Title: She called 911 because someone in her yard was on drugs. Police shot her service dog. (Another Innocent Drug War Victim)

A 2-year-old service dog in training named Crios is dead in Pueblo, Colorado, having been shot several times by police early Friday morning. That much is certain.

But while the Pueblo Police Department maintains that its officer acted appropriately to defend himself from “serious injury,” the dog’s owner is accusing the officer of using excessive force and escalating the situation, according to local media reports.

Leslie Hanson, who told the Colorado Springs Gazette that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, reportedly awoke Friday at around 5 a.m. to noise in her front yard. Thinking someone was trying to break in, she told the Gazette she had the gun she owns in hand.

When she looked outside, however, Hanson said she realized the person making the noise was her neighbor, who appeared to be disoriented and possibly under the influence of narcotics, per KOAA. So Hanson called 911.

When police arrived, Hanson said, Crios, a pit bull, made it through an open gate and approached the responding officers. And that’s where Hanson’s and the police’s accounts diverge. Service dog shot, killed after Pueblo police respond to 911 call KOAA - Pueblo, CO

According to Hanson, the dog merely walked up to the front gate and “might have growled,” according to the Pueblo Chieftain. Hanson contends that police then overreacted, opening fire and shooting Crios seven times, according to ABC 13.

“The police in this situation didn't handle it correctly,” Hanson told ABC 13. “I do have PTSD, and I feel that this is bringing back a lot of trauma. It's needless. You don’t need to hurt an animal seven times.”

Police, on the other hand, said Crios charged at them and continued to do so even as officers moved back.

“Eventually, and in order to protect himself from serious injury, the officer fired several rounds striking the dog,” the department said in a statement on Facebook.

The police defended the officer’s use of force as “unfortunate” but necessary and said all officers are trained for such encounters and are taught that “lethal force is a resort last taken,” the statement read.

Crios was later euthanized because of its wounds. In Hanson’s mind, the incident showcases the sharp difference between her own reaction to the initial disturbance and police’s escalation of matters.

“I had enough sense not to shoot, so I don’t know why the officer didn’t do something different,” Hanson told the Gazette.

Hanson also told the Chieftain that she has been unable to sleep since her dog died.

Police confirmed that the officer who shot the dog had his body camera on at the time of the incident and that they are reviewing the footage, which has not been made public.

These asshole cops never heard of pepper spray or mace?

This reinforces a point I have always made - NEVER dial 9-1-1, you'll end up dead or your dog will be killed.

This is also another example of an innocent victim being killed due to the failed War on Drugs.

I have a simple rule I live by. It may be right and it may be wrong, but that is irrelevant because it is MY rule and I am the one that has to live according to it.

My rule states that if you purposely kill one of my pets,I will kill you using the same method. Everybody that knows me knows this rule,so no one has any excuses if something bad and painful happens to them.

In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

So if you have a pet mouse or gerbil or ferret, you'll kill a man for that?

You're a loon. And if you ever take action on your crackpot views, you'll end up dead or in prison for life.

Those may not be effective on dogs in many situations. Same for tasers.

Furry animals are not easy to tase and may not present their eyes/nose enough to use mace or pepper spray against.

Crios was later euthanized because of its wounds.

She was the owner. She was the one who chose to kill her own dog. Clearly, she was offered a choice.

No wonder she can't sleep now.

And if she called cops in on her neighbor (who was fairly likely to get shot as a result), why didn't she lock up her dog?

She is entirely to blame. She didn't protect her dog by locking it up, she chose to euthanize it.

She is the dog-killer and just wants to blame someone else.

Yup. When you attack any living creature in my house without permission or reason, that is the same thing as attacking me.

You can be the first. I had a couple of earlier contestants, but they seemed to have lost their nerve after I told them what would happen to them if they did.

I know and like my pets, and they depend on me for protection. I don't know or like you. Easy choice to make.

She chose to euthanize her wounded dog after she failed to protect it by locking it up or putting it on a leash or chain, knowing that police were inbound to her property.

She is primarily to blame for her dog's death. And that is why she complains that she can't sleep.

Yep!! Along with power co workers, gas co workers, telephone co workers, catv workers, tree trimmer workers, package delivery workers, lawn maintenance workers, survey workers, water co workers, pizza delivery workers, etc.

