United States News Title: Tiger Woods had been drinking before crash, wife told police From The Times December 9, 2009 Jacqui Goddard in Miami Tiger Woods had been drinking before crash, wife told police Tiger Woods was investigated for driving while unfit after his wife told a Florida state trooper that he had been drinking before his car crash last month and had been prescribed addictive drugs. Documents released by the Orange-Osceola state attorneys office in Orlando have revealed that the golfer was suspected by state troopers of being impaired when he took his Cadillac Escalade on a brief but wild ride that ended when he hit a fire hydrant and a tree. Despite being told that Woods, 33, had consumed alcohol earlier in the day and that he had been prescribed the sleeping drug Ambien and the painkiller Vicodin, both of which can compromise the ability to think and react, a request by the Florida Highway Patrol to obtain his blood test results from a hospital was refused by the state attorney. Insufficient information provided to lawfully issue subpoena, the written request was marked on November 30, by Steve Foster, the assistant state attorney. According to TMZ, the celebrity website, hospital sources had said that Woods was admitted to hospital as an overdose case and that doctors had inserted a tube into his trachea to help him to breathe. The Woods saga continued yesterday when his mother-in-law, Barbro Holmberg, collapsed with stomach pains and was taken to Health Central Hospital in nearby Ocoee, days after flying in from Sweden to support her daughter, Elin Nordegren, 29, after allegations of the golfers infidelity. She was discharged 11 hours later and returned to the Woods family home. The hospital is the one where Woods was taken after his crash on November 27, under the alias of William Smith to avoid publicity. Woods has not been seen publicly since his accident. It was unclear whether he had remained at the family home with his wife and their two children Sam, 2, and Charlie, 10 months, since he confessed to unspecified transgressions amid allegations that he had affairs with nine women, including a waitress, a nightclub hostess, a pancake server and a porn star. An unconfirmed report on the celebrity news website RadarOnline claimed that Ms Nordegren had moved out and was living in another property that the couple own on the same estate. Swedish media also reported that, jointly with her sister, Ms Nordegren bought an island home in Stockholm two weeks ago. Woods, whose clean-cut image has helped to build him into a billion-dollar marketing brand, may face questions from his sponsors over the report submitted by Joshua Evans, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, to the state attorneys office after the crash. Suspect: Eldrick Tiger Woods . . . Crime suspected: driving under the influence with property damage, it noted, requesting legal authority to seize Woodss blood test results from the hospital. Next to the question: Why do you reasonably suspect a crime occurred? Trooper Evans noted: A witness [known to be Ms Nordegren] stated that the driver had consumed alcohol earlier in the day . . . the same witness stated that the driver was prescribed medication (Ambien and Vicatin), a misspelling of the painkiller Vicodin. Impairment of the driver is also suspected due to the careless driving that resulted in the traffic crash, the officer added in his report. Vicodin is based on an addictive narcotic that can be used for the relief of moderate to severe pain. But on October 5, Woods wrote on his official weblog that the longstanding knee injury that he had struggled with for much of the year had been healed and that there is no pain. While most sponsors seem to be standing by the golfer, the soft drink brand Gatorade announced last night that it was backing away from its Tiger Woods Focus line of sports drink, which will be discontinued from December 26. It claimed that the move had absolutely no connection to the scandal and that the decision was made months ago. The deal was reported to be worth up to $100 million in royalties over five years. It began with a car accident ...
