”

In my piece on Sarah Palin’s immigration policy I made the points that she hasn’t thought and/or doesn’t care that much about the issue; and if she happens to have good instincts, they aren’t going to come out as McCain’s running mate or vice president.

Both of these assertions came to fruition in a recent interview with Univision. When asked how many “undocmented immigrants” were in her state, she replied “I don’t know, I don’t know. That’s a good question.”

As for amnesty, she says she’s against it; but qualifies that she’s only against “total amnesty.” One thing she is against without qualifications is deportations,

There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that’s not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

So what’s her alternative between “total amnesty” and deportations. If you guessed, “attrition through enforcement,” you’re wrong. Instead when she is asked “so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?” She responded,

I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

In my article, I got a bit of grief about calling Palin “a pig in a poke—despite the lipstick.” Well, the gender sensitive conservatives can be happy to know that there is no pig in the poke. Her amnesty cat is out of the bag.

http://blog.vdare.com/archives/2008/09/16/mccain-on-univision-he-will-work-for-amnesty-starting-the-first-day/

McCain on Univision: He Will Work for Amnesty Starting “The First Day”

John McCain was interviewed on Sept. 15 by the Hispanic broadcaster Jorge Ramos, and the Senator let a few cats out of the bag, like his intention of engineering a massive amnesty beginning on the first day of his Presidency. Apparently the idea that he “got” voter objections for rewarding lawbreaking foreigners doesn’t translate well into Spanish.

The dialogue below is from page three of the Univision transcript, which begins here, Alone with John McCain.

Senator, the last time we talk, you told us that it would take a year or two to secure the border, and then you said we can address the other part of it. Would that include massive legalization for millions of undocumented immigrants in this country?

I think it means that we go through a step by step process of allowing people to apply and achieve citizenship in this country, of course. But, I want to point out again; it’s a little more complicated.

It goes against the platform of your party, by the way, because they are against the legalization of millions of undocumented immigrants.

My position is very clear, and that was part of our proposal, that I took up twice. By the way, Senator Obama tried to kill it, because he proposed an amendment that would have done away with any temporary worker program. So, there is a huge difference there. So, what we need to do is take the two million according to (Michael) Chertoff, that have broken laws in our country, and deport or imprison them. They are law breakers. Other people who have come here and have been here for a period of time and are law abiding citizens and are willing to go through a certain process, of course, there are not twelve million pairs of handcuffs in America.

So, we can together, republicans and democrats, work out this issue, provide a path to citizenship, on the principle that they do not take any priority over anyone who came to this country legally, or waited legally. And, of course they should pay a fine, because they acted illegally. But, our heritage, the heritage of this country, is people who have come to this country for a better life, and as I said at the Convention, these are God’s children and it will be done in a humane and compassionate fashion.

Senator Barack Obama told us in an interview that he would present a comprehensive immigration reform to congress during the first year. Could you match that?

Sure, I would do it in the first day, but I was the one who led, I was the one who led with Senator (Ted) Kennedy, a great political risk to myself. Senator Obama tried to kill it, because he was doing what the unions wanted. The unions in America do not want a temporary worker program, so Senator Obama came to the floor and had an amendment that would have basically killed immigration reform, because it was a fragile coalition between republicans and democrats. So, don’t let Senator Obama get away with saying that he supports comprehensive reform, when he tried to kill it.

As long as she and The People relate to each other, and the Elites hate her, why not support her instead of one more Bubba?

I'm not supporting another Bubba, period. If that's my only choice,I won't vote or will do another write-in vote.

"You and the others are seriously pissed because she is getting the attention Paul could never manage to get."

Saving America is not a Junior HS prom queen contest.

Ok,so you hate her because she is an attractive woman.

Take your beauty queen and shove it. She and the rest of you Bushbot traitors and no different that Obama. Trashing loyal Americans to whoreship for a party over principles.

You have serious problems with attractive women, don't you? You can't make a post about Palin without writing "beauty queen" in it somewhere. Here is a hint for you. Being attractive and female no more disqualifies a candidate for president than being unattractive and male does qualifify a candidate.

Maybe you would prefer Lady Lindsey Graham as a candidate?

Palin expands her position on Illegal Immigration

Are you really so child-like (retarded) that you think a VP candidate even HAS a position on anything? Their job is to parrot the positions of the presidential candidate.

Yes, no substance to her beliefs. She is disqualifies because she supports everyone but Americans.

Playing the bigot card is beneath you.

Since the VP would be President if case of...Yes, we should know all her positions.

Yeah,I think it is. You just use her VP stands as an excuse. There is no way you can possibly be stupid enough to think or expect a VP candidate to state ANY positions in public that disagree with those of the top of the ticket.

The fact that you can't write her name without adding the words "beauty queen" is the dead giveaway.

Yes, no substance to her beliefs.

You have no freaking idea what her beliefs are on this issue. All you know is what she said while following the script as a VP candidate.

On top of that, her being the Governor of Alaska at the time and having lived in Alaska her whole life made her the only governor with no illegal alien problem. I can guarantee you that there are no illegals camped out in gullies in Alaska or hanging around outside building supply stores waiting to pick up tax free jobs.

Now that she has traveled around the rest of the states during the campaign trip and now the book tour,I suspect she has a MUCH better understanding of the issue than she had before. Not that either one of us know for sure because as far as I know, she hasn't said one word about it either way since the campaign ended.

If it were JUST about illegal aliens and not her appearance and gender, you would be willing to wait until she stood on her own feet and made her own statements on illegal aliens before you started jumping down her throat.

Who knows, once she does I may join you in slamming her? Being pro-amnesty is a deal-breaker for me,too. I'm just willing to wait until I see and hear her say she is pro-amnesty now that she is on her own before I pass judgment. Until that time, she remains the sole acceptable potential candidate for 2012.

Univision: Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?

Sarah Palin: No, I do not. I do not.

What is it about NO that you do not understand, muttering moron?

bears repeating ....

"mumbling MORON is not what he pretends to be.

"He" is a total fraud, whose entire purpose is to tarnish all of us opponents of the current invasion of illegal aliens.

He is nothing but a liar and a fraud, who is working FOR illegal aliens and their supporters."

Umm, okay...

The VP as we all know would become President in case of the Presidents incapacitation. Therefore the VP's stand on issues is important. Of course, since McCain is already a corpse....
