Title: Microsoft issues ‘highly unusual’ Windows XP patch to prevent massive ransomware attack

UK hospitals, Telefonica, FedEx, and other businesses were hit by a massive ransomware attack on Friday. Around 75,000 computers in 99 countries were affected by malware known as WannaCry, which encrypts a computer and demands a $300 ransom before unlocking it. The malware was able to spread thanks to flaws in old versions of Windows that were originally used by the NSA to hack into PCs before being made public by the Shadow Brokers group last month.

While Microsoft quickly issued fixes for the latest versions of Windows last month, this left Windows XP unprotected. Many of the machines attacked today have been breached simply because the latest Windows updates have not been applied quickly enough, but there are still organizations that continue to run Windows XP despite the risks. Microsoft is now taking what it describes as a “highly unusual” step to provide public patches for Windows operating systems that are in custom support only. This includes specific fixes for Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003. "Microsoft says it was painful to witness the attacks"

Microsoft usually charges businesses to provide custom support agreements for older versions of Windows, which include critical and important software updates from Microsoft beyond the normal end of extended support point. “Seeing businesses and individuals affected by cyberattacks, such as the ones reported today, was painful,” explains Phillip Misner, a security group manager at Microsoft. “Given the potential impact to customers and their businesses, we made the decision to make the Security Update for platforms in custom support only.”

It’s an unusual move for Microsoft, but this security flaw and the way it was discovered and made public is equally unusual. There are now signs that the ransomware attack has subsided thanks to a kill switch, discovered by a 22-year-old in the UK. Some experts believe the attackers behind the ransomware have only raised around $20,000 from the scam. Either way, this is yet another painful security lesson for everyone involved. Exploits should be disclosed by government agencies, systems should be patched in a timely manner, and nobody should be running an old supported version of Windows.

Im think Microsoft might be feeling a little vulnerable to lawsuits which may still happen due to designing this into the software.

I dread the day I have to move to Window's 10.

I dread the day I have to move to Window's 10.

Switch to Linux. It has a full graphic desktop environment, will do most if not all of what you need done in in Windows, and if there are things it can't do, then you can still run windows on your linux system as though it were a regular application, and inside of that, you have windows to run whatever you can't run in Linux directly.

The days of having to be married to a single operating system are over.

vmware makes software that lets you run windows on your linux machine, and that should allow you to use your accounting software. So you just need one computer that can primarily be a linux system, on which you can simultaneously run windows and any software than requires windows to run. The only thing I know of that might not work is high demanding 3D gaming software, and that might even work too.

The only thing you need is maybe 20 gigs of free disk space and extra RAM is nice too.

A nice thing about that arrangement is you can save your windows installation simply by backing up files in linux. I have an original/new Win 7 installation on disk, and whenever my windows gets corrupted and doesn't work right, I delete it and make a new copy of my brand new Win 7 install, and restart. I have a brand new windows OS in minutes. Think of it as disposible Windows.

It isn't just WinXP they are fixing.

They've also issued patches for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003, both also no longer supported.

I haven't seen anything on Windows Vista or Windows 7 but it makes little sense to fix XP if you don't fix them as well. The WinXP patches are to fix some old corporate and government systems. I expect we'll see Win7 and WinVista patches soon.

I fixed up an XP system years back for a lady who was determined to keep her DOS version of Peachtree accounting software. She loved it (because she knew it and all the keyboard shortcuts so well).

They said that old DOS program wouldn't work either but all I did was set a few environmental variables and make a proper shortcut for it and it worked for the next 7-8 years, no problems. She was overjoyed.

Another thing to consider is using virtual machines. You can always set up virtual machines to run the required operating system, no matter if the main computer OS is Windows 10 or Linux or even MacOS. I run a number of virtual machines on my Mac i7, different flavors of Linux, WinXP, Win7. It all just works. And I can share files and copy/paste between the various system clipboards. So it is pretty transparent and doesn't require extraordinary software skills. With VMware, you can also download a program they offer for free that will run on your current machine and suck the entire thing into a VMware image file and every last bit of behavior and software in the original machine works perfectly in the virtual machine as well.
