LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The former chairman of the Republican National Committee says that new immigration reform efforts will give his a party a chance to soften its tone on the issue.

Ed Gillespie said Tuesday the GOP should present itself as anti-illegal immigration but not anti-immigrant in the debate. Gillespie said he thinks some of the party's harshest voices were the loudest the last time Congress debated immigration reform.

Gillespie, who also served as counselor to former President George W. Bush, said Republicans need to do a better job of reaching out to minorities. Gillespie spoke at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service.

Former.

Dr Paul is current in his position of being against the fence and all efforts to round the illegals ups.

Paul says to stop illegals, we must stop states from giving aid.

While at the same time saying he is for States Rights.

Completely congruent. Don't give the states money (was never intended for anything anyway), but allow the states to determine how best they will handle the illegal immigrants in their states.

However, as he noted, and is happening at least locally, as the jobs are drying up in construction and other such jobs, I really have seen fewer immigrants over the past 6 months. Many of them are apparently going home

Stopping an invasion is one of the few Constitutionally granted powers the feds have. If there was no welfare for the illegals and no jobs they would not be here in the first place.

Agree on the welfare issue. Reason for stopping the funding to the states. However, when the economy is very good (full employment hovering around 4% or less) there will be jobs that need to be filled that others simply won't take because the opportunity cost for them to take a position may be too high (lower paying construction job to keep up with demand if there is a higher paying job available as well because of the good state of the economy)

That's bullshit. Many Americans lost their jobs and business to the illegal invasion.

Either pay the right salary to hire Americans or find another business. We got along just fine before the invasion.

Ah I see. Screw what the market will bear, pay what 'Muricans think they deserve....and people wonder why manufacturers are moving off shore.

We got along just fine before the invasion

Now just which 'invasion' would that be? The Italian invasion of the early 20th? Or perhaps the Irish invasion of the 19th century? Granted by allowing multi-lingual programming, it is taking longer than in the past for assimilation of all immigrants into the American culture but this nation has faced 'invasions' by large groups of immigrants in the past. Course they were legal but some of the same issues occurred.

Either pay the right salary to hire Americans or find another business

I'm not for illegal immigration in any fashion. But quite simply if a manufacturer of a house determines to make a profit that he is comfortable with he must pay $x/hour and no one wants that job, what is he supposed to do? Take one 'for the team', make less profit (meaning less investable dollars for future projects), and pay $x+y/hour? Push up the price of the house to offset this increase thereby pushing the price of real estate up again and price homes out of the reach of the average person? That's great, we'll have a whole new glut of real estate on the market. But boy howdy the workers will be getting the 'right salary'...well that is until the construction company goes out of business because they're losing money...

Multinational Companies went off shore when we enacted Free trade agreements like NAFTA, WTO, GATT, and agreements with China. Obama is just about to sign another agreement with South Korea, moving what manufacturing we have left offshore. If it were up to you, workers would have no rights, we would have child labor, no wage laws and hour laws. The fact is GM profits were at record highs in the 1960s when we had high tariffs and the majority of American workers were unionized.

Italians and Irish were White Europeans. They wanted to learn English, embrace our political cultural and contribute to the system. These immigrants make us embrace their language, culture, and learn about their history. Not to mention many fo them think the American southwest belongs to a nation of Atlan and that we stole California and Texas from Mexico. Not to mention they are mostly far left. They vote far left politically and drain the welfare systems. They also didn't come into a country that now faces double digit unemployment or even high double digit unemployment. They came to an open and less populated country where labor was needed to build up the conomy and grow the nation.

Yes, the owner is supposed to follow the laws and hire Americans, not illegal foreigners. Tough luck if a couple dollars is taken off his salary. the fact is, if CEOs cared more about their country and workers instead of personal salary, real wages wouldn't have decreased since 1973, we wouldn't have a 400 billion dollar trade deficit, and 50 trillion dollars of public and private debt.
