Why do things never seem to change no matter who we send to Washington?  It seems like for decades many of us have been trying to change the direction of this country by engaging in the political process.  But no matter how hard we try, the downward spiral of our nation just continues to accelerate.  Just look at this latest spending deal.  Even though the American people gave the Republicans control of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives, this deal very closely resembles “an Obama administration-era budget”.  It increases spending even though we have already been adding more than a trillion dollars a year to the national debt, it specifically forbids the building of a border wall, it fully funds Planned Parenthood, and there are dozens of other concessions to the Democrats in it.  As I previously warned, these “negotiations” were a political rout of epic proportions.

Perhaps many of us were being highly unrealistic when we expected that Donald Trump could change things.  Because fixing America is going to take a lot more than getting the right number of “red” or “blue” politicians to Washington.  Rather, the truth is that the real problem lies in our hearts, and the corrupt politicians that currently represent us are simply a reflection of who we have become as a nation.

The generations of people that founded this nation and established it as the greatest republic that the world had ever seen had far different values than most Americans do today.

So until there is a dramatic shift in how most of us see the world, it is quite likely that not much in Washington will change.

Throughout the campaign, Donald Trump spoke boldly about “draining the swamp”, but this spending deal very much reflects the swamp’s priorities.  The Washington Post has published a list of eight ways that “Trump got rolled in his first budget negotiation”, and in this case the Post is quite correct…

1. There are explicit restrictions to block the border wall.

2. Non-defense domestic spending will go up, despite the Trump team’s insistence he wouldn’t let that happen.

3. Barack Obama’s cancer moonshot is generously funded.

4. Trump fought to cut the Environmental Protection Agency by a third. The final deal trims its budget by just 1 percent, with no staff cuts.

5. He didn’t defund Planned Parenthood.

6. The president got less than half as much for the military as he said was necessary.

7. Democrats say they forced Republicans to withdraw more than 160 riders.

8. To keep negotiations moving, the White House already agreed last week to continue paying Obamacare subsidies.

In essence, the Democrats got virtually everything that they wanted, and the Republicans got next to nothing.

Trump and the Republicans are promising that they will fight harder “next time”, but we have already heard that empty promise from Republicans year after year going all the way back to 2011.

Among many other conservative pundits, author Daniel Horowitz is absolutely blasting these “weak-kneed Republicans”

Now, with control of all three branches and a president who sold himself in the primaries as the antithesis of weak-kneed Republicans who don’t know the first thing about tough negotiations, we are in the exact same position. Last night, President Trump signaled that, after not even fighting on refugee resettlement and Planned Parenthood, he would cave on the final budget issue – the funding of the border fence. But fear not, he’ll resume his demand … the next time!

This degree of capitulation, with control of all three branches, is impressing even me … and I had low expectations of this president and this party. They have managed to get run over by a parked car. It’s truly breathtaking to contrast the performance of Democrats in the spring of 2009 with what Republicans have done today with all three branches. At this time in 2009, Democrats passed the bailouts, the stimulus, the first round of financial regulations, an equal pay bill, SCHIP expansion, and laid the groundwork for other, bigger proposals, such as cap and trade and Obamacare. Then they got everything they wanted in the March 2009 omnibus bill, and a number of GOP senators voted for it. We, on the other hand, are left with nothing.

And even the mainstream media is admitting that the Democrats made out like bandits in this deal.

Just check out the following quotes

  • “Overall, the compromise resembles more of an Obama administration-era budget than a Trump one,” Bloomberg reports.
  • The Associated Press calls it “a lowest-common-denominator measure that won’t look too much different than the deal that could have been struck on Obama’s watch last year.”
  • Reuters: “While Republicans control the House, Senate and White House, Democrats scored … significant victories in the deal.”
  • The Los Angeles Times describes the agreement as “something of an embarrassment to the White House”: “Trump engineered the fiscal standoff shortly after he was elected, insisting late last year that Congress should fund the government for only a few months so he could put his stamp on federal spending as the new president.”

If Trump can’t get his priorities funded now, do you think that the Democrats will somehow become more agreeable after he has spent a year or two in the White House?

Of course not.

If there ever was going to be a border wall, it was going to happen now.

If Planned Parenthood was ever going to be defunded, it was going to happen now.  From this moment forward, the blood of every child that Planned Parenthood kills will be on the hands of every Republican that voted for this bill or that signed this bill.