Gee, that is a lot of workers that are not as cowardly as some cops.

No, the deal is that a lot of cops are cowards, and just itching to kill something to make themselves feel macho. They know that if they gun down a human, there is a lot of legal complications. So, they just look for a dog to kill, that they can get away with.

One day, karma will pay them a visit.

It most likely started when they were kids and loved to torture animals.

They were bullies in school, and just became even more so when they started wearing a badge.

Pretty good rule Pete.

Years ago, I had some clown come into my yard. Not a cop, just some loon. Told me he was going to kill my dog, that was laying in the yard ( a big lab ). I asked him why. He just gave me a stupid grim and said "because I want to". I pointed a 1911 at his nose & told him that if anything happened to my dog, I would track him down & blow his head off. Friends that knew him told him he was making a HUGE mistake! Never saw him again, & nothing happened to my dog.

I think the PD's need better psycho testing before they hire cops. And I am also amazed at the number of idiots that are so quick to defend the dog killing cops.

Toronto banned new pitbulls around 10 years ago. They've reduced their numbers by 80% supposedly. The pit fanciers keep trying to point out that they haven't had a similar decrease in dog bites.

Apparently some woman was killed by pitbull in Montreal some months back. So they just banned new pitbulls too.

So in a matter of years, we'll have more hard data on the actual impact of pitbull bans on public safety.

No,you dummy,YOU were the one that mentioned pet mice, not me.

I HAVE seen one mouse that was far braver and far more noble than you will ever be,though. My old Calico cat had his mate cornered and injured after he had gotten away, and he ran back out into the open in a closed in area where he knew there was no escape in a effort to distract the cat so his mate could get away, and while it worked,it cost him his life. I rescued his injured mate and let her loose outside, but she was so hurt I doubt she made it. She did manage to make it away from the bottom step when I looked the next morning, though.

I haven't killed a mouse since, and anytime one of my cats catches one,I try to get it away from them and release it outside,in honor of that one mouse's courage.

You obviously don't have the balls of that mouse or you wouldn't be so rabid about killing pets.

Then again, you are a cop, which means you are barely a step above a ghetto rat gangbanger on the evolutionary ladder,so it's probably asking too much for you to do better.

I had a similar experience when I had my gun shop. I had a tom cat kitten that was a stray that wandered up in a thunderstorm one night and begged to come inside until I opened the door and let him in. He was happy to lay up on the counter and purr at people who came in. One this this big punk came in and while talking to me about gun repairs the little tom came in from the back and jumped up on the counter to see/greet whoever came in. The idiot immediately announced "I hate cats. I think I'm going to kill him" and started to that end of the counter. I pointed my combat commander at his forehead and told him to "Go ahead and kill him if you think that is what you absolutely have to do to continue to live with yourself, but the instant you reach out to harm him I am going to blow the whole top of your MF'ing head off. Test me and find out."

For some reason he no longer felt the urge to kill my cat,and I never saw him again.

I am a retired Letter Carrier. I never once needed a weapon to protect myself from customers dogs, and the only time I was bitten was when I escorted a customers senile cocker spaniel back into his back yard after he had gotten out somehow. SOB happily followed me into the back yard, and when I went to leave and close the gate,he bit me on the ankle.

No good deed........

I did use pepper spray on a German Shepard trying to come across a fence at me one day, though. Fogged him down pretty good with the pepper spray, and after that he would run and hide when I walked up to the fence and mailbox instead of trying to attack.

I bet you still believe in Santa too, don't you? I have known numerous people who had pit bulls, and they were all nice, friendly dogs. You can make any dog mean if you abuse it,and you can make any breed of dog gentle if you treat it nice when it's a puppy.

The media, always desperate to create sensation and sell advertising, created the whole "pitt bulls are monster dogs from hell!" mantra by focusing on abused pit Bulls owned by inner city drug dealers that were often beaten and starved to make them mean.

Yeah, I retired from the phone company. Was in & out of a lot of yards. Even climbed poles that customers had chained their dogs to. Never was afraid of them. Just petted them, scratched their ears, & chest, then did my job. No problem.

