French centrist Emmanuel Macron sought to cement his frontrunner status Friday on the last day of campaigning for the weekend's election run-off after a bruising and divisive race.

Pro-European Macron and far-right anti-immigration candidate Marine Le Pen have offered starkly different visions for France during a campaign that has been closely watched in Europe and the rest of the world.

At the end of a battle that has only increased in intensity in the final days, both candidates made final campaign appearances and toured radio and TV stations.

Macron was visiting the southwest city of Rodez while Le Pen headed for Reims in northern France as they sought to win over voters before Sunday's run-off.

Polls showed that 39-year-old former investment banker Macron has stretched his lead over Le Pen to 22 points after he was seen to have emerged the strongest from a bad-tempered TV debate on Wednesday.

Macron said he had already chosen the name of his future prime minister -- but even the person concerned had not been informed.

"Yes, this choice has been made 'in petto'," he told Europe 1 radio, using an Italian expression meaning "in my heart".

Macron said he would only announce his choice after he took over from President Francois Hollande, if he wins.

"I will not announce it before," he said.

Le Pen has said she would appoint eurosceptic ally Nicolas Dupont-Aignan -- who was knocked out in the first round of the presidential election -- as her premier if she wins.

- Eiffel Tower security breach -

In a major security breach, Greenpeace activists partially scaled the Eiffel Tower in Paris to hang a giant anti-Le Pen banner saying "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" and "#resist".

The Paris police department said Friday's protest had exposed "flaws" in the security of the world-renowned monument that needed to be addressed.

It came at the end of a campaign in which Le Pen sees her rise as the consequence of growing right-wing nationalism and a backlash against globalisation reflected in the election of Donald Trump in the United States and Britain's shock vote to leave the European Union.

Le Pen has said she wants to copy Britain's example of holding a referendum on France's EU membership, sending alarm bells ringing in Brussels.

She has sought to soften the image of her National Front party over the past six years -- but without fully banishing doubts about the party's core beliefs.

Le Pen has tried to portray Macron as being soft on Islamic fundamentalism, playing to the concerns of many of her supporters after a string of terror attacks in France that have killed more than 230 people since 2015.

Although polls show her slipping, she told supporters Thursday she would sweep to power.

"France cannot wait five more years to hold its head high," she said in the northern village of Ennemain.

- 'Fake news' -

Macron's campaign team said rumours he has an offshore account in the Bahamas -- which he strongly denies -- were spread on Twitter by accounts close to Kremlin-friendly news sites like Sputnik and RT as well as Trump supporters.

Le Pen repeated the rumours in the TV debate.

Macron's campaign team called it a "textbook case" of "fake news" and has filed a legal complaint and threatened to sue anyone who repeats the claim. Prosecutors are investigating.

Meanwhile, Macron won high-profile backing from former US president Barack Obama, who said in a video posted on the candidate's website that he "appeals to people's hopes and not their fears".

Obama said Macron had "put forward a vision for the important role that France plays in Europe and around the world" and added "Vive la France!"

In the first round of the election on April 23, Macron scored 24 percent with Le Pen second on 21.3 percent.

The election has seen the main left and right-wing forces in French politics sidelined, as candidates from outside the mainstream parties have profited.

Le Pen should be greatly helped by the Obama endorsement of her left-wing opponent.

French centrist Emmanuel Macron

From what I've read, macron is a shoe-in.

He's an empty suit that is bought and paid for by soros, et al.

Just a caucasian Øbama or a metrosexual hildebeest.

It's more than odd that French people would be doing this to their own monuments and being accusatory and threatening toward someone who loves and respects the French nation. Le Pen wants to stop the madness of 'migrants', 'diversity' and the Muslim trashing of the nation.. Her enemies have been behind EU enforcements against the election of an anti-EU candidate.

If the leftist is elected then France will be in free fall. The Muslims and the idiot French youth will have won. Meanwhile, back in our bankrupt country the draining of the swamp will gain momentum.

Liberals are a lot like Slinkys, they're good for nothing but they bring a smile to your face as you shove them down the stairs.

It appears to be a done deal.

Just as Øbama got one hundred percent of the vote in some thirty-seven precincts in two states, the fix is in.

jmho.

Not really. The French are,and always have been proud to look down their noses at anyone that doesn't share their love of Africans. Bathhouse Barry, being half-black and who grew up as a Muslim is someone they can get behind.

No argument there, but I am not sure we Americans any longer have any standing to criticize anyone else for pissing their country and their culture away. It seems to be a race to the bottom for the whole damn western world.

In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

Yup,France has the same problem as the rest of the formerly civilized world, but they have the biggest problem because they have been flirting with destruction longer than the rest of us.

Their problem is their entire political system is controlled by the votes from the big cities, and the voters in the big cities will ALWAYS vote for "more free stuff". The big cities are where the parasites to to retire early on public benefits.

The rural French that farm and work traditional jobs are as conservative as anyone, but they are too outnumbered and must like white southerners, ignored by the "intellectual elites".

Which is WHY ALL DEMOCRACIES ARE ALWAYS DOOMED TO FAIL.

"The squeaky wheel gets all the grease...",etc,etc,etc

He's just the public face that is allowed to be seen. The real movers and shakers give him his marching orders. They are the people that have owned private family banks for centuries.

I saw a clever outtake from the final debate between Emmanual "Momma's Boy" Macron and Marine Le Pen. (The video does have captions if you hit the 'CC' button.)

The following is the exchange as is seen in the video above:

Le Pen:

“. . . The reality, you went to see Mrs. Merkel, you went to ask for her blessing because you planned to do nothing without her agreement. It’s so true – what are you gonna do opposite Mrs. Merkel? You said I won’t be opposite her, I will be with her . . .”

Macron:

“Of course, I want France to measure up to Germany . . .”

Le Pen:

“Let me tell you what happened – France will be led by a woman, it’ll be either me, or Mrs. Merkel. That’s the truth”.

I don't know how much it changes the race but it is by far the best line I've heard in years in French politics. Obviously, she was ready with that line, waiting to use it.

It's kinda weird really. You have Macron, a 39yo man who was seduced by his 40yo teacher when he was 15yo and he married her a few years later. Now Macron is ~38yo and his wife is ~64yo.

So we have the confused tax-dodging Macron, and these three women in their sixties: Le Pen, Macron's child-molester wife, and Frau Merkel. France hangs in the balance.

Yeeesh... And we thought our choices in 2016 were sucky.

Le Pen put a fine point on the situation with her quip. Not that I really think she'll win. France is just too far gone into Lefty/Muslim mode, probably never to return.

I did NOT think our choices in 2016 were sucky. Ted Cruz wouldda been an awesome POTUS. He just couldn't draw the votes. Then, when Trump vowed 2 DRAIN THE SWAMP, my ears perked up and I knew it it wuz gonna B an interesting 8-year BattleROYale 2 D*throne the PowersThatBe!!

If the French people don't go far right it'll be only a matter of months after sissyman is elected that France will not be able to turn the colossal mistake around.

Most of the European nations have lost their tourist dollars thanks to Merkel's and the EU's open arms policies for Mudslimes. That they will never recover.