The next “big battle” is going to be over a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare, but the truth is that “Trumpcare” is going to end up looking very much like Obamacare.

Instead of repealing it, the Republicans are trying to “fix” Obamacare, and that is kind of like going to the dump and trying to “fix” a big, steaming pile of garbage.

But like I explained earlier, we should not expect things to move in a positive direction in Washington D.C. until the values of those representing us change.

At this point, there are only a few dozen members of the House and a handful of members of the Senate that even give lip service to the values of our founders.

And until our values change, we are not going to send representatives to Washington that share the values of our founders.

Sadly, most Americans know very little about the history of early America.  I would encourage everyone to look into why our founders came to this country in the first place, what they believed was most important in life, and how they viewed the world.

If we ever want to “make America great again”, we need to return to those values.  Otherwise, we are just blowing a lot of hot air.

Trump and the Republicans are promising that they will fight harder “next time”, but we have already heard that empty promise from Republicans year after year going all the way back to 2011.

It gives me no pleasure at all to say it, but I TOLD YOU SO.

The Republicans are shitstains - all of them.

They PRETEND to be pro-life. They PRETEND to be for controlling the border. They PRETEND to be for fiscal responsibility.

BUT THEY ARE NOT.

They SAY those things to get elected, to get power. Then, once IN power, they favor crony capitalist and lobbyist interests, and crony capitalists are morally loose people who do not want abortion restrictions, who want cheap foreign labor, and who are the ones who get the profit from the government contracts.

And this will NEVER CHANGE.

Hillary Clinton was NOT "worse than this". She was THE SAME as this. The Democrats are THE SAME as this. The Republicans are NOT BETTER - not even a little bit better. They are just better LIARS, able to DUPE the rubes on the Right to keep voting for them over and over and over again.

Donald Trump campaigned on giving us, you and me, what WE wanted. But in power - and this time the Republicans have ALL THE POWER - ALL OF IT - the Democrats can't stop them, and if they try (by the filibuster) the Republicans can go nuclear.

There is no excuse. There is no fig leaf to hide behind. There is no more "if only".

I was never YOUR enemy. I was always telling you the truth about the Republicans. You declared yourself MY enemy, and called me a liar and a morally bankrupt person, over and over again, for telling you THE TRUTH.

The TRUTH is now staring you in the face. You can lie to yourself and try to do what kids do when they start to doubt Santa Claus - make excuses for him - but if you're honest with yourself you will admit: "I have been rolled by the GOP. The Republicans have been lying to me all along."

And you might even allow yourself to realize "Vicomte13 said this consistently for years, and I hated him for it. But he was right."

Because I was.

There was never any malice towards you or the other duped rubes who voted for the GOP in what I said during all of these years. I DO have malice, very great malice, for the Republican Party, because they have lied, lied, lied to get our votes.

I do not, and never have, carried the water of the Democrat Party. I don't agree with them either.

The DIFFERENCE is that Democrats tell the truth about what they believe, what they want, and what they are going to do. They are open and up front about it, and they ask voters who agree with them to vote for them.

Republicans are much more immoral, dark and evil because they cannot get elected if they really say what they are going to do, which is hand the country over to crony capitalists. So they rile up conservatives on moral issues that really offend conservatives, get your votes, and then fuck you in the ass EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Lucy always moves the football.

I was hoping, dearly hoping, that Trump was different.

NOPE.

He said he was going to do the opposite of what he just agreed to.

It is a massive betrayal, Republican style.

The Democrats do not betray their base. The Republicans always do.

I told you so.

I've been telling everybody so for a decade. It's WHY I got banned from Free Republic.

There is none so blind as he who refuses to see.

A couple of weeks ago you vilified me again, and I said that I would go down periscope until the budget came out. Then I would come back and post to you saying (sadly) I TOLD YOU SO.

I mean it when I say that it gives me no pleasure at all to do it.

I WANT PLANNED PARENTHOOD DEFUNDED TOO. I WANT THE BORDER WALL.

I voted for that too, just like you. I thought that Trump would fight to the death for those things, at least.

Instead, he turned out to be just another Republican. And Republicans are lying pieces of shit.

Just like I knew all along. Just like I said for a decade.

I told you so, and I was right. Perhaps you realize that now.

Yes, Vic 13, I was afraid of this as well.

So, what should we all do? I guess just STFU, and accept it. Not very appealing.

There will be no STFU.

First of all, we must TURN ON the Republican Party and DESTROY them for being the Quislings that they are.