I still believe most of this " I feared for my life " is a Bullshit excuse to kill something. An excuse by cowards! If they kill a dog, it makes them feel like they are bad ass. And I believe that those that do, will one day get a visit from karma, which they will richly deserve! Then their boot lickers will be all boo hoo hoo.

...an auto-erotic phenomena of instant sexual gratification spontaneously...

I'd say that many cops are the ones who get instant sexual gratification when they kill a dog - or a human for that matter.

‘Do Not Resist’: A chilling look at the normalization of warrior cops

Fittingly, the most chilling scene in the movie doesn’t take place on a city street, or at a protest, or during a drug raid. It takes place in a conference room. It’s from a police training conference with Dave Grossman, one of the most prolific police trainers in the country. Grossman’s classes teach officers to be less hesitant to use lethal force, urge them to be willing to do it more quickly and teach them how to adopt the mentality of a warrior. Jeronimo Yanez, the Minnesota police officer who shot and killed Philando Castille in July, had attended one of Grossman’s classes called “The Bulletproof Warrior” (though that particular class was taught by Grossman’s business partner, Jim Glennon).

In the class recorded for “Do Not Resist,” Grossman at one point tells his students that the sex they have after they kill another human being will be the best sex of their lives.

The room chuckles. But he’s clearly serious. “Both partners are very invested in some very intense sex,” he says. “There’s not a whole lot of perks that come with this job. You find one, relax and enjoy it.”

I have to deal with these dogs all the time. They are bat shit crazy. Attack for no reason. They have good days and bad days. I don't have a problem with dogs just pits. Never ever let them get behind you.

I believe the statics state that 80% of mauling are from some pit mix. They dwarf all other dog breeds combined.

If someone has a pit I demand they put them up so they can not get out or I leave. I will not hesitate to kill a pit if it attacks. I will have no problem putting the owner down along with the dog if he wants me too. Pit owners are just as dumb as the dog. I hate those dogs with a passion not many can understand unless you deal with them like I do.

Its not a media made up thing its a real issue. Pit owners claim their dog is just the nicest dog ever and it would never hurt someone. Freaking bull crap. I think there was a news crew doing a story on pits and owners on how nice the breed is when trained but the owner was attacked and I think killed by their own dog. Karma is a bitch with pit puppies!

That would be nice to see those statics.

I saw the news just a minute ago and another child was mauled by a pit. I would have killed the dog and gone pulp fiction on the owner. If you are going to own one of those dogs you have to pay the price in my book.

Ergo, you are one of those sickos who value animals more than human beings.

Human beings ARE animals, you freaking idiot.

Although many people that wear badges have heads so think they may well be made of stone.

In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

Nor should you. Barking at you or even growling at you when the dog is on one side of the fence and on "his property" while you are on the other side of the fence is NOT an attack, though. It's a warning.

Which is more than you will get from most human animals.

“The police in this situation didn't handle it correctly,” Hanson told ABC 13. “I do have PTSD, and I feel that this is bringing back a lot of trauma. It's needless. You don’t need to hurt an animal seven times.”

PTSD but no mention of being a veteran.

Seems we were just discussing this expansion of "PTSD victims" on another thread.

It's like a club you can join. And get nice drugs, take your pets with you anywhere, have a victim status, etc.

You remind me of a local case in my own town with a pitbull.

The dog tried to attack some delivery guy on this guy's farm or someone who had legit business there. The owner refused to take it seriously when the cops came, blew them off.

A few weeks later, the pitbull killed both of his kids and chewed their faces off.

Some people just won't learn.

I had a close friend who had a really big, really smart German shepherd. He would menace anyone on even the slightest signal from my friend but never attacked anyone. Until one day when my friend's back was turned at a family event and he torn up the face of his niece pretty bad. The dog was put down. The little girl had some extensive plastic surgery.

My friend hasn't owned a dog since. Around here, his name would be mud if he owned another dog after that.

When police arrived, Hanson said, Crios, a pit bull, made it through an open gate and approached the responding officers.

The dog was no long behind the fence at this point when it got shot.

If the dog was in the yard behind a fence next to the officer then there would be no need to shot the dog.

Pits are not dogs. They've been bred over hundreds of years to be killing machines.
