The Turnip Prize for bad art is presented by the New Inn in Wedmore and timed to coincide with the slightly better-known Turner Prize award. The winning work, cheekily entitled Manhole Cover, was proudly displayed above the bar. Landlord Trevor Prideaux presented the "artist" - who called herself Frank Van Bough - with a turnip. In a ceremony broadcast live on BBC Points West, Frank said she was "completely underwhelmed" at winning the prize. Little effort required Co-organiser James Timms said the contest had reached "new standards of low". The spoof award - which is voted for by Wedmore residents - was first given in 1999. Entrants can be disqualified for putting too much effort into their artistic offerings. This year's runners ups included a fence panel entitled Don't Take A Fence and a bunch of naked Barbie dolls in an old birdcage. That work was entitled Knickerless Cage.