We must NEVER vote for the Republicans again - never - not even to stop Hillary. We must leave the Republican Party, tear up our memberships, and stop believing that we can EVER take over that party and change it.

With Trump we went out and elected a guy who promised us exactly what he is not delivering now. The Republican Party doesn't want those things that we put him and them up there to do, so they are not going to do them. Look at the number of Republicans resisting. 21. 21 out of hundreds and hundreds.

We are a minority of the party, and we are boobs and bubbas who give THEM power to get what THEY want, while they HAVE the power to also give us what WE voted for, but they won't do it.

So we have to cut them off for good, and not give them the votes for what they want either.

Yes, that WILL mean that Democrats will rule the country for awhile. And that's not a lot of fun. But it's actually no different from what the Republicans are doing, and the Democrats tell you what they're up to. The Republicans lie to your face.

Without our votes, the Republicans can never win another election. They will dry up on the vine as a losing minority. But Democrat rule sucks. If the Republican Party is not a viable alternative, because we shun it and refuse to vote for it, the agony of the people in the Republican Party will increase to the point that they will come vote for an alternative party.

And that's what we have to provide: an alternative party, that has principles.

There are alternative parties, but they are not centrist. There's the Libertarian Party, which is ate up about legalizing drugs. Most of the centrists and Indepedents who vote Republican don't believe in legalizing drugs.

There is the Constitution Party, but they don't believe in things like Social Security and public education, so they're not going anywhere either.

Independents.- the bloc that moved to Trump, largely believe in the social welfare state for education, Social Security and health care - and that's it. They don't like racial politics. They hate illegal immigration and lawlessness, and they want a fair distribution of taxes, not taxes skewed in favor of the rich or the poor.

They're socially conservative and fiscally moderate.

Neither party offers that. A new party has to offer that. It is productive to work together to make that new party. It is completely unproductive to continue to support the GOP. For our beliefs to have a chance of becoming law, the GOP must die.

To kill it, all we need to do is walk away. They have lied to us and abused us too many times. Lucy ALWAYS moves the football. ALWAYS. It will never change. After THIS betrayal, we're not going back, ever, no matter what they do. The wealth crony capitalist elite control that party, and they always will. We have to walk out and form a new party, one that does not give the crony capitalists a perch at the head.

Yeah, good luck with that!

Frankly, I do not think the nation can afford the time that will take.

I think I will send the WH, my Senators & Rep one last letter and email, telling them the big FU, and why.

Besides not voting for ANY Republican again, we ALL should send them letters & emails saying FU. Probably won't change things. But will not cost anything

Say, since you are a Lawyer, and also preacher, you are a very good wordsmith. Perhaps, you could draft a letter for that purpose. We could all use it. Post it here, and I will post it on other forums. It's worth a try.

Our nation is soon to disappear!

I will await your response.

Our nation won't disappear unless the volcano under Yellowstone blows up (and if that happens, we'll have a lot more to worry about than politics).

It will keep on changing, generally in ways we might not like.

I'm not going to attempt to form a new party. I'm merely saying that it has to be done. I'd be willing to help, to join. I supported Ross Perot, and had he been serious, the Reform Party could have been a new party.

As it is, I merely note that the Republican party can never get where I want to go, because it frankly doesn't want to go there. The Democrats either. So I, and a plurality of other Americans, are left without a party. If we were willing to work with each other, we could make a new party and seize the day.

I see no sign we are ready to do that.

Instead, we are very like the Chinese, or the Russians back in the Soviet Union. We might finally have enough and cook off and evan have the temerity to yell at a kommisar from time to time. And - contrary to popular belief - that doesn't result in a quick trip to firing squad. Rather, we get shouted back at and then ignored. We slink back, sullen, aware that things are wrong, as is everybody else, and we all walk along together with that common feeling, but with no willingness to turn to each other and build something. For the Soviet or Chinese, that second step would be dangerous. Being pissed off and saying so won't get you shot in China. Being piseed off, saying so, and trying to organize a political opposition of other pissed off people will get you arrested. That's the thing that's illegal in the Communist land's (not North Korea - there they probably will shoot you for looking funny). Being a grumbking human has to be tolerated, and is, because without the organization, it's literally nothing.

We are blessed in that we CAN organize. But nobody wants to. So we will be ruled by Democrats and Republicans. Or rather, we will be ruled by Democrats, because Republicans are the same in terms of outcomes, but liars to get power.
